thus, blast 1½ seconds, silent interval 13½ seconds—will be
established on McLaughlin Point, western side of the en-
trance to Victoria Harbour, Vancouver Island, British
Columbia.

The fog-signal will be established in a rectangular wooden
building, painted white, with gable roof.

The horn will be elevated 24 ft. above high water, and
will project from the southern end of the building.

Approx. position : Lat. 48° 25′ 5″ N., long. 123° 24′ 13″ W.

SUMATRA.

EAST COAST.—GELAM STRAIT.—SHOAL REPORTED.—The
commander of the Netherlands man-of-war “De Zeven Pro-
vincien” reports the discovery of a shoal with a least depth
of 2½ fathoms over it in Gelam Strait, east coast of
Sumatra, in (approximately) latitude 0° 59′ 7″ N., longi-
tude 103° 21′ 17″ E.

EAST INDIA ISLANDS.

KE ISLANDS.—REEF REPORTED.—The master of the
steamer “Elout” reports the discovery of a reef, with a
least depth of 2 fathoms over it, westward of Nuhu Yut,
Ke Islands, East India Islands, in (approximately) lati-
tude 5° 33′ 30″ S., longitude 132° 58′ E.

JAVA.

NORTH COAST.—BATAVIA ROADSTEAD.—EDAM ISLAND.—
CHANGE IN LIGHT-BUOYS.—The Netherlands Government
has given notice that the following changes have been made
in the light-buoys in Batavia Roadstead, Java :—

The light-buoy exhibiting a fixed green light and the
one exhibiting a flashing red light near Edam Island (see
Notice to Mariners No. 16 (1039) of 1911) have been with-
drawn.

A light-buoy, exhibiting a fixed white light, will be
temporarily established southward of Kuiper Reef, in (ap-
proximately) latitude 6° 2′ 42″ S., longitude 106° 44′ 24″ E.

A light-buoy, exhibiting a flashing white light, will be
temporarily established southward of Neerstuk Reef, in
(approximately) latitude 6° 4′ 48″ S., longitude 106° 50′ 6″ E.

CALIFORNIA.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—PENINSULA POINT.—BELL-BUOY
ESTABLISHED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 51
(3691) of 1911, further notice is given that about 17th
January, 1912, Peninsula Point bell-buoy 1, painted black,
was established in 48 ft. of water, at the western end of
Maccoon Strait, San Francisco Bay, on the bearings :—

Bluff Point, right tangent, 39°.
Angel Island Lighthouse, 113°.
Sausalito Ferry Slip, left tangent, 252°.

MARE ISLAND STRAIT.—LIGHTS ESTABLISHED.—Referring
to Notice to Mariners No. 51 (3692) of 1911, further notice
is given that on 23rd January, 1912, the following fixed
white electric lights, each of about 240-candle power, were
established in Mare Island Strait, San Francisco Bay,
California :—

Mare Island Dike light No. 14, 17 ft. above the water,
on an iron post on the end of the dike, on the bearings :—

Starr Mile, cupola, 9°.
Carquinez Strait Lighthouse, 106°.
Mare Island Lighthouse, 291° 30′.

Mare Island Dike Light No. 4, 17 ft. above the water, on
an iron post on the end of the dike, on the bearings :—

Commission Rock beacon, 70°.
Starr Mill, cupola, 134°.
Vallejo, Gasworks Wharf, left tangent, 357°.

HUMBOLDT BAY.—INDIAN ISLAND SPIT LIGHT RE-ESTA-
BLISHED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 30 (2073)
of 1911, further notice is given that Indian Island Spit
Light, Humboldt Bay, California, which was destroyed
11th July, 1911, has been re-established in its former posi-
tion. The light is shown 19 ft. above the water from the
top of a 3-pile dolphin.

Approx. position : Lat. 40° 48′ 8″ N., long. 124° 10′ 53″
W.

SANTA BARBARA CHANNEL.—RICHARDSON ROCK.—LIGHT TO
BE ESTABLISHED.—About 15th March 1912, a flashing white
acetylene light of about 530-candle power, showing 1 flash
every 3 seconds—thus, flash 0·3 second, eclipsed 2·7 seconds
—will be established on Richardson Rock, north-westward
of San Miguel Island, Santa Barbara Channel, California.

The light will be exhibited 120 ft. above the water from
the top of a black, rectangular, skeleton tower, located on
the following bearings :—

Point Conception Lighthouse, 7°.
Santa Barbara Lighthouse, 66°.
Castle Rock, right tangent, 125° 30′.

