flashing white light showing 1 group of 2 flashes every 5 seconds —thus, flash 0·3 second, eclipsed 0·9 second ; flash 0·3 second, eclipsed 4·5 seconds. The light is exhibited 257ft. above high water, from an iron tower 28½ ft. high, on the largest of the islands, and is visible 15 miles.
Approx. position : Lat. 23° 0′ 46″ S. long. 42° 55′ 20″ W.
NOTE.—The Marica Islands are shown on the charts about 1¾ miles too far eastward.
SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.
FIJI ISLANDS.—VITI LEVU ISLAND.—SUVA HARBOUR.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—An occulting white light every 5 seconds —thus, light 3 seconds, eclipsed 2 seconds—has been established near the south-eastern extremity of the western reef at the entrance to Suva Harbour. The light is exhibited, 39 ft. above high water, from a white concrete pillar 40 ft. high, located ¾ mile 236° from the light on the northern end of the East Reef, and is visible 6 miles.
Approx. position : Lat. 18° 8′ 35″ S., long. 178° 22′ 55″ E.
SOUTH MINERVA REEF.—WRECK.—Captain Murchison, of the barque “ Lobo,” reports that on 16th January, 1916, he saw the wreck of a sailing-vessel on South Minerva Reef.
The masts of the wreck were gone, but the hull, which was painted grey, was apparently undamaged. The house aft was painted white.

CHINA.
KWANGTUNG PENINSULA.—SIGNALS CHANGED.—The following system of weather-forecast and storm-warning signals has been substituted for that formerly in use at Kwangtung Peninsula :—
Weather-forecast Signals.
A white triangular flag.—Northerly winds.
A green triangular flag.—Easterly winds.
A red triangular flag.—Southerly winds.
A blue triangular flag.—Westerly winds.
A white square flag.—Fair weather.
A red square flag.—Cloudy weather.
A blue square flag.—Rain.
A green square flag.—Snow.
A red broad pendant.—Sudden rise in temperature.
A white broad pendant.—Sudden fall in temperature.
Storm-warning Signals.
A red ball.—Winds, probably strong.
A red cylinder.—Winds, accompanied by rain or snow ; probably strong.
A red cone.—Probability of storm, accompanied by rain or snow.
At night a red lantern is used in place of the ball ; 2 red lanterns, vertical, take the place of the cylinder, and 3 red lanterns, vertical, the place of the cone.
Storm-warning signals are based upon the storm warnings issued at Kwangtung Government Observatory. Storm warnings are also posted on boards in the vicinity.

NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned lands are open for sale or lease to discharged soldiers under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act, 1915, and the regulations thereunder ; and applications will be received at this office up to 4 o’clock p.m. on Monday, 10th July, 1916.
The lands may be purchased for cash or on deferred payments, or selected on lease for sixty-six years, with right of renewal for further successive terms of sixty-six years and a right to acquire the freehold.
Applicants must appear personally before the Land Board for examination at the District Lands and Survey Office, Blenheim, on Tuesday, 11th July, 1916, at 10 o’clock a.m.
The ballot will be held at the conclusion of the examination of applicants.

SCHEDULE.
MARLBOROUGH LAND DISTRICT.—MARLBOROUGH COUNTY.—BLOCK 1, WAKAMARINA SURVEY DISTRICT.
Second-class Land.
SECTION 44 : Area, 230 acres. Capital value, £635. Instalment on deferred payment (without interest), £31 15s. Renewable lease : Half-yearly rent, £12 14s.
Altitude, 200 ft. to 850 ft. Short frontage on south boundary to main Ronga Road. About 80 acres flat, soil very fair ; balance steep hilly country, lower spurs fair soil, higher land poor. The bush, which has been milled, consists chiefly of birch, with scattered rimu. About 45 acres fired, now fairly cleared and in grass. Section is well watered. Distant about forty-eight miles from Blenheim and three-quarters of a mile from Timatanga Post-office.
Section 45 : Area, 254 acres 2 roods. Capital value, £765. Instalment on deferred payment (without interest), £38 5s. Renewable lease : Half-yearly rent, £15 6s.
Weighted with £12 15s., valuation for 21¼ chains fencing on Ronga Road.
Altitude, from about 220 ft. to 900 ft. The soil on the southern half of area on west of river is very fair on flats and hillsides. The northern portion consists of birch-covered spurs, the soil being poor. There is a fair quantity of milling-timber on the section, comprising chiefly birch, kahikatea, rimu, and matai. The area to east of river is the homestead-site. Good flat land cleared and in grass. Easy fords can be made across river. Distant a mile and a half from Timatanga Post-office.
The right to use the tramway through the sections is reserved to Messrs. Robertson Bros. during the pleasure of the Board. Messrs. Robertson Bros. to erect gates on boundaries when fences erected, and to keep gates closed except when tramway is actually in use.
