Every person who disobeys this order is liable to a penalty
of £50.

Small-pox.—Notice regulating Movements of Maoris.
Department of Public Health, Wellington,
I, Thomas Harcourt Ambrose Valentine, Chief Health
Officer, in pursuance of the powers conferred on me
by section 18 of the Public Health Act, 1908, do hereby
forbid any Maori in the North Island of New Zealand to
leave any place in which Maoris reside, and which place is
supposed to be infected with a dangerous infectious disease,
unless he proves to the satisfaction of an Inspector appointed
for the purpose that he has been vaccinated within one
month previously, or unless he produces a certificate which
shows to the satisfaction of such Inspector that he is not
likely to convey infection.
Every person who disobeys this order is liable to a penalty
of £50.

APPLICATIONS, to be made on forms obtainable at
this office, will be received up till noon on 31st
July, 1913, for the position of Inspecting Engineer, Public
Works Department. -
Applications must be addressed to the secretary to the
Public Service Commissioner, Wellington, and marked
“Application for Position of Inspecting Engineer.” -
Applications must embrace a statement of education
and experience, particulars of age, &c. The age must be
between thirty-five and fifty. -
Applicants must have had experience as engineer-in-
charge of the following classes of work: Location and
construction of important railways, comprising heavy
excavation in earth and rock; timber, concrete, and steel
bridges; steel viaducts; long tunnels in earth and rock;
platelaying, ballasting, and station-building; road location
and construction work of all classes. They must be able to
report on miscellaneous engineering works, have had
experience in the use of modern machinery for excavation
of earthworks and handling of materials, and have also been
actively engaged in the direct management of the above
classes of work. -
The appointment will be subject to the provisions of
the Public Service Act, 1912. -
The position will be graded in the Professional
Division. Salary, £600 per annum.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.
VANCOUVER ISLAND.—EAST COAST.—SAANICH INLET.—
SENANUS ISLAND.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—The Canadian
Government has given notice that an unwatched intermittent
white acetylene light has been established on Senanus Island,
Saanich Inlet, east coast of Vancouver Island.
The light is exhibited 30 ft. above high water from a beacon
consisting of a steel cylindrical tank standing on a concrete
base and surmounted by a pyramidal steel frame supporting
the lantern, the whole painted white, erected on the western
extremity of the island, and is visible 10 miles from all points
of approach.
Approx. position : Lat. 48° 35′ 33″ N., long. 123° 29′ 12″ W.
STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—BURRARD INLET.—VANCOUVER
HARBOUR.—PARTHIA SHOAL REMOVED.—LIGHT DISCON-
TINUED.—The Canadian Government has given notice that
Parthia Shoal, at the entrance to Vancouver Harbour, British
Columbia, has been removed by dredging to a depth of 30 ft.
at low water.
The temporary fixed white light established in connection
with dredging operations has been removed.
QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS.—HECATE STRAIT.—SKIDE-
GATE INLET.—LAWN POINT GAS AND BELL BUOY DISCON-
TINUED.—GAS AND WHISTLE BUOY ESTABLISHED.—The
Canadian Government has given notice that Lawn Point
gas and bell buoy, Skidegate Inlet, Queen Charlotte Islands,
British Columbia, has been discontinued, and a combination
gas and whistle buoy established 0·9 mile 113° from Lawn
Point, in (approximately) latitude 53° 25′ 36″ N., longitude
131° 53′ 10″ W.
The gas and whistle buoy is painted red, and shows an
intermittent white light.
WASHINGTON.
PUGET SOUND.—SEATTLE HARBOUR.—BUOY ESTAB-
LISHED.—On 1st April, 1913, mooring-buoy No. 8, a red
square steel buoy, was established in 32 fathoms of water,
in Seattle Harbour, Washington.
This buoy will be maintained by the City of Seattle.
Bearings will be published later.
CALIFORNIA.
PIEDRAS BLANCAS LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC AND POWER.
—The characteristic of Piedras Blancas light, sea-coast of
California, is fixed and flashing white every 15 seconds—thus,
light 7·5 seconds, eclipsed 3·2 seconds; flash 1·1 seconds,
eclipsed 3·2 seconds.
The luminous power of the fixed light is 36,000 candles,
and that of the flash 260,000 candles.
Approx. position : Lat. 35° 39′ 57″ N., long. 121° 17′ 1″ W.
SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—ALCATRAZ LIGHT-STATION.—IN-
TENSITY OF LIGHT INCREASED.—FOG-SIGNAL CHANGED.—
On 1st May, 1913, the intensity of the light at Alcatraz Light-
station, San Francisco Bay, California, was increased by
replacing the former incandescent oil-vapour light by an
electric arc light. The luminous power was increased from
21,000 to about 84,000 candles.
On the same date the fog-signal was changed from a bell
to an electric siren sounding 1 group of 2 blasts every 30 sec-
onds—thus, blast 4 seconds, silent interval 4 seconds; blast
4 seconds, silent interval 18 seconds.
Approx. position : Lat. 37° 49′ 28″ N., long. 122° 25′ 21″ W.
ALCATRAZ FOG-SIGNAL STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL CHANGED.
—On 1st May, 1913, the fog-signal at Alcatraz Fog-signal
Station, north-western point of Alcatraz Island, San Francisco
Bay, Cal., was changed from a bell to an electric siren sound-
ing 1 blast every 20 seconds—thus, blast 5 seconds, silent
interval 15 seconds.
EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.
BANKA STRAIT.—KALIAN PASS.—KARANG HAJI.—The
white conical buoy surm. by a ball has been moved 7 cables
erd., to 2° 5′ 3″ S., 105° 6′ 40″ E., on nrn. side of 2-fm. patch
(charted as a rk. carrying less than 6 ft.). May.
SOUTH AMERICA.
- PASSAGEM RKS.—The colour of the fl. lt. exh. from the
beacon (22° 50½′ S., 43° 10′ W.) has been altered from white
to red. 2. MANOES DE FORA RKS.—The colour of the fl. lt.
exh. from the lt.-buoy (22° 48½′ S., 43° 9′ W.) has been altered
from red to white. May.
ILHA GRANDE BAY.—RAPADA ISL.—A fl. white lt. every
9 secs. (fl. 3 secs., ecl. 6 secs.), elev. 28 ft., R. 10 miles, is
exh. from a red structure 23 ft. high, in 23° 9½′ S., 44° 39′ W.,
on S. extr. of Rapada Isl., nrn. side of approach to Parati
Bay. May.
- HOMEN RKS. LT.—A fl. white lt. every 12 secs. (fl.
5 secs., ecl. 7 secs.), elev. 26 ft., R. 8 miles, is exh. from a
white structure 16 ft. high, in 23° 2′ 6″ S., 44° 17′ 39″ W.,
on srn.-most head of Homen Rks. 2. PL. PASTO LT.—An
occ. red lt., vis. 4 secs., ecl. 4 secs., elev. 28 ft., R. 10 miles,
is exh. from a white structure 26 ft. high, in 23° 3′ 6″ S., 44°
14′ 24″ W., on the extr. of Pt. Pasto. May.
