II. Bermuda Islands.

Mariners are hereby warned that it may be necessary to extinguish certain lights, and to discontinue or remove any aids to navigation on the coasts of the Bermuda Islands and outlying reefs without further notice.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

MAUI ISLAND.—KIPAHULU.—LIGHT TO BE ESTABLISHED.

About 1st May, 1917, a flashing white light every 5 seconds —thus, flash 1 second, eclipsed 4 seconds—of 170 candle-power, will be established at Kipahulu.

The light will be exhibited 178 ft. above the water and 16 ft. above the ground from a white skeleton tower with enclosed base.

The light will be obscured from 66° to 248°.

Approx. position: Lat. 20° 39′ 17″ N., long. 156° 3′ 25″ W.

GULF OF ADEN, PERSIAN GULF, ARABIAN SEA, BAY OF BENGAL, AND MALACCA STRAIT.

CAUTION WITH REGARD TO EXTINGUCTION OF LIGHTS.

1. The lights at the following places have been extinguished:—

Aden, Jibuti and vicinity (except Ras al Bir), Cape Monze, Karachi, Bombay and vicinity, Colombo, Barberyn, Madras, Calcutta and Hugli River approaches, Rangoon River approaches, Penang, Singapore.

2. All lights in the Persian Gulf, and on the coasts of India, Ceylon, and the Bay of Bengal are liable to be extinguished without notice. Vessels should arrange to arrive at their destinations during daylight hours.

SUMATRA.

NORTH COAST.—MALACCA PASSAGE, PULO WEH.—BERDURI ROCK.—AMENDED POSITION.

Position.—At a distance of about one mile north-eastward from the position shown on the charts. Lat. 5° 45′ 30″ N., long. 95° 21′ 45″ E.

Description.—A rock which dries 5 ft.

Remarks.—The rock is to be moved on the charts to the amended position given above, and the 3-fathom rock close eastward of it expunged.

CEYLON.

WEST COAST.

The wrecks of two steamers are in the following positions:—

(a.) In 22 fathoms: Latitude, 6° 58¾′ N.; longitude, 79° 41¼′ E. A portion of about 10 ft. of a derrick is visible above the sea.

(b.) In 32 fathoms: Latitude, 6° 47½′ N., longitude, 79° 45′ E.

JAPAN.

SHIMONOSEKI KAIKYO.—MANAITA IWA.—ALTERATION IN COLOUR OF LIGHT.

Position.—Lat. 33° 54¾′ N., long. 130° 53¾′ E.

New abridged description.—(U.) lt. F. gn., 19 ft., vis. 6 m.

Alteration.—The colour of this fixed light has been altered from white to green.

SHIMONOSEKI KAIKYO.—LIGHT-BUOY WITHDRAWN.

Position.—At a distance of about 2 cables, north-eastward, from Koshiki Se. Lat. 33° 56½′ N., long. 130° 55¾′ E.

Description.—A black conical light-buoy exhibiting a fixed green light.

Remarks.—The light-buoy is to be expunged from the charts.

WEST COAST.—SHIMONOSEKI STRAIT.—GOMIYOSE SU.—LIGHT-BUOY ESTABLISHED.

A light-buoy consisting of a black truncated cone surmounted by a latticework superstructure supporting a lantern, 10 ft. above the water, and exhibiting an occulting green light every 8 seconds—thus, light 4 seconds, eclipsed 4 seconds—visible 4 miles, has been moored on the south-western side of Gomiyose Su, in 5 fathoms of water, on the bearings—

The stone post of Maiko Jima .. 350° 30′
Approx. position: Lat. 33° 55′ 57″ N., long. 130° 53′ 27″ E.

CHINA.

EAST COAST.—SADDLE GROUP.—NORTH SADDLE ISLAND LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.

Position.—Lat. 30° 51¾′ N., long. 122° 40¼′ E.

New abridged description.—Lt. fl. ev. 15 secs., 273 ft., vis. 23 m.

Details.—The revolving white light has been replaced by a flashing white light every fifteen seconds.

Remarks.—The light has a power of 500,000 candles.

Note.—The temporary light exhibited from the gallery of the light-tower has been discontinued.

AFRICA.

EAST COAST AND INDIAN OCEAN ISLANDS.

(1.) Africa, East Coast.—Caution with regard to Extinction of Lights.

1. All lights between Mombasa and Cape Delgado, inclusive, are extinguished.

2. All other lights on the East Coast of Africa, with the exception of Cape Inhaca light, are either extinguished or cannot be depended upon.

3. No vessel is permitted to enter or leave Delagoa Bay at night.

(2.) Indian Ocean Islands.—Caution with regard to Extinction of certain Lights.

I. Madagascar.

All lights at Diego Suarez are extinguished.

Special Directions for entering Diego Suarez.—Vessels bound for Diego Suarez, in order to avoid delay, are advised to notify the time of their arrival in advance to the Military Commander three hours before arrival by day and five hours before arrival by night. The signal denoting “Passage free” authorizes vessels to enter the channel, but they will still be under the obligation to stop when directed to do so from the semaphore, to allow the examination service vessel to proceed alongside.

II. Réunion.

All lights in the Island of Réunion are extinguished.

III. Mauritius.

All lights in the Island of Mauritius are extinguished.

AUSTRALIA.

NEW SOUTH WALES.—PORT OF BROKEN BAY.—CAUTION.

Masters and others are hereby warned that for a period of three months, commencing on or about the 11th day of May, 1917, an unattended light-vessel, exhibiting a white group flashing light (dimmed), showing three (3) flashes in quick succession every fifteen (15) seconds, visible from seaward, will—for testing purposes—be moored in six fathoms, near the entrance of Brisbane Water, true north of Elliott Island, Broken Bay.

Boats will not be allowed alongside, nor will any person be allowed on board of such vessel.

Trespassers will render themselves liable to prosecution.

Vessels should not anchor in the vicinity.

NORTH-WEST COAST.—JARMAN ISLAND LIGHT.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTERISTICS.—SIGNAL-STATION DISCONTINUED.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the fixed white light on Jarman Island will be altered to flashing white light; and, further, that the signal-station will be discontinued on or about 1st August, 1917.

Position.—Lat. 20° 39′ S., long. 117° 13′ E.

Details.—The fixed white light will be replaced by a new light having the undermentioned characteristics:—

Character.—Single flashing white light, showing one flash every three seconds—thus, flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 2⅔ secs.

Power.—3,000 candles.

Note.—The light will be unwatched, and the signal-station discontinued.

Remarks.—The other details of the light will remain unchanged. No further notice will be given.
