of the award of the Long-service and Good-conduct Medal to
No. 827, Staff Sergeant-major CHARLES SLATTERY, New
Zealand Permanent Staff.

Amending Rules for the Examination of Masters and Mates.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 17th July, 1917

WHEREAS by Warrant dated the 29th day of July,
1910, and published in the New Zealand Gazette
No. 74, of the 2nd day of the following month, rules were
made governing the examination of candidates for certifi-
cates of competency as masters and mates:
And whereas by Warrant dated the 4th day of May, 1914,
and published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 47, of the 7th
day of the same month, rules were made amending the said
rules of the 29th day of July, 1910:
And whereas by Warrant dated the 22nd day of Septem-
ber, 1915, and published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 113,
of the 30th day of the same month, rules were made further
amending the said rules of the 29th day of July, 1910:
And whereas it is desired to further amend the said rules:
Now, therefore, in pursuance of the power and authority
conferred upon me by section 23 of the Shipping and Seamen
Act, 1908, I do hereby make the following rules amending
the hereinbefore-recited rules; and I do hereby order that
they shall come into force on the 1st day of September, 1917.

RULES.

SIGNALLING.

  1. EVERY candidate for a foreign-going or a home-trade
    certificate of competency must attain a minimum speed of
    eight words a minute in semaphore and five words a minute
    in Morse flashing and flag-waving.

CHART-WORK.

  1. Every candidate for a foreign-going or home-trade
    certificate of competency must work satisfactorily all the
    chart problems indicated in Appendix G of the Regulations
    for the Examination of Masters and Mates.

DEFINITIONS.

  1. In place of the paper on Definitions (Appendix C) here-
    tofore required, candidates will be required to give a figure
    and explanation for each problem worked.
