Minister’s Decisions under Customs Duties Act.

Customs Department, Wellington, 22nd May, 1918.

IT is hereby notified for public information that the Hon. the Minister of Customs has decided to interpret the Customs Duties Act in relation to the undermentioned articles as follows:—

NOTE.—“Not otherwise enumerated” appears as n.o.e.; “other kinds” as o.k.; “articles and materials suited only for, and to be used solely in, the fabrication of goods in the Dominion” as a. & m.s. Articles marked thus † are revised decisions.

General Tariff.
7/107 A. & m.s., viz. :—
Benzol for the manufacture of rubber cement, when denatured by the addition of 10 lb. rubber or gutta-percha to each 100 galls., such rubber or gutta-percha to be brought into solution before delivery from Customs control As a. & m.s. (482) Free.
5/4/3 Hemp hoods, unblocked, for hat-making (shaped similarly to hatmakers’ felt hoods)
14/3/4 Lenses or glasses for the manufacture or repair of motor-car lamps,—viz., “Osgood Autolite Deflectors,” “Osgood Long-distance Lenses,” and ruby glasses or lenses
13/17/9 Soundboards for the manufacture of pianos
8/34/3 Blanket, printers’—viz., “Automatic Repressed Felt Blanket,” enamelled on one side, for use with lithographic rotary printing-machine As printing materials n.o.e. (412) Free
7/102 Bone char or bone black, for filtering (claimed as n.o.e., but not distinguishable from drop black used by painters) As paints n.o.e. (437) Free
9/20 Boots—viz., gum-boots, half-knee, knee, or thigh; to include only such boots as measure not less than 9½ in. (whether men’s, women’s, youths’, or girls’) from the lowest point reached by the line of the top of the upper to a horizontal surface upon which the boot has been placed.
20/98 Cord for making dress-guards for women’s bicycles (claimed as parts of bicycles) As cordage n.o.e. (239) 20 per cent.
12/19/2 Dental appliances, viz. :—
Mirrors, dental, heads and handles for, whether imported attached, or otherwise, when the Collector is satisfied that they are reasonably identifiable as dental mirrors or parts thereof As dental appliances (279) Free.
10/98 Fruit—viz., fig pulp, being dried figs minced As fruit pulp (12) 1½d. per lb.
10/44/2 Fruit—viz., passion-fruit juice and pips, with syrup added As fruits preserved in syrup (30) 25 per cent.
11/32/24 Motor vehicles, accessories for, viz. :—
Tube bags of leather cloth, not being identifiable as peculiar to motor vehicles As leather cloth bags n.o.e. (99) 20 per cent. 10 per cent.
3/153 Auto ambulance trucks, including the “Weaver Auto Ambulance” As manufactured articles of metal n.o.e. (183) 20 per cent.
13/62 Pencils—viz., spotting pencils with chalk cores for photographers’ use As artists’ colours (328) Free
†6/18/3 Pictures in book form—viz., “The Nation’s Pictures,” “Modern Art,” “Allies in Art,” “Belgian Art in Exile” As printed books n.o.e. (355) Free.
16/50 Scientific apparatus, viz. :—
Wireless electric pipe locator and finder As scientific apparatus (280) Free.

Correction.—Minister’s Order dated 12th March, 1918, should be numbered D. 32 (instead of D. 31).
