HOKIANGA RIVER ENTRANCE.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 9th August, 1913.

REFERRING to Notice to Mariners No. 55 of 1913, Captain Bollons, of the New Zealand Government steamer “Hinemoa,” reports that he made a careful search for the reported shoal off the entrance to Hokianga River.

Steamed over the given position, zigzagged north and south of it, and up and down the coast without getting any indication of shoal water.

The anchor was hanging 8 fathoms below the water all the time, and constant casts of the lead were taken. The water gradually shoaled from 35 to 18 fathoms sandy bottom. There was a heavy westerly swell running, and it was breaking on the bar in 4 and 4½ fathoms, but seaward of the bar there was not the slightest sign or indication of increase in the regular line of the swell.

Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Charts Nos. 1091A and 2525; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter vii, page 201.
