Kumla (Canister) Island, Mergui Harbour approach, Bay of Bengal.

Approx. position: Lat. 12° 58′ 45″ N., long. 98° 26′ 34″ E.

KISSERAING ISLAND.—WHALE BAY.—ROCK REPORTED.—A rock, the depth over which was not ascertained, but on which the steamer “Bhadra,” drawing 8 ft., struck, has been reported in Whale Bay, Kisseraing Island, Bay of Bengal, in (approximately) latitude 11° 35′ 15″ N., longitude 98° 33′ E.

The symbol for a rock with less than 6 ft. over it will be placed on the charts in this position and marked “Position approximate.”

SANDOWAY RIVER ENTRANCE.—DRUNKEN SAILOR ROCK.—HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION.—Information has been received that Drunken Sailor Rock, Sandoway River entrance, Bay of Bengal, has risen to a height of 7 ft. above the water. Other rocks, previously submerged, have also risen, and the line of rocks, now above water, extends for a distance of over 90 ft.

Approx. position: Lat. 18° 32′ 40″ N., long. 94° 12′ 15″ E.

BASSEIN RIVER APPROACH.—DIAMOND ISLAND LIGHT REPLACED BY NEW LIGHT.—Information has been received that the fixed white light on Diamond Island, Bassein River approach, Bay of Bengal, has been replaced by a new light of 1,000 candle-power.

The new light is exhibited 164 ft. above the sea from the southern radiograph mast on the island, and is visible 15 miles.

The radiograph mast is located a short distance north-westward of the former position of the light.

Approx. position: Lat. 15° 51′ 45″ N., long. 94° 16′ 45″ E.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

OAHU.—SOUTH-WEST COAST.—BARBERS POINT LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC TO BE CHANGED.—NEW STRUCTURE.—About 1st September, 1912, the characteristic of Barbers Point light, south-west coast of Oahu Island, Hawaiian Islands, will be changed from fixed white to flashing white, showing 1 group of 2 flashes every 5 seconds—thus, flash 0·12 second, eclipsed 1·13 seconds; flash 0·12 second, eclipsed 3·63 seconds.

During alterations to the tower and lantern the present light will be exhibited from a temporary open framework pyramidal wooden tower located 3 yards 199° from the present tower.

The illuminant will be changed from oil to incandescent oil vapour, and the new light will have a luminous power of about 20,000 candles.

Approx. position: Lat. 21° 17′ 58″ N., long. 158° 6′ 32″ W.

MOLOKAI.—SOUTH-WEST COAST.—LAE O KA LAAU POINT LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC TO BE CHANGED.—NEW STRUCTURE.—About 15th June, 1912, the characteristic of Lae o Ka Laau Point Light, south-west coast of Molokai Island, Hawaiian Islands, will be changed from fixed white to flashing white every 10 seconds—thus, flash 1 second, eclipsed 2 seconds; flash 1 second, eclipsed 6 seconds.

The light will be exhibited 140 ft. above the water and 14 ft. above the ground from a white, pyramidal, skeleton, iron tower, erected on the roof of a white iron service room located 585 yards 111° 30′ from the present site of the light.

The old tower and adjacent outbuildings will be removed.

Approx. position: Lat. 21° 6′ 16″ N., long. 157° 18′ 47″ W.

MOLOKAI.—KAUNAKAKAI RANGE LIGHTS.—CHARACTERISTICS TO BE CHANGED.—NEW STRUCTURES.—About 15th June, 1912, the characteristics of Kaunakakai Range Lights, Molokai Island, Hawaiian Islands, will be changed as follows:—

The front light from fixed white to flashing white every 15 seconds—thus, flash 0·3 second, eclipsed 1·2 seconds.

The rear light from fixed red to intermittent white every 2 seconds—thus, flash 1 second, eclipsed 1 second.

Front Light.—The front light will be exhibited 27 ft. above the water and 25 ft. above the ground from a white, pyramidal, skeleton, iron tower erected on the roof of a white concrete service house, located (approximately) 80 yards 215° from the site of the present front light.

Rear Light.—The rear light will be exhibited about 40 ft. above the water and 37 ft. above the ground from a white, pyramidal, skeleton, iron tower with a white iron service room at the base, located 200 yards 35° from the front light.

