GULF OF TOKYO AND ITS ENVIRONS.

Notice is hereby given that Fort No. 2 Saff light, on the fort, Gulf of Tokyo, which was discontinued for reconstruction in October, 1917, will be shown as formerly on the 31st of March, 1918.

Notice is hereby given that the character, the candle-power, and the visibility of the light of Joga Shima, on Joga Shima, Province of Sagami, will be changed as follows on the 1st of April, 1918.

Joga Shima Lighthouse.

Character.—Sixth-order, acetylene gas flashing white, showing one flash every 20 seconds.

Power.—5,000 candles.

Visible Distance.—15 nautical miles in clear night.

P.S.—After the practical measurement, the height of light above the water is calculated as 85·9 shaku.


Notice to Mariners.—No. 39 of 1918.

SHIPMENT OF CHARGED ELECTRIC CELL BATTERIES.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 25th June, 1918.

IT has been brought under the notice of this Department that a package of charged electric cell batteries was recently shipped at an oversea port and brought to New Zealand.

Such charged batteries are very dangerous, as they are liable to start fires in a ship’s hold. Shipmasters are therefore cautioned against accepting them for shipment on their vessels.

Soldiers’ Property Boards of Trustees appointed.

National Efficiency Board,
Wellington, 18th June, 1918.

IT is hereby notified that, in pursuance of the regulations relating to the management of soldiers’ properties made on the 2nd April, 1917, under the War Regulations Act, 1914, and its amendments, the Minister of Defence has constituted and appointed the following Soldiers’ Property Boards of Trustees, namely:—

THE JAMES CAIN SOLDIERS’ PROPERTY BOARD OF TRUSTEES.—Consisting of George Elliot, of Auckland, Commissioner of the National Efficiency Board for the Auckland Military District; Arthur William Gillies, Expert Adviser to the Auckland Commissioner of the National Efficiency Board; Mostyn Jones, of Te Kuiti, Merchant; James Boddie, of Te Kuiti, Farmer; George E. Jackson, of Piopio, Farmer; and John Budge, of Kiokio, Farmer.

THE FELIX BAKER SOLDIERS’ PROPERTY BOARD OF TRUSTEES.—Consisting of George Elliot, of Auckland, Commissioner of the National Efficiency Board for the Auckland Military District; Arthur William Gillies, Expert Adviser to the Auckland Commissioner of the National Efficiency Board; Morton Gorrie, of Coromandel, Farmer; James Jackman, of Whitianga, Farmer; Charles Geard, of Port Charles, Farmer; and George Darling, of Coromandel, Farmer.

It is hereby notified for public information that the Theobald Meagher Soldiers’ Property Board of Trustees, appointed on the 18th October, 1917, pursuant to the above regulations, has been dissolved by authority of the Minister of Defence.

CROWN LANDS NOTICES.

Land in the Otago Land District for Sale or Lease to Discharged Soldiers.

District Lands and Survey Office,
Dunedin, 24th June, 1918.

NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned lands are open for sale or lease under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act, 1915, and the regulations thereunder; and applications will be received at the District Lands and Survey Office, Dunedin, up to 4 o’clock p.m. on Tuesday, the 13th August, 1918.

The lands may be selected for cash or on deferred payments, or selected on lease for thirty-three years, with right of renewal for further successive terms of thirty-three years and a right to acquire the freehold.

Applicants must appear personally before the Land Board for examination at the District Lands and Survey Office, Dunedin, on Wednesday, 14th August, 1918, at 10 o’clock a.m.

The ballot will be held at the conclusion of the examination of applicants.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

These sections, which are subdivisions of the well-known Gladbrook Estate at Strath Taieri, are situated from a mile to four miles and a half from the Township of Middlemarch. Middlemarch is an important station on the Otago Central Railway line, and is about forty-eight miles from Dunedin. There is a dairy factory close to the township. The sections comprise level land of very fine quality, capable of producing any kind of grain or root crop, and are very suitable for dairy-farming. The soil is a rich black loam on a clay formation, and the elevation is from 700 ft. to 730 ft. above
