Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Furniture and House-furnishing Shops in the City of Auckland under the Shops and Offices Act.


WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all shops that sell furniture and house-furnishings in the City of Auckland, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the city shall be closed in the evening of each working-day as follows: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 6 p.m., Wednesday at 1 p.m., Saturday at 9 p.m.; shops closing at 1 p.m. on Saturday in lieu of 1 p.m. on Wednesday to close at 9 p.m. on Friday:

And whereas the Auckland City Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all furniture and house-furnishing shops in the City of Auckland:

Now, therefore, I, William Ferguson Massey, Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that, from and after the 21st day of October, 1912, all furniture and house-furnishing shops in the City of Auckland shall be closed in accordance with such requisition.

Varied Notice fixing Closing-hours of Butchers’ Shops in the City of Christchurch under the Shops and Offices Act.


WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the butchers’ shops in the City of Christchurch has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops (excepting those shops wherein no meat is offered for sale other than pork, bacon, or small goods, and known as “pork-shops”) in the city shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, not later than 5 p.m.; Thursday (the day of the weekly half-holiday), not later than 1 p.m.; Saturday (the late night), not later than 7 p.m.; also that the hour of closing on the last working-day preceding Christmas and New Year’s Day shall be not later than 8 p.m.:

And whereas the Christchurch City Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all butchers’ shops (excepting those shops wherein no meat is offered for sale other than pork, bacon, or small goods, and known as “pork-shops”) within the City of Christchurch:

Now, therefore, I, William Ferguson Massey, Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do herby direct that, from and after the 21st day of October, 1912, all such shops in the City of Christchurch shall be closed in accordance with such requisition.

The notice gazetted on 10th June, 1909, fixing the closing-hours of butchers’ shops is hereby varied accordingly.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

SURABAYA STRAIT.—A lt.-buoy, black, exh. an occ. white lt., vis. 10 secs., ecl. 10 secs., is est., in connection with dredging operations, in 6° 53½′ S., 112° 44½′ E., in the wrn. fairway. Aug.

SAPEH STRAIT.—1. A fl. white lt., R. 27 miles, is to be exh. in 8° 40′ S., 119° 14′ E., from the summit of Kelapa Isl., and a F. white lt. is exh. 328 yds. nrd. of the fl. lt. These lts. in line will lead through the fairway between Mata Gateh and Barsu Panda Isls. 2. A fl. white lt., R. 15 miles, is to be exh. in 8° 33½′ S., 119° 22½′ E., on Tukoh Lehok Gebah Isl. Aug.

CHERIBON APPROACH.—(a.) The black can buoy, in 6° 46½′ S., 108° 48′ E., has been withdrawn. (b.) A lt.-buoy, black, exh. an occ. white lt., is est. in 6° 46′ S., 108° 49½′ E., 2¼ miles 294° (N. 67° W. mag.) from the nrn. extr. of Losari Pt. Aug.

AFRICA.

PORT NATAL.—On and after 1st Sept., 1912, the time-ball in 29° 52′ 44″ S., 31° 3′ 42″ E., on Cape Natal Bluff, will be dropped at 0h. 0m. 0s. S. Africa standard time, corresponding with 22h. 0m. 0s. G.M.T., instead of 1h. 0m. 0s. S. Africa standard time as at present. Aug.

ROBBEN ISL.—A F. white lt., elev. 15 ft., R. 4 miles, is est. in 33° 48¾′ N., 18° 22′ E., at the head of the jetty on the S.-ern. side of Robben Isl., 4½ cables 72° (S. 81° E. mag.) from Minto Hill lt. Aug.

PACIFIC OCEAN.

VOLCANO ISLANDS.—FORFANA OR ARZOBISPO ISL.—According to information received from various sources, the isl. marked “Forfana or Arzobispo Isl.” on the charts, in 25° 43′ N., 140° 43½′ E., does not exist; it has therefore been expunged. Aug.

SOUTH ATLANTIC OCEAN.

SOUTH GEORGIA.—LARSEN PT. LT.—A F. white lt., reported R. 12 miles, is exh. from a red frame structure, in 54° 13′ S., 36° 26′ W. Aug.

SAPPHO PT. LT.—A F. white lt., reported R. 12 miles, is exh. from a red frame structure, in 54° 17′ S., 36° 25′ W. Aug.

EDWARDS PT. LT.—A F. white lt., reported R. 4 miles, is exh., in 54° 18′ S., 36° 25′ W. Aug.

PENGUIN PT. LT.—A fl. white and red lt. every 17 secs.—fl. 2 secs., ecl. 15 secs.—showing red over Fridtjof Nansen Rks., reported R. 14 miles, is exh. from a white iron house, in 54° 25′ S., 36° 9′ W. Aug.

Note.—“Unreliable” has been charted against each of the foregoing lts., and has been added to the description of Cape Saunders lt. (54° 9′ S., 36° 32′ W.). Aug.

CAPE GEORGE LT.—Annually from 1st Oct. to middle of May, a fl. white lt. every 10 secs., elev. 120 ft., reported R. 14 miles, is exh. from a white iron house, in 54° 21′ S., 36° 12′ W. Aug.

INDIAN OCEAN.

CEYLON.—COLOMBO HARB.—The following alterations have been made in lts.: 1. (a.) S.W. breakwater extension lt., F. red, exh. from a Titan crane, in 6° 57¼′ N., 79° 50¾′ E., on nrn. end of breakwater extension, has been replaced by an occ. red lt., vis. 27 secs., ecl. 3 secs., elev. 56 ft., R. 13 miles, exh. from a concrete lt.-h. 61 ft. high. (b.) S.W. breakwater lt., F. red, on landing jetty at head of breakwater, has been replaced by an occ. red lt., lt. 7 secs., ecl. 3 secs., vis. from 162° (S. 17° E. mag.) through S., &c., to 14° (N. 15° E. mag.), elev. 32 ft., R. 7 miles, exh. from an iron column. 2. The occ. green lt. near slipway at head of harb. has been disc.

Note.—The note “Red and green lts. mark the entr. to the harb.” has been erased from Chart No. 68B. July.

AFRICA.

POMBA (PEMBA) BAY APPROACH.—A F. white lt., R. 10 miles, is exh. on Maunhane Pt. (12° 58′ S., 40° 36′ E.).

Note.—“Position approx.” has been charted against the above lt. July.

COLLISIONS WITH WRKS. OR WRK.-MRK. Vs.

Caution.—Numerous instances having occurred of vessels, in clear weather, approaching dangerously near to and sometimes fouling a wrk., when marked by a vessel exh. the regulation lts. and marks, thereby incurring serious risk or injury to themselves or the Wrk.-mrk. V. Mariners are warned that any vessel indic. by the customary wrk.-mark lts. by night or marks by day, as provided in the Uniform System of Buoyage for the United Kingdom, that she is marking the position of a sunken wrk., should be passed, giving her a wide berth, on the side on which 2 balls or 2 lts. are exh. July, 1912.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.—TONGA ISLANDS.

Honga Hapai Island, Submarine Volcano South-eastward of Position.—At a distance of about 2 miles, south-eastward, from Honga Hapai Island. Lat. 20° 35½′ S., long. 175° 29′ W.

Details.—A submarine volcano, having the appearance of a huge geyser, emitting continuous steam and smoke and intermittent volumes of water, was observed on the 29th April, 1912, by Capt. R. Crawford, master of the s.s. “Tofua,” in the position given above.