The old masts will be removed and the daymarks transferred to the new structures.

Both lights will be unwatched and both will use acetylene gas as an illuminant.

WASHINGTON.

WILLAPA BAY.—WHISTLE-BOUY REPLACED BY GAS AND WHISTLE BUOY.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 14 (990) of 1912, further notice is given that on 6th May, 1912, Willapa Bay outside bar whistle-buoy, Willapa Bay, Washington, was replaced by a combination gas and whistle buoy showing an intermittent white light of about 820 candle-power every 8 seconds—thus, light 4 seconds, eclipsed 4 seconds.

The combination buoy is conical, with pyramidal skeleton superstructure.

Approx. position: Lat. 46° 40′ 30″ N., long. 124° 11′ 15″ W.

PUGET SOUND.—SALMON BAY.—LIGHT MOVED.—Salmon Bay inner light, Puget Sound, Washington, which was carried away by collision on 17th April, 1912, has been moved about 50 yards 203° 30′ from its former position and re-established on a new structure, painted white.

The light is exhibited on the bank, 12 ft. above the water and 10 ft. above the ground, from a cross-arm attached to a post.

DESTRUCTION ISLAND LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL TO BE CHANGED.—About 1st July, 1912, the first-class steam siren at Destruction Island Light-station, sea-coast of Washington, will be replaced by a first-class compressed-air siren operated by oil engines, which will sound as follows: Blast 2 seconds, silent interval 13 seconds.

The new fog-signal will be established in a one-story concrete building, with cement coloured walls and brown roof, located immediately eastward of the old fog-signal building, which will be removed.

WASHINGTON SOUND.—LOPEZ ISLAND.—SOUTH-WEST COAST.—TWIN ROCKS.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 17 (1227) of 1912, further notice is given that on 20th May, 1912, a fixed white light of about 45 candle-power was established on Twin Rocks, a ledge in the passage between Charles Island and the south-western shore of Lopez Island, Washington Sound, on the bearings:—

Charles Island, left tangent, 120°.

Charles Island, right tangent, 133°.

Long Island, right tangent, 254°.

The light is exhibited 10 ft. above the water from an arm on a 4 in. iron pipe set in a socket on a concrete foundation placed on the ledge.

The structure is painted white.

Approx. position: Lat. 48° 26′ 50″ N., long. 122° 54′ 45″ W.

SUMATRA.

SOUTH COAST.—TELOK BETUNG.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—LIGHT-BOUY WITHDRAWN.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 8 (485) of 1911, the Netherlands Government has given further notice that an intermittent white light every 4 seconds—thus, light 2 seconds, eclipsed 2 seconds—has been established on a beacon on the ½-fathom reef eastward of Pasarang, south coast of Sumatra, 2,570 yards 168° from Telok Betung light. The light is shown, 59 ft. above the sea, from a white iron framework and is visible 12 miles.

The black light-buoy moored off the reef has been withdrawn, but the flashing light at Telok Betung will be maintained until further notice.

Approx. position: Lat. 5° 28′ 12″ S., long. 105° 16′ 38″ E.

CHINA.

YANGTZE RIVER.—NORTH CHANNEL.—DRINKWATER POINT LIGHT-VESSEL.—SUBMARINE BELL DISCONTINUED.—Information dated 21st March, 1912, has been received that the submarine bell on Drinkwater Point light-vessel, Yangtze River, has been discontinued.

Approx. position: Lat. 31° 24′ 48″ N., long. 121° 50′ 35″ E.

OREGON.

CAPE BLANCO.—ORFORD REEF.—GAS AND WHISTLE BUOY ESTABLISHED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 17 (1226) of 1912, further notice is given that on 23rd May, 1912, Orford Reef gas and whistle buoy 20R, conical, surmounted by a pyramidal skeleton superstructure, and showing an intermittent white light of about 820 candle-power every 10 seconds—thus, light 5 seconds, eclipsed 5 seconds—was established in 44 fathoms of water ¾ mile 270° from Fox Rock, Orford Reef, sea-coast of Oregon.

Bearings will be published later.

Approximate position of Fox Rock: Latitude 42° 46′ N., longitude 124° 38′ 10″ W.
