SECTION 1.
Regulating Traffic.
For the purpose of these by-laws the number or quantity mentioned in the following Schedule shall represent one ton avoirdupois in each of their several kinds :—
- Kauri timber, sawn or log .. 700 superficial feet.
- Sawn timber or logs other than kauri .. 500 superficial feet.
- Firewood .. .. .. 60 cubic feet.
- Boulders, gravel, or broken stone. 4/5 of 1 cubic yard.
- Squared stone .. .. ½ of 1 cubic yard.

- Wheat (4-bushel sacks) .. 10 sacks.

- Chaff (4-bushel sacks) .. 27 sacks.
- Potatoes, carrots, and turnips .. 12 sacks.

SECTION 2.
Weight of Load for Different Vehicles.
The following Schedule shows the width of tire required for the different kinds of vehicles, carrying the weights mentioned hereunder :—

This Schedule does not apply to vehicles carrying less than 10 cwt.
SECTION 3.
Traction-engines.
Pace-limit.
- No person shall drive a traction-engine at a pace exceeding four miles an hour on any road within the county, or at a pace of more than one and a half miles an hour whilst crossing any culvert or bridge.
Person in charge to give name when required.
- Every person in charge of a traction-engine on a road shall give his name and that of the owner whenever required so to do by any person riding, driving, or leading a horse, or by any officer of the Council.
Driver required to give notice of any damage done.
- The driver in charge of a traction-engine or bullock wagon shall give immediate notice to the Clerk, Engineer, or riding member of the Council of any damage or injury done by such engine or bullock wagon, or any carriage or machine attached thereto, to any road, bridge, fence, culvert, watercourse, drain, or any other thing forming part of or appertaining to any road ; and if such damage has rendered such road, bridge, culvert, or appurtenances thereof dangerous to traffic or public safety the owner of the engine or wagon shall, in addition to giving such notice as aforesaid, place and maintain in such position, and for such time as the Clerk, Engineer, or riding member may direct, such signals as shall be sufficient to give warning to all persons using such road, bridge, or culvert by day and by night of such danger.
Crossing bridges.
- The driver of a traction-engine drawing any carriage, machine, or wagon shall not take the same on or across any bridge of more than 10 ft. span unless and except planks are laid crosswise upon the decking of such bridge, and each such engine, carriage, machine, or wagon is at all times when crossing such bridge separated by the full length of such bridge from any other engine, carriage, machine, or wagon.
Not permitted to attach grippers or studs to wheels.
- No person shall drive upon any road any traction-engine to the wheels of which are attached (permanently or temporarily) studs, grippers, or other pieces of iron so placed, shaped, or constructed as to sink into or break the surface of the road.
Not permitted to remain stationary on bridge.
- No driver in charge of a traction-engine shall permit the same to stand upon a bridge for the purpose of drawing water, or for any other purpose, unless compelled to do so by accident or other unavoidable circumstance.
Disposal of cinders or ashes.
- No person shall discharge any ashes, cinders, or other refuse from a traction-engine upon any bridge or culvert, or upon any road within 20 ft. of the centre of such road, or unless such ashes, cinders, or refuse shall have been completely extinguished and spread out so as not to in anywise injure such road or any fence or anything thereon or adjacently thereto.
Must stop when required by persons riding or driving.
- The driver of a traction-engine, when travelling upon a road, shall so drive and manage his engine as to cause as little obstruction or annoyance as possible to any person using such road, and shall stop the engine when required so to do by any person desiring to ride, drive, or lead any horse or other animal past the engine, whether such person be meeting or overtaking the engine ; and for the purpose of requiring a driver to stop the engine as aforesaid it shall be sufficient if the person requiring the engine to stop signify the same to the driver by holding up one hand.
Going round bends, curves, or through cuttings.
- The driver of a traction-engine upon any road shall stop the engine before going round any bend in the road where his view of the road may be obstructed, and before entering any cutting or narrow part of the road where it would be difficult for a vehicle to pass the engine, unless and until the look-out man reports that the road through such bend, cutting, or narrow part is clear of traffic.
Engines not to be left standing.
- No person shall leave a traction-engine standing upon a road in such a position as to frighten or be calculated to frighten horses passing along the road.
Walking-pace over bridges.
- No person shall ride or drive any horse or other animal, or other engine, machine, or other vehicle on or over a bridge at other than a walking-pace.
SECTION 4.
Motors.
In this Part of these by-laws, if not inconsistent with the context,—
“Motor” shall have the meaning assigned to the word “motor” by section 2 of the Motor Regulation Act, 1908; and shall include a motor-car or motor-cycle (with or without a side car attached).
Must not obstruct traffic.
- No person in charge of a motor while on a road shall cause or permit or allow such motor to be driven or operated or to remain or stand on a road or bridge or culvert so as to unnecessarily obstruct or unduly interfere with the traffic thereon.
Precautions to be taken when leaving car.
- No person in charge of a motor-car when on a road shall quit such car without having taken due precautions against its starting in his absence.
