VALPARAISO.—RADIO TIME-SIGNAL ESTABLISHED.

In accordance with international custom the Office of
Hydrography and Navigation, beginning with 1st January,
1918, is transmitting the time by means of radio telegraphy,
daily except Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

The signals begin exactly at 12 h. 55 m. of Greenwich
mean time and terminate at 13 h. 00 m. 00 s. of the Green-
wich meridian. During this interval each tick or beat of
the master chronometer of the office is transmitted by the
radio wave, except the twenty-ninth second of each minute
and the ten last seconds of each one of the five minutes,
the termination of the five minutes, which is 13 h. exactly
of Greenwich time, being marked by a long contact to
indicate the end of the signal.

The two light-buoys, formerly painted blue, which mark
the line of the telegraph cable in Guanabara Bay, between the

white, with “T” in blue; experience having suggested
this colour in consequence of the aquatic birds. When

The light is exhibited from an iron structure, the focal height
being 34·5 ft. above the ground and 238·7 ft. above mean
