UNITED STATES, PACIFIC COAST.—JUAN DE FUCA STRAIT.

EDIZ HOOK.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTER OF LIGHT.—Date of alteration: On or about 15th June, 1914. Position: On east end of hook. Lat. 48° 8½′ N., long. 123° 24′ W. Abridged description of new light: Lt. gp. fl. (3) ev. 10 secs., 44 ft., vis. 12 m. Details: The fixed white light will be replaced by a light having the undermentioned characteristics: Character—a group flashing white light, showing a group of three flashes every ten seconds, thus, 3 flashes 5 secs., eclipse 5 secs.

CHINA, EAST COAST.—KYAU CHAU BAY.

TAI-KUNG-TAU REEF.—LIGHT AND WHISTLE BUOY ESTABLISHED.—Position: South-westward of reef, at a distance of 16·3 cables, 256° (S. 80° W. mag.), from Tai-kung-tau Lighthouse, in the position formerly occupied by the black bell-buoy which it replaces. Lat. 35° 57¼′ N., long. 120° 27½′ E. Description: A light and whistle buoy, painted white, and marked “T.R.,” surmounted by two white triangles bases apart, and exhibiting an occulting white light every six seconds—thus, light 4 secs., eclipse 2 secs.

CEYLON, EAST COAST.

BATTICALOA ROADS.—NEW LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—Position: At a distance of about 1·7 cables, 270° (west mag.), from position of former light on Batticaloa Signal-staff, which has now been discontinued. Lat. 7° 45½′ N., long. 81° 41′ E. Abridged description: Lt. gp. occ. (2) ev. 40 secs., 88 ft., vis. 15 m. Details: Character—a group occulting white light, showing a group of two eclipses every forty seconds—thus, eclipse 3 secs., light 3 secs.; eclipse 3 secs., light 31 secs. Elevation—88 ft. Visibility—15 miles. Order—4th. Structure—white tower, 93 ft. in height. Remarks: A note, “Position approximate,” has been placed against this light on the charts. Variation: Nil.

JAPAN.—INLAND SEA.

SHIMONOSEKI KAIKYO, WESTERN APPROACH.—WRECK REMOVED.—Former notice: No. 528 of 1914. Position: Eastward of Ozo-ne, at a distance of 8·9 cables, 323° (N. 33° W. mag.), from Manaita Iwa light. Lat. 33° 55½′ N., long. 130° 53¼′ E. Description: Wreck of a sailing-vessel. Variation: 4° W.

WASHINGTON.

SAN JUAN ISLAND.—HARO STRAIT.—LIME-KILN.—INTENDED LIGHT.—About 1st June, 1914, a flashing white light, of 130 candle-power, every 3 seconds—thus, light 0·3 second, eclipsed 2·7 seconds—will be established 30 ft. above the water at the Lime-kiln, on the western side of San Juan Island, Haro Strait, Washington, on the bearings—

Kelp Reefs light .. .. .. 300° 00′
The illuminating apparatus will be a 300-millimeter lens lantern on the roof of a small white wooden building. Approx. position: Lat. 48° 31′ N., long. 123° 9′ 5″ W.

COLUMBIA RIVER.—SAND ISLAND LIGHT DISCONTINUED.—On 1st May, 1914, Sand Island light, Columbia River, Washington, was permanently discontinued. Approx. position: Lat. 46° 15′ 35″ N., long. 123° 57′ 50″ W.

WASHINGTON SOUND.—BELLINGHAM BAY.—WHATCOM WATERWAY LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC CHANGED.—FOG-SIGNAL ESTABLISHED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 46 (3863) of 1913, further notice is given that on 20th April, 1914, the characteristic of the Whatcom Waterway light, Bellingham Bay, Washington Sound, was changed from fixed red to intermittent white every 10 seconds—thus, light 2·5 seconds, eclipsed 1 second; light 2·5 seconds, eclipsed 4 seconds. The illuminant was changed from oil to electricity. An electrically operated fog-signal which sounds 1 group of 2 blasts every 10 seconds—thus, blast 1·5 seconds, silent interval 2 seconds; blast 1·5 seconds, silent interval 5 seconds—was established at the station. Approx. position: Lat. 48° 44′ 42″ N., long. 122° 29′ 36″ W.

JAPAN.