Approx. position : Lat. 34° 6′ N., long. 120° 31′ 12″ W.

POINT PINOS LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC TO BE CHANGED.—
About 30th March, 1912, the characteristic of Point Pinos
Light, sea-coast of California, will be changed from fixed
white to intermittent white every 30 seconds—thus, light
20 seconds, eclipsed 10 seconds.

Approx. position : Lat. 36° 38′ 1″ N., long. 121° 55′ 30″ W.

SAN LUIS OBISPO BAY.—SHOAL DISCOVERED.—BUOY TO BE
ESTABLISHED.—A rocky shoal, about 60 ft. long in a north-
west-southeast direction and 10 ft. wide, with a depth of
4½ fathoms over it and 5 to 5½ fathoms around, has been
discovered in San Luis Obispo Bay, California, about 180
yards 153° 30′ from the south-eastern corner of Port Har-
ford Wharf.

The shoal has been marked temporarily by a red and
black barrel buoy. A first-class spar buoy, painted in hori-
zontal bands, will be established in 4½ fathoms of water
about 183 yards 153° 30′ from the south-eastern corner of
the wharf. Bearings will be published later.

SAN PABLO BAY.—ENTRANCE TO CARQUINEZ STRAIT.—IN-
TENDED LIGHTS AND FOG-SIGNAL.—About 20th February,
1912, the following lights will be established by the Union
Oil Company on the wharf at Oleum, southern side of the
entrance to Carquinez Strait, San Pablo Bay, California :—

Oleum Wharf East Light, a fixed white, incandescent,
electric light of about 200-candle power, shown 35 ft. above
the water on the eastern end of the wharf, on the bear-
ings :—

Mare Island Lighthouse, 16°.
Carquinez Strait Lighthouse, 46° 45′.
Selby West Wharf, west end, right tangent, 90° 30′.

Oleum Wharf West Light, a fixed white, incandescent,
electric light of about 200-candle power, shown 35 ft. above
the water on the western end of the wharf, on the bear-
ings :—

Mare Island Lighthouse, 18° 15′.
Carquinez Strait Lighthouse, 48°.
Selby West Wharf, west end, right tangent, 89°.

On the same date Oleum Wharf Fog-bell, a 1,000-pound
bell, struck by machinery, 1 stroke every 5 seconds, will be
established in the centre of the head of the wharf.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—EAST BROTHER SHOAL.—BUOY DIS-
CONTINUED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 50 (3692)
of 1911, further notice is given that on 1st February, 1912,
East Brother Shoal buoy 0, a first-class nun, marking a
15-foot shoal westward of East Brother Island Light, San
Francisco Bay, California, was permanently discontinued.

Approx. position : Lat. 37° 57′ 54″ N., long. 122° 26′ 20″ W.

SANTA BARBARA CHANNEL.—ANACAPA ISLAND.—LIGHT TO
BE ESTABLISHED.—About 15th March, 1912, a flashing white
acetylene light of about 530-candle power, showing 1 group
of 2 flashes every 15 seconds—thus, flash 1 second, eclipsed
3 seconds; flash 1 second, eclipsed 10 seconds—will be
established about 250 yards westward of the eastern end
of Anacapa Island, Santa Barbara Channel, California.

The light will be exhibited 170 ft. above the water from
the top of a black, rectangular, skeleton, steel tower located
on the following bearings :—

Point Hueneme Lighthouse, 44°.
Santa Cruz Island, right tangent, 283° 30′.
Santa Barbara Lighthouse, 322°.

Approx. position : Lat. 34° 0′ 45″ N., long. 119° 21′ 45″ W.

HUMBOLDT BAY ENTRANCE.—GAS AND WHISTLE BUOY TO
BE ESTABLISHED.—WHISTLE-BUOY TO BE DISCONTINUED.—
About 1st April, 1912, Humboldt Outside Bar gas and
whistle buoy, painted in perpendicular stripes, and show-
ing a flashing white acetylene light every 10 seconds—thus,
flash 2 seconds, eclipsed 8 seconds—will be established in
the approach to Humboldt Bay, California, in the position
now occupied by Humboldt Outside Bar whistle buoy,
which will then be discontinued.

Approx. position : Lat. 40° 46′ 40″ N., long. 124° 15′ 40″ W.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—SUISUN BAY.—ARMY POINT GAS-
BUOY NUMBERED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 2
(79) of 1912, further notice is given that on 1st February,
1912, Army Point Gas-buoy, Suisun Bay, California, was
numbered 1a.
