The latest soundings show 17 ft. L.W.S. with flagstaff bearing E. by N. to E. ¾ N., and only 13 ft. L.W.S. along the line of bearing of flagstaff E. by N. ½ N. where in July this line showed 17 ft.

NEW SOUTH WALES.—SHELL, ETC., PRACTICE NEAR SYDNEY HEADS.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 19th September, 1911.
THE Navigation Department at Sydney notifies that the military authorities have requested that attention be drawn to the fact that when a red flag is flying from any of the forts or rifle ranges visible at sea on the coast-line between North Head and Botany Bay it is an indication that shot-and-shell practice or rifle-firing seawards is taking place. Masters of all steamers and persons in charge of sailing-boats and craft of every description are warned that their vessels must be navigated at least three miles from the coast when a red flag is flying, and they should not remain anywhere in the vicinity of the targets.
