Notice to Mariners.—No. 44 of 1917.

WAIROA ROADSTEAD.—HAWKE’S BAY.

A RECENT survey having been made of the Wairoa Roadstead, Hawke’s Bay, the accompanying reproduction of the plan showing the soundings in feet at L.W.O.S.T. is herewith given.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 47 of 1917.

HIKUTU ROCK.—TOKOMARU BAY.

THE Tokomaru Harbour Board notify that the black cone buoy marking Hikutu Rock (Tokomaru Bay) has been replaced by a black can buoy. Bearings from buoy, Maratiri 308° (N. 67° W. magnetic), distant 2·1 miles; Hikutu Rock 215° (S. 20° W. magnetic).

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Department of Trade and Customs, Melbourne; the Department of Navigation, New South Wales; the Harbour and Light Department, Albany; the Governor, Balboa Heights; the Hydrographic Office, Washington; and the Hydrographic Office, London, are published for general information.

ENGLAND.

WEST COAST.—BRISTOL CHANNEL.—PROHIBITED ANCHORAGE.

Position.—Breaksea Light-vessel, lat. 51° 20′ N., long. 3° 17½′ W.

Details.—Mariners are hereby warned that vessels are prohibited from anchoring within an area bounded as follows:—

Limits.

(1.) On the North.—By a line drawn from Breaksea Light-vessel in a 270° (N. 73° W. mag.) direction.

(2.) On the South.—By the parallel of lat. 51° 16′ N.

(3.) On the East.—By a line drawn from Breaksea Light-vessel in a 180° (S. 17° W. mag.) direction.

(4.) On the West.—By the meridian of long. 4° W.

Note.—The above area is to be indicated on the chart.

Variation.—17° W.

UNITED STATES.

PACIFIC COAST.—OREGON AND WASHINGTON.—COLUMBIA RIVER ENTRANCE.—LEADING-LIGHTS DISCONTINUED AND BELL BUOY WITHDRAWN.

  1. Leading-lights discontinued:—

(a.) South Channel leading-lights,—

(i.) Front light :

Position.—At a distance of about 4 cables, north-westward, from the alternating flashing light on Cape Disappointment. Lat. 46° 16¾′ N., long. 124° 3½′ W.

Description.—A fixed white light.

(ii.) Rear light :

Position.—At a distance of about 3 cables, northward, from front light.

Description.—A fixed white light.

(b.) Jetty Sands leading-lights,—

(i.) Front light :

Position.—On Clatsop Spit, near the Columbia River jetty. Lat. 46° 14′ N., long. 124° W.

Description.—A fixed white light.

(ii.) Rear light :

Position.—At a distance of about 3½ cables, south-eastward, from the front light.

Description.—A fixed white light.

  1. Bell-buoy withdrawn:—

Position.—At a distance of about 2 miles, south-westward, from the outer end of Columbia River jetty. Lat. 46° 12½′ N., long. 124° 7¼′ W.

Description.—A bell buoy painted in black and white vertical stripes, known as South Channel bell buoy “S.C.”

Remarks.—The leading-lights and bell buoy mentioned above are to be expunged from the charts.

PACIFIC COAST.—CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO APPROACH.—FARALLON LIGHTHOUSE.—ALTERATION IN FOG-SIGNAL.

Position.—Lat. 37° 42′ N., long. 123° W.

Alteration.—The siren has been replaced by a horn, worked by compressed air, giving three blasts every minute—thus, blast 2 secs., silence 4 secs.; blast 2 secs, silence 1 sec.; blast 2 secs., silence 49 secs.

CENTRAL AMERICA.

PACIFIC COAST.—GULF OF PANAMA.—MORRO PUERCOS.—SHOAL EASTWARD OF.

Position.—At a distance of about 3½ miles eastward from Morro Puercos. Lat. 7° 13′ N., long. 80° 22′ 30″ W., on Chart No. 2267.

Depth.—5 fathoms.

PANAMA CANAL.—TERMINAL PORTS CLOSED AT NIGHT.

On and after 6th April, 1917, the terminal ports of Cristobal and Balboa will be closed between sunset and sunrise. All navigational lights will be extinguished, and it will therefore be necessary for vessels to arrive off these ports by daylight. On account of lights being out and buoys being removed, it will be unsafe for vessels to approach, either by day or night, nearer than two miles from the harbour entrances without canal pilots.

WEST INDIES AND BERMUDA ISLANDS.

CAUTION AS TO CLOSING OF CERTAIN PORTS BY NIGHT AND DISCONTINUANCE OF AIDS TO NAVIGATION.

I. West Indies.

PORTS CLOSED.—Mariners are hereby warned that the following ports are closed between sunset and sunrise, until further notice:—

(a.) Port Kingston (Jamaica).

(b.) Port Castries (St. Lucia).

(c.) St. George Harbour (Grenada).

(d.) Georgetown and New Amsterdam (British Guiana).

LIGHTS EXTINGUISHED.—The lights at the following ports and islands are extinguished:—

(e.) Harbours to Jamaica.
