CHILE.
MAGELLAN STRAIT.—JENTE GRANDE BAY.—HYDROGRAPHIC
INFORMATION.—S. C. Loveland, master of the American
steam-yacht “Alcedo,” reports that he entered Jente Grande
Bay, Magellan Strait, drawing 17 ft., and found it easy of
access, and a clean body of water, deep, and with no tide-rips
of consequence. He further states that the beacon on
Quartermaster Island was easily distinguished from a long
distance, and was of assistance.
Captain Loveland recommends the southern channel, the
shoals on the southern side of which are generally made out
by the change in the colour of the water rather than by
kelp. Serpiente Shoal, on the northern side, is always dis-
tinguishable either as a sand bar or by tide-rips.
Approximate position of Quartermaster Island beacon :
Latitude 52° 57′ S., longitude 70° 21′ 50″ W.
INFORMATION CONCERNING AIDS TO NAVIGATION.—The fol-
lowing information has been received concerning the aids to
