GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

The Waihau Settlement comprises the estates formerly
known as Waihau, Ngaroto, and Peka Peka, and is bounded
on the south by the Tutaekuri River and on the west by the
Mangatutu Stream; two sections front on the Napier–Puke-
titiri Road, nineteen miles from Napier and two miles and
a half from Rissington School and Post-office. The Waihau
Stream and its tributaries run through the block.

The nearest point of the eastern end of the settlement
is eleven miles and a half from Puketapu by the main road
up the Tutaekuri River, and Puketapu is ten miles from
Napier. The south-east portion of the settlement is twenty-
six miles and a half from Hastings. The western portion
of the block is accessible by the main Napier–Puketitiri
Road (metalled) twenty-nine miles from Napier, and by a
formed by-road a mile and a half to the nearest point
of the settlement. The property consists chiefly of open
and scrub land, of which a large proportion is easily plough-
able; and fully 2,000 acres at the eastern end and 1,000 acres
at the western end have been ploughed and cropped with
success.

Elevation above sea-level varies from 330 ft. to 1,400 ft.
The eastern and middle portions of the settlement are chiefly
of marl formation resting on papa, with outcrops of volcanic
gravels and shell limestone. The western and north-western
parts consist chiefly of a light black loam containing some
pumice. A good proportion of this latter portion has been
cropped and consolidated by stocking, and carries an excellent
sward of English grasses.

The outside boundaries of the settlement are all fenced,
except where bounded by the Tutaekuri River and Man-
gatutu Stream and all along the road at the north-western
end. The interior fences have been adopted as much as
possible as boundaries of the subdivisions, so that a great
number of the sections are already sufficiently fenced to
hold stock.

The bulk of the sections are well watered by permanent
streams, and on all the sections water is easily obtainable.
There is a tri-weekly coach service from Napier to Puke-
titiri, leaving Napier Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and
returning Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. There are
accommodation-houses at Rissington, two miles and a half
from the eastern end of the block, and at Patoka, three miles
