THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

Ka Laau Point light, south-west coast of Molokai Island, Hawaiian Islands, was changed from a fixed white to a flashing white lens-lantern light every 10 seconds—thus, flash 1 second, eclipsed 2 seconds; flash 1 second, eclipsed 6 seconds.

The light is exhibited 151 ft. above the water and 17 ft. above the ground from a white, pyramidal, skeleton, iron tower, erected on the roof of a white iron service-room located on the bearings—

Ilio Point, tangent, 19° 30.

Lanai Island, left tangent, 115°.

Lanai Island, right tangent, 138°.

The illuminant is acetylene gas of about 490 candle-power. The old tower and adjacent outbuildings have been removed.

Approx. position: Lat. 21° 6′ 16″ N., long. 157° 18′ 47″ W.

OAHU.—SOUTH-WEST COAST.—BARBERS POINT LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC TO BE CHANGED.—FURTHER INFORMATION.—About 1st September, 1912, the characteristic of Barbers Point light, south-west coast of Oahu Island, Hawaiian Islands, will be changed from fixed white to flashing white, showing 1 group of 2 flashes every 5 seconds—thus, flash 0·1 second, eclipsed 1·1 seconds; flash 0·1 second, eclipsed 3·7 seconds—and not as previously stated.

The illuminant will be changed from oil to incandescent oil-vapour, and the new light will have a luminous power of about 70,000 candles.

Approx. position: Lat. 21° 17′ 58″ N., long. 158° 6′ 32″ W.

KAUAI ISLAND.—KAHALA POINT LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC CHANGED.—NEW STRUCTURE.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 20 (1515) of 1912, further notice is given that on 30th June, 1912, the characteristic of Kahala Point light, north-eastern coast of Kauai Island, Hawaiian Islands, was changed from fixed red to flashing white every 1 and 4/6 seconds—thus, flash ⅔ second, eclipsed 1 and 3/6 seconds. The light is an unwatched light of 235 candle-power exhibited 37 ft. above the water and 14 ft. above the ground from a white, pyramidal, skeleton, iron tower, erected on the roof of a white iron service-room, located 2 yards 89° from its former position.

The old mast and service-room have been removed.

Approx. position: Lat. 22° 9′ N., long. 159° 17′ 40″ W.

OAHU.—PEARL HARBOUR.—BEACONS DISCONTINUED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 19 (1434) of 1912, further notice is given that on 1st June, 1912, the following beacons at Pearl Harbour, Hawaiian Islands, were discontinued:—

Entrance range-beacons.

Inner Channel range-beacons.

Iroquois Point beacon 13.

West Loch beacon 14.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

VANCOUVER ISLAND.—DISCOVERY PASSAGE.—CAPE MUDGE LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL BUILDING.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 11 (759) of 1912, further information has been received through the American Consul at Victoria that a diaphone fog-signal is being installed at Cape Mudge Light-station, Discovery Passage, Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

The resonator of the new fog-signal will point in a 145° direction toward the Strait of Georgia.

Approximate position on H.O. Chart No. 2091: Latitude 50° 59′ 34″ N., longitude 125° 11′ 35″ W.

PREVOST PASSAGE.—JOAN ROCK.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.—A can buoy, painted red and black in horizontal bands, has been established by the Canadian Government on Joan Rock, Prevost Passage, British Columbia. The buoy is moored in 12 ft. of water between the two shoal heads.

Approx. position: Lat. 48° 41′ 12″ N., long. 123° 19′ 12″ W.

MILBANK SOUND.—SEAFORTH CHANNEL.—DALL PATCH.—ROCK REPORTED TO NORTHWARD.—BUOY MOVED.—Information has been received through the Branch Hydrographic Office, Port Townsend, of the existence of an uncharted rock about 100 yards northward of the former position of Dall Patch buoy, Seaforth Channel, British Columbia.

Dall Patch buoy has been moved and re-established about 100 yards 117° 30′ from this rock.

Note.—Vessels passing northward of the buoy should give it a berth of at least 400 yards; those passing southward should keep in mid-channel between the buoy and the shore.

Approx. position: Lat. 52° 12′ 57″ N., long. 128° 10′ 31″ W.

