Soil of medium quality, on sandstone formation; well watered by stream. Situated on the Waikawau Road, twenty-two miles from Awakino—twelve miles formed dray-road, balance 6 ft. track.

AWAKINO COUNTY.—MAUNGAMANGERO SURVEY DISTRICT.

Altitude, 750 ft. to 2,250 ft. above sea-level. Broken country, covered with mixed forest comprising tawa, rata, rimu, hinau, miro, rewarewa, and pukatea, with fairly thick undergrowth of mahoe, supplejack, kiekie, matipo, &c. Soil of good quality, brown and grey papa, on sandstone-and-slate formation; well watered by Awakino River and branch streams. Situated twelve miles and a half from Mahoenui Post-office—eight miles formed bridle-track, balance unformed.

Altitude, 650 ft. to 2,250 ft. above sea-level. Broken country, covered with heavy mixed forest comprising tawa, rata, rimu, rewarewa, hinau, miro, and kahikatea, with fairly dense undergrowth of mahoe, supplejack, kiekie, kotukutuku, &c. Soil of good quality, on sandstone-and-slate formation; well watered by Awakino River and branch streams. Situated on the Upper Awakino Valley Road, eleven miles from Mahoenui Post-office—eight miles formed bridle-track, balance unformed.

Opening Lands in Southland Land District for Sale or Selection.

ISLINGTON, Governor.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the Land Act, 1908, I, John Poynder Dickson-Poynder, Baron Islington, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, having received the report of the Under-Secretary in this behalf, as provided by section one hundred and fifty-four of the said Act, do hereby declare that the lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on Wednesday, the twenty-fifth day of October, one thousand nine hundred and eleven; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase, or on renewable lease; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of the Land Act, 1908.

SCHEDULE.
SOUTHLAND LAND DISTRICT.

FIRST-CLASS LAND.

Southland County.—Invercargill Hundred.

Situation good. Access by good road to within, say, three-quarters of a mile of Section 6, half of the distance being formed, balance unformed. Distance from school, one mile and a half; from Longbush Railway-station and post-office, three miles; and nine miles from Invercargill. Land generally level; soil fair. Bush worked out by sawmills, but timber available for fencing and firewood.

Southland County.—Winton Hundred.

Situation good. Access by good metal road. Distance three miles from Winton Post-office, railway-station, school, and dairy factory. Land flat; worked out by sawmill, but sufficient timber for fencing and firewood; soil fair.

SECOND-CLASS LAND.

Wallace County.—Alton Survey District.

Situation fair. Distant six miles from Tuatapere Railway station, post-office, and school. Dairy factory in course of erection at Tuatapere. Bush land, timber consisting chiefly of birch, with a sprinkling of red-pine and totara; well watered; land ridgy. When cleared, about 200 acres ploughable. Soil good. Roads in course of construction.

Situation fair. Distance five miles from Tuatapere Railway-station, post-office, and school. Dairy factory in course of erection at Tuatapere. Heavy bush land, principally birch and red-pine; well watered; soil good. Weighted with £64 7s. 6d., valuation for sawmilling timber. If selected for cash, one-third of the amount must be paid immediately the application is approved, the balance to be paid at the same time as the balance of the purchase-money. If the section is selected on occupation with right of purchase or renewable lease, one-third of the amount must be paid with the first half-year's rent, the balance within twelve months from date of selection. The lease or license shall, however, contain a condition that it shall be immediately forfeited if the value of the timber is not paid on demand. After the first payment the time for the payment of the balance may be extended on proof that the timber has not been sold, felled, or destroyed.

Southland County.—Invercargill Hundred.

Weighted with £6 7s., valuation for improvements.
Situated about six miles from Makarewa School and post-office, and about twelve miles from Invercargill. Land level, containing about 12 acres open land in tussock, balance covered with light manuka scrub. Soil peaty.

Situation very fair. Access by formed roads to south-west corner of Section 72 and south-east corner of Section 73. Distance from Waimatua Railway-station and post-office, two miles and a half; from One-tree Point Railway-station, post-office, and school, three miles; and from Invercargill by rail, seven miles. Land generally level; bush worked out by sawmills; soil good, swampy in places.

Generally speaking, level land; soil good, but swampy in places; worked out by sawmills, and bush fires have been through the section. Timber fit for firewood and fencing. Situated about three miles and a half from Longwood Railway-station.

Southland County.—Oteramika Hundred.

Situated south of Seaward Forest, about seven miles from Kapuka. Open land, low-lying and wet in places.
