WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL.

Notice of Result of Poll on Proposal to raise a Loan.

PURSUANT to section 13 of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1908, I hereby give notice that at a poll of the ratepayers of the County of Waiapu taken on the 24th day of September, 1910, on the proposal of the Waiapu County Council to borrow the sum of £75,000 for works as follows :—

(a.) Widening and metalling fifty miles of the main county road between Mangatuna and Te Araroa … … … £65,000
(b.) The construction of a traffic-bridge over the Waiapu River at Tikiti … … 5,000
(c.) The formation of twenty-two miles of dray-road between the Kopuapounamu Valley and Whangaparaoa … … 5,000

the number of votes recorded for the proposal was 138, and the number of votes recorded against the proposal was nil. I therefore declare that the proposal was carried.

IN pursuance of the power and authority conferred upon me by section 15 of the Land Act, 1908, I, Joseph George Ward, Minister of Lands, do hereby authorize the laying-off of McLean, Chambers, Knox, Campbell, and Gillean Streets, in the Town of Havelock Extension No. 8, Hawke’s Bay Land District, of a width of not less than 66 ft. instead of 99 ft.

Notice to Mariners No. 105 of 1910.

THE following extracts from Notices to Mariners, received from the United States Hydrographic Office at Washington, are published for general information.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—BURRARD INLET.—SECOND NARROWS.—BEACONS ESTABLISHED.—The Canadian Government has given notice that two wooden pile beacons, each consisting of five piles surmounted by a latticework drum, painted white, have been established to mark the edge of the shoal ground at Seymour Creek, Second Narrows, Burrard Inlet. The eastern beacon stands in 3 ft. of water on the edge of the bank, 650 yards 85° from the east shoulder of Seymour Creek. The western beacon stands in 3 ft. of water on the edge of the bank, 550 yards 275° from the west shoulder of Seymour Creek.

Both beacons show 14 ft. at high water.


BAY OF BENGAL.

HUGLI RIVER.—WIRELESS-TELEGRAPH STATION DISCONTINUED.—LONG SAND LIGHT-VESSEL REPLACED BY NEW LIGHT-VESSEL.—The wireless-telegraph station at Saugor Lighthouse, Hugli River, has been discontinued, and wireless communication has been established direct between Calcutta and the pilot-vessel at the Sandheads.

The pilot-vessel, according to a recent survey, is located about 1 mile southward of the position shown on the charts in (approximately) latitude 20° 59′ 30″ N., longitude 88° 11′ 45″ E.

Long Sand Light-vessel has been replaced by a new unwatched light-vessel known as Middleton Light-vessel, exhibiting, 30 ft. above the sea, a flashing white light every 18 seconds—thus, light 7 seconds, eclipsed 11 seconds—visible 10 miles. The vessel is painted red and has no masts.

A bell, rung by the motion of the vessel on the waves, is installed on the new light-vessel.

Approx. position : Lat. 21° 36′ N., long. 88° 1′ 15″ E.

GULF OF MARTABAN.—KRISHNA SHOAL LIGHT-VESSEL.—POSITION.—The surveyor in charge of the Marine Survey of India has given notice that Krishna ShoaI Light-vessel, Gulf of Martaban, is moored in 6 fathoms of water in (approximately) latitude 15° 36′ 23″ N., longitude 95° 37′ 12″ E.

The watch-buoy marking the station is moored in (approximately) latitude 15° 36′ 32″ N., longitude 95° 36′ 56″ E.

CALIFORNIA.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—OAKLAND HARBOUR (TIDAL BASIN).—BUOYS TO BE ESTABLISHED.—About 20th August, 1910, the following buoys will be established in the tidal basin, above the bridges, in San Antonio Creek, San Francisco Bay, California :—

Tidal Basin, West End Buoy, a horizontally striped third-class spar, to mark the western end of the middle ground.

Tidal Basin, East End Buoy, a horizontally striped third-class spar, to mark the eastern end of the middle ground.

POINT REYES LIGHT-STATION.—INTENDED CHANGE IN FOG-SIGNAL.—About 1st September, 1910, the 12-inch steam-whistle at Point Reyes Light-station, sea-coast of California, will be replaced by a first-class compressed-air siren, which will sound 1 blast of 2½ seconds duration every 37½ seconds—thus, blast 2½ seconds, silent interval 35 seconds.

Should the 12-inch steam-whistle become disabled at any time before 1st September, the siren will sound the present characteristic of the fog-signal at this station—thus, blast 5 seconds, silent interval 70 seconds.

Approx. position : Lat. 37° 59′ 39″ N., long. 123° 1′ 21″ W.


INDIAN OCEAN.

REUNION ISLAND.—ST. PAUL BAY.—LIGHT DISCONTINUED.—The French Government has given notice that about 1st June, 1910, the fixed red light exhibited near the landing-place in St. Paul Bay, Réunion Island, South Pacific Ocean, would be permanently discontinued.

Approx. position : Lat. 20° 59′ 45″ S., long. 55° 16′ 35″ E.


AUSTRALIA.

SOUTH COAST.—OLDFIELD RIVER AND DUKE OF ORLEANS BAY.—BREAKERS REPORTED.—Breakers have been reported southward of the Oldfield River, south coast of Australia, in (approximately) latitude 34° 1′ S., longitude 120° 44′ E.

Breakers have been reported in the approach to Duke of Orleans Bay, in (approximately) latitude 33° 57′ S., longitude 122° 41′ E.


SUMATRA.

SUNDA STRAIT.—KRAKATOA ISLAND.—ISLAND AND ROCKS NORTH-WESTWARD DISAPPEARED.—The commander of the Netherlands man-of-war “Siboga” reports that the small island and the rocks above water off the north-western shore of Krakatoa Island, Sunda Strait, are no longer visible.

WEST COAST.—PULO NIAS.—SHOAL TO WESTWARD.—The commander of the German man-of-war “Scharnhorst” reports that a shoal, noticeable by discolouration and surf, has been discovered off the western shore of Pulo Nias, west coast of Sumatra, in (approximately) latitude 1° 11′ 30″ N., longitude 97° 2′ 30″ E.