VANCOUVER ISLAND.—VICTORIA HARBOUR ENTRANCE.—BROTCHY LEDGE LIGHT.—CHANGE IN CHARACTERISTIC.—The characteristic of Brotchy Ledge light, Victoria Harbour entrance, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, has been changed from intermittent white every minute to intermittent white every 15 seconds—thus, light 10 seconds, eclipsed 5 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 48° 24′ 20″ N., long. 123° 23′ 40″ W.

CHINA SEA.

BILLITON ISLAND.—NORTH COAST.—BUDING BAY.—REEF REPORTED.—BEACONS ESTABLISHED.—The commander of the Netherlands surveying vessel “Sumbawa” reports a reef, with a least depth of 3 fathoms over it, 1,425 yards 122° from the summit of Keran Island, Buding Bay, north coast of Billiton Island, China Sea. A wooden beacon, with a ball topmark, has been established on this reef.

A wooden beacon, with a triangular topmark, has been established about 795 yards 109° from the same summit and a similar beacon 900 yards 133° from the summit.

Approximate position of Keran Island: Latitude 2° 33′ 12″ S., longitude 107° 59′ 24″ E.

BANKA ISLAND.—NORTH-EAST COAST.—GOAT REEF.—TEMPORARY LIGHT-BUOY ESTABLISHED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that a black light-buoy, showing an intermittent white light every 20 seconds—thus, light 10 seconds, eclipsed 10 seconds—has been temporarily established south-westward of Goat Reef, Banka Island.

Approx. position: Lat. 2° 12′ 18″ S., long. 106° 28′ 56″ E.

LIGHT-BUOYS TO BE WITHDRAWN—BUOY ESTABLISHED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the light-buoy marking Malan Tate (Fokke Reef), north-east coast of Banka Island, is to be replaced by a white conical buoy.

Approx. position: Lat. 1° 55′ 15″ S., long. 106° 14′ 30″ E.

The white light-buoy marking Sullivan Reef will be withdrawn.

CHINA.—YANG-TSE-KIANG APPROACHES.

Elgar Island.—Light established.

Position.—On the eastern end of Elgar Island. Lat. 30° 26′ N., long. 122° 31′ 27″ E., on Chart No. 1124.

Character.—A group flashing white light, showing a group of three flashes in quick succession every twenty seconds.

Elevation.—205 ft.

Visibility.—20 miles, from 39° (N. 42° E. mag.), through north, west, and south, to 112° (S. 65° E. mag.). Obscured elsewhere.

Order.—4th.

Structure.—A white, circular tower, with white dwelling-house 26 ft. high.

Remarks.—The arc of visibility of the above light has not been placed on the charts.

Variation.—3° W.

AUSTRALIA.—EAST COAST.

Port Jackson, Middle Harbour.—Leading-lights established.

Position.—On the south-western extreme of Grotto Point, at a distance of half a cable, 231° (S. 41° W. mag.), from the triangulation station to the north-eastward of Grotto Point. Lat. 33° 49′ 13″ S., long. 151° 15′ 48″ E.

Description.—A fixed white, red and green light.

Sectors.—Green from 276° (S. 86° W. mag.) to 287° (N. 83° W. mag.). White from 287° (N. 83° W. mag.) to 302° (N. 68° W. mag.). Red from 302° (N. 68° W. mag.) to 312° (N. 58° W. mag.). Obscured elsewhere.

Rear Light.

Position.—At a distance of 8·8 cables, 295° (N. 75° W. mag.), from the front light.

Character.—A fixed red light.

Remarks.—The above lights in line, 295° (N. 75° W. mag.), lead midway between Inner North Head and South Reef.

Variation.—10° E.

ALASKA.

BARANOF ISLAND.—WHALE BAY.—ROCKS REPORTED.—The following information of uncharted dangers in Whale Bay and Port Banks, west coast of Baranof Island, has been recently received:—

A sunken rock is reported to lie in about the middle of Whale Bay opposite the entrance of Port Banks. A patch of kelp marks the locality, and while examination found depths of about 7 fathoms, yet from the fact that a sharp break at low water with moderate swell was observed, a pinnacle rock with but little water over it is believed to exist somewhere in the kelp patch, and vessels should avoid it,
