Notice to Mariners No. 106 of 1910.

THE following extracts from Notices to Mariners, received from the Board of Trade, London, are published for general information.

AFRICA.

ALGOA BAY.—BIRD ISL. LT.—About 3rd Aug., 1910, this gp. fl. white lt. (33° 50′ S., 26° 17′ E.) is to be increased in power. Aug.

HOOD PT. LT.—About 13th Aug., 1910, this gp. fl. white lt. (33° 2′ S., 27° 54′ E.) is to be increased in power, without alteration of char. A F. green elec. lt., R. 2 miles, is exh. from an iron frame 30 ft. high, on the outer end of the ern. breakwater, Buffalo River entr., for the use of small vessels entering the river. Aug.

MAURITIUS.

PORT LOUIS AND APPROACH.—1. (a.) About 1st Oct., 1910, a main lt., gp. fl. white, with a gp. of 2 fls. every 10 secs. : Fl. ¼ sec., ecl. 1½ secs. ; fl. ¼ sec., ecl. 8 secs. ; elev. 146 ft., R. 18 miles, is to be exh. from a cement lt.-h. 97 ft. high, in 20° 11½′ S., 57° 24¾′ E., on Caves Pt. (b.) A subsidiary lt., F. red. vis. from S.W. to the land nrd. of the lt., over the anchorage in Port Louis, elev. 100 ft., R. 10 miles, is to be exh. on n.-ern. side of the lt.-h. Vessels should anchor well within the wrn. limits of this lt. or they will not be in soundings. 2. The red bell buoy, in 20° 8½′ S., 57° 29′ E., on nrn. side of entr. to harb., is to be replaced by a lt.-buoy, black and white vert., exh. an occ. white lt. 3. The lt.-v. exh. a fl. white lt., on nrn. side of entr. to harb., is to be withdrawn. Aug.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

SINGAPORE MAIN STRAIT.—The occ. white lt. (U), vis. 1½ secs. ecl. 2½ secs., R. 10 miles, is exh. from a beacon in 1° 11¼′ W., 103° 53′ E., on the wrn. of the 2 reefs known as Batu Beranti 2¾ cables N. 88° W. from its present charted position; and the white lt.-buoy, exh. an occ. white lt., about 2 cables nrd. from Batu Beranti lt., has been withdrawn. Aug.

BANKA ISL.—LIAT BAY APPROACH.—A reef, carrying 3 fms., exists with the N.E. extr. of Tanjong Batu (1° 45¼′ S., 106° 6¼′ E.), N. 54° W., 3¹⁄₁₀ miles, and the S.E. extr. of Tanjong Liajang, S. 16° W. Aug.

(a.) Karang Pedis Utara Reef is about 8 cables N. 73° W. from its present charted position, and lies with Gunong Raja (1° 54′ S., 106° 11½ E.), S. 67° W., 4⁷⁄₁₀ miles. (b.) Karang Pedis Selata shoal and buoy are 5 cables N. 24° E. from their present charted position, and lie with Gunong Raja, S. 83° W., 4 miles. The name “Muntock” charted against this reef should be erased. The depth over the reef has altered to 2 fms. Aug.

CHINA SEA, ETC.

MACAO APPROACH.—Soundings recently obtained in Great West Chan., erd. of Apomi Pt. (22° 4¾′ N., 113° 33′ E.), indic. that the depths have decreased by about 2 fms. for a dist. of nearly 4 miles from the pt. A note to this effect has been charted. Aug.

YANG TSE KIANG ENTR.—The colour of Drinkwater Pt. Lt.-buoy has been altered from white to red, the buoy has been moved 6 cables S., and now lies in 31° 23½′ N., 121° 59¾′ E., marking the nrn. side of the chan. Aug.