WEST COAST.—SHIMONOSEKI STRAIT ENTRANCE.—HIRA SE.—LIGHT-BUOY ESTABLISHED.—The Japanese Government has given notice that on 30th March, 1914, a black light-buoy showing, 10 ft. above the water, an intermittent green light of 10 candle-power every 5 seconds—thus, light 3 seconds, eclipsed 2 seconds—visible 4 miles, was established in 8 fathoms of water off Hira Se Reef, western entrance to Shimonoseki Strait, Japan, on the bearings—

URUGUAY.

PLATA RIVER ENTRANCE.—LOBOS ISLAND.—OBSTRUCTION REPORTED NORTHWARD.—Information has been received through the American Consul at Rosario, Argentina, that the master of the Belgian steamer “Ertshandel” reports striking a submerged obstruction on 12th March, 1914, probably a wreck, ¼ mile 0° from Lobos Island light, Plata River entrance, Uruguay. The vessel was drawing 20 ft. 6 in. at the time. Approximate position of Lobos Island light: Latitude, 35° 1′ 15″ S., longitude 54° 53′ 15″ W.

CHINA.

EAST COAST.—KIAOCHOW BAY.—TSINGTAU.—YUNUISAN FOG-SIGNAL.—FURTHER INFORMATION.—The German Government has given notice that the fog-siren at Yunuisan Light-station, Tsingtau, Kiaochow Bay, east coast of China, which sounds 1 group of 2 blasts every minute, is operated only when signals from vessels are heard in the vicinity. Approx. position: Lat. 36° 2′ 42″ N., long. 120° 16′ 38″ E.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

MAUI ISLAND.—KAUIKI HEAD LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC CHANGED.—NEW STRUCTURE.—On 20th April, 1914, the characteristic of the light at Kauiki Head, Maui Island, Hawaiian Islands, was changed from fixed red to an unwatched flashing white light of 240 candle-power every 2 seconds—thus, flash 0·5 second, eclipsed 1·5 seconds. The new light is exhibited 85 ft. above high water and 12 ft. above the ground from a gray pyramidal concrete tower erected 5 yards 300° from the site of the old light. The old mast and service room were removed on the same date. Approx. position: Lat. 20° 45′ 30″ N., long. 155° 58′ 30″ W

LOWER CALIFORNIA.

WEST COAST.—CAPE SAN QUENTIN.—DISCOLOURED WATER (1903).—FURTHER INFORMATION.—The commanding officer of the U.S.S. “Glacier” reports under date of 30th April, 1914, having observed a breaker at the point marked “Discoloured water (1903)” on H.O. Charts Nos. 1149 and 1193, about 9 miles 180° from San Martin Island and off Cape San Quentin, west coast of Lower California. The breaker had the appearance of being over a rock rather than over a shoal. No discoloured water was observed. At the time of observation there was a long heavy north-west swell, but no white caps. Approx. position: Lat. 30° 19′ 45″ N., long. 116° 6′ W.

CALIFORNIA.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—WRECK REMOVED.—GAS AND BELL BUOY WITHDRAWN.—Notice is given that the gas and bell buoy moored to mark the wreck of the schooner “J. H. Lunsmann,” sunk off Black Point, San Francisco Bay, California, has been withdrawn, the wreck having been removed.

ALVISO CHANNEL.—BEACON TO BE DISCONTINUED.—About 15th May, 1914, Alviso Channel beacon 3, San Francisco Bay, California, will be permanently discontinued. Approx. position: Lat. 37° 32′ 5″ N., long. 122° 8′ 45″ W.

BEACON RE-ESTABLISHED.—Notice is given that Alviso Channel beacon No. 10, San Francisco Bay, California, which was destroyed, has been re-established. The new beacon consists of an iron pile with red horizontal slats and the number “10” in black, located 120 yards 0° from its former position. Approx. position: Lat. 37° 29′ 33″ N., long. 122° 5′ 22″ W.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

GULF ST. VINCENT.—PORT ADELAIDE RIVER.—Masters of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby informed that No. 3 beacon (white light) in the Port Adelaide River has been knocked down, and that pending its re-erection a temporary white light will be exhibited by night from a barge moored as nearly in the position of the original beacon as possible. This affects Admiralty Chart No. 1752. Marine Board Offices, Port Adelaide, 21st April, 1914.

WEST COAST.—WATERLOO BAY (PORT ELLISTON).—Masters of vessels and others are hereby informed that on and after the night of the 23rd May, 1914, two (2) lights will be established at Port Elliston, which in line lead over the deepest and smoothest water on the bar of Waterloo Bay.
