GISBORNE INNER HARBOUR.—ERECTI0N OF GROYNE AND LIGHT.

THE Gisborne Harbour Board have notified that a groyne has been erected in the basin of the inner harbour running out from wharf on east side of Tauranganui River towards and abreast the railway goods-shed on west side of river.

A white light will be shown from sunset to sunrise from the end of this groyne from this date until further notice.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Department of Navigation, N.S.W., and the Governor-General of Formosa, are published for general information.

NEW SOUTH WALES.

PORT OF NEWCASTLE.—ALTERATION IN FAIRWAY LEADING-MARKS FOR NEWCASTLE HARBOUR.

Notice is hereby given that on the 1st June, 1918, the use of the present fairway leading-marks at the Port of New-
castle will be discontinued, and new leading-marks of the following description will be brought into use in their stead :—

Front Tower.—Structure: Steel lattice-work tower, painted white. Position: Immediately at the back of Market Wharf. Character of light: Fixed red electric light. Height of light above mean sea-level: 107½ ft.

Back Tower.—Structure: Steel lattice-work tower, painted red. Position: West end of Church Street. Character of light: Fixed white electric light. Height of light above mean sea-level: 167 ft.

In order to make these lattice-work towers as conspicuous as possible for daylight marks, an area of 30 ft. vertically by 7 ft. horizontally (at upper end) will show a solid white surface.

These fairway leading-marks are placed 1,042 ft. apart, and when in line bear south 47° west, correct magnetic, and indicate practically a centre-line through the entrance of Newcastle Harbour.

JAPAN.

FORMOSA.—TAKOW LIGHTHOUSE.

Notice is hereby given that on and after the night of the 10th March next the existing light at Takow Lighthouse will be discontinued, and in lieu thereof a new light will be shown as follows :—

Position.—The same position as hitherto. (Lat. 22° 36′ 31″ N., long. 120° 16′ 5″ E.)

Construction and Painting.—Octagonal brick tower, painted white.

Height of Light from the Base.—36 ft.

Height of Light above the Water.—191 ft.

Order and Character of Light.—3rd-order electric alternating light, showing alternately red and white of 10 seconds each.

Illuminated Arc.—For an arc of 198 degrees of horizon from N. 39° W., through N. and E., to S. 21° E. The bearings are magnetic and from seaward.

Candle-power.—White ray, 94,000; red ray, 37,000.

Distance visible.—20½ nautical miles.