TSUNG MING CROSSING.—The colour of the second crossing lt.-buoy has been altered from black to red, and the buoy lies in 31° 27¾′ N., 121° 31¾′ E., marking the starb-side of the chan. for inward-bound vessels. To obtain the best water vessels should pass the first crossing-buoy at a dist. of 2 cables and the second crossing-buoy at a dist. of 1 cable. On this route the least depth at present is 12 ft. [NOTE.—A new edition of Charts Nos. 3585 and 2809, which are affected by this notice, are shortly to be issued showing the above-mentioned alteration.] Aug.

WUSUNG RIVER.—The tidal sigs. at the Customs Sig.-station to indic. the depths on the Wusung inner bar have been disc., and the depth of water in Astræa Chan. is now shown from a sig. mast near Wusung Lt.-h. (31° 23¼′ N., 121° 30′ E.), and from a sig. mast on the srn. side of the entr. to Kao Chiao Creek. The yard at Kao Chiao Sig.-station points E. and W., and the sigs. made from the ern. and wrn. yardarms respectively correspond with those made from the nrn. and srn. yardarms respectively of the Wusung Sig.-mast. Sigs.—(a.) The depth of water in Astræa Chan. is indic. from the above-mentioned sig.-station by spher. shapes by day and white lts. by night, as follows :—

A spher. shape by day and a white lt. by night will be hoisted at the masthead when the tide is rising, and will be kept up so long as the tide continues to rise, and another shape or lt. at the gaff will indic. an additional depth of 6 inches. (b.) The difference between the depth of the water in Astræa Chan. and on the Wusung outer bar is shown below the parapet of Wusung Lt.-h., during the daytime, by means of symbols, as follows :—

When the depth of water on Wusung outer bar is more than that in Astræa Chan. the sigs. are shown on the wrn. side of the lt.-h., and when less on the srn. side. A new edition of Charts Nos. 1601 and 3585, which are affected by this notice, will shortly be issued, showing the alteration in the sig.-stations. Aug.

WEI HAI WEI ANCHORAGE.—The black can buoy, exh. an occasional green lt., marking 19 ft. patch over a wrk., 2 cables S. 14° W. from the outer end of Cowan pier (37° 30′ N., 122° 14¼′ E.) has been withdrawn. Aug.

Buoys withdrawn : (a) Black and red conical, 5³⁄₁₀ miles S. 47° E. ; (b) black conical, 3 miles S. 47° E. ; (c) red conical, 1½ miles S. 27° E. ; and (d) red conical, 1²⁄₁₀ miles S. 23° E. from north fort lt.-h. (38° 59¾′ N., 117° 42½′ E.). The use of the old chan. across the bar has been disc., and the Ferguson Chan. will be maintained in the future. The bar lt.-boat has been moved, and now lies about 1 cable nrd. of the intersection of the leading-marks for Ferguson Chan. and the next reach of the river entr., about 2⁸⁄₁₀ miles S. 50° E. from north fort lt.-h. [NOTE.—The 2 notes “Marks for Red buoys” and “Marks for Black buoy,” shown on the chart near the coast srd. of the river entr., should be expunged.] Aug.

SULU SEA.—VALPARAISO SHOAL.—The s.s. “Shantung,” drawing 19 ft., touched on, or in the vicinity of, Valparaiso shoal (7° 52′ N., 118° 27′ E.). The depth on this bank is therefore assumed to be about 3 fms. instead of 6 fms. as at present charted. Aug.

Notice to Mariners No. 107 of 1910.

MANUKAU HARBOUR.—BEACON RE-ERECTED.

Wellington, N.Z., 7th October, 1910.

WITH reference to Notice to Mariners No. 13 of the 21st February, 1910, notice is hereby given that a new beacon, painted red, has been erected off the Railway Wharf, in Manukau Harbour, to replace the old one which collapsed. The red buoy which was temporarily laid to mark the position has been removed.

Charts, &c., affected : Admiralty Chart No. 2726 ; “New Zealand Pilot,” 8th edition, 1908, Chap. vii, page 218.
