Pursuant to subsection (4) of the said section, nothing in this notice shall permit any shop to remain open after the hour of 1 p.m. on the day observed as the weekly half-holiday.

Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Watchmakers and Jewellers’ Shops in the Borough of Wanganui, under the Shops and Offices Act.


WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the watchmakers and jewellers’ shops within the Borough of Wanganui, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 6 p.m., and on Fridays at 9 p.m.; except on the evenings of the two days prior to Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve each year, when the closing-hour shall be 9 p.m., and on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve the hour of closing shall be 11 p.m.: And whereas the Wanganui Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the watchmakers and jewellers’ shops within the Borough of Wanganui:

Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, Acting Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 9th day of July, 1917, all watchmakers and jewellers’ shops in the Borough of Wanganui shall be closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 6 p.m., and on Fridays at 9 p.m., with the following exceptions: (a) The evening of the two working-days immediately preceding Christmas Eve and the evening of the two working-days immediately preceding New Year’s Eve, when the closing-hour shall be 9 p.m.; (b) Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when the closing-hour shall be 11 p.m.

Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Grocers’ Shops in the Borough of New Plymouth under the Shops and Offices Act.


WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the grocers’ shops within the Borough of New Plymouth, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6 p.m., and on Saturdays at 9 p.m., with the following exceptions—(1) the period of from the 7th day of December to the 31st day of December in each year, when the closing-hour shall be optional; (2) any occupier who observes Saturday as the statutory half-holiday shall be entitled to keep his or her shop open on the Thursday till 6 p.m. and Friday till 9 p.m.; (3) should any day other than Thursday be observed as a holiday, the closing-hour for Thursday shall be 6 p.m.; (4) should any Saturday be generally observed as a holiday, the closing-hour on the previous Friday shall be 9 p.m.; (5) should Easter Saturday be generally observed as a holiday, the closing-hour for the preceding Thursday shall be 9 p.m.: And whereas the New Plymouth Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the grocers’ shops within the Borough of New Plymouth:

Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, Acting Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 9th day of July, 1917, all grocers’ shops within the Borough of New Plymouth shall be closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6 p.m., and on Saturdays at 9 p.m., with the following exceptions—(a) the evening of every working-day during the period from the 7th day of December to the 31st day of December inclusive, when there shall be no closing-hour; (b) any occupier who observes Saturday as the statutory half-holiday shall be entitled to keep his shop open on Thursdays till 6 p.m., and on Fridays till 9 p.m.; (c) should any day other than Thursday in any week be generally observed as a holiday in the Borough of New Plymouth, the closing-hour on Thursday for any grocer’s shop that is closed at not later than 1 p.m. on that holiday shall be 6 p.m.; (d) should any Saturday be generally observed as a holiday in the Borough of New Plymouth, the closing-hour on the previous Friday for any grocer’s shop that is closed at not later than 1 p.m. on that holiday shall be 9 p.m.; (e) should Easter Saturday be generally observed as a holiday in the Borough of New Plymouth, the closing-hour on the preceding Thursday for any grocer’s shop that is closed at not later than 1 p.m. on that holiday shall be 9 p.m.

Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Hairdressers’ and Tobacconists’ Shops in the Borough of Wanganui, under the Shops and Offices Act.


WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the (a) hairdressers’ and (b) tobacconists’ shops within the Borough of Wanganui, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at 6 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., and Saturdays at 9 p.m., except on the evening of the working-days immediately preceding the days mentioned in section 19 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, and on the evening of the working-days immediately preceding the undermentioned holidays—viz., Wanganui Agricultural Show days, Wanganui Jockey Club’s race days, Wanganui Trotting Club’s race days—and the evening of the last fourteen working-days in the month of December in each year (except Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve), when the closing-hour shall be 9 p.m.; and on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve the hour of closing shall be 11 p.m.: And whereas the Wanganui Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in the trade of (a) a hairdresser and (b) a tobacconist within the Borough of Wanganui:

Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, acting for the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 9th day of July, 1917, all hairdressers’ shops and all tobacconists’ shops in the Borough of Wanganui shall be closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at 6 p.m., on Fridays at 8 p.m., and on Saturdays at 9 p.m., with the following exceptions: (a) The evening of the working-day immediately preceding each of the following days—Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, the birthday of the reigning Sovereign, and any day which, pursuant to proclamation by the Governor-General, or declaration by the Government, or on the request of the Mayor or Chairman of a local authority, is generally observed as a public holiday or half-holiday, when the closing hour shall be 9 p.m.; (b) on the evening of the working-day immediately preceding each day of the Wanganui Agricultural Show, the Wanganui Jockey Club’s races, and the Wanganui Trotting Club’s races, when the closing-hour shall be 9 p.m.; (c) the evening of the last fourteen working-days in the month of December in each year (except Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve), when the closing-hour shall be 9 p.m.; and (d) Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when the closing-hour shall be 11 p.m.
