Notice to Mariners No. 78 of 1910.

THE following extracts from Notices to Mariners, received from the Board of Trade, London, are published for general information.

INDIAN OCEAN.

Ceylon.

COLOMBO APPROACH.—About 12th April, 1910, Ona Gala ridge buoy, in 6° 59′ N., 79° 50½′ E., at srn. end of ridge, was to be replaced by a red lt.-buoy exh. an occ. white lt., vis. 2 secs., ecl. 2 secs. June.

Bay of Bengal.

MADRAS HARB.—1. New entr.—The old entr. to the harb. has been closed, and a new entr., about 400 ft. wide, has been opened through the nrn. breakwater. A spur breakwater, now known as north arm, has been constr., and extends from the n.-ern. corner of the nrn. breakwater N. 21° E. for about 1,350 ft. 2. Alterations in lts.—The F. red lts. marking the old entr. have been disc., and the breakwaters are now marked by the following lts.: (a) A F. red lt., elev. 35 ft., R. 6 miles, exh. from a cyl. cement column 25 ft. high, on wrn. side of new entr., 5½ cables N. 72° E. from Cornwallis monument (13° 5⅔′ N., 80° 17½′ E.). (b) A F. red lt., similar in all respects to (a), on ern. side of new entr. (c) A F. green lt., elev. 33 ft., R. 4 miles, exh. from a conical cement column 23 ft. high, on outer end of new north arm, 7¾ cables N. 66° E. from Cornwallis monument.

Caution.—Considerable shoaling has taken place srd. of the harb. since the date of the last survey, and the depths shown on the plan cannot therefore be relied on.

Note.—A new edition of Chart No. 575, showing the new entr. and the alterations in lighting, is shortly to be published. June.

IRRAWADDY RIVER APPROACH.—The surveying beacons prev. along the 10-fm. line, between Alguada Lt.-h. (15° 41⅔′ N., 94° 10½′ E.) and Baragua Lt.-v., have been withdrawn. June.

RIVER HUGLI.—THE SANDHEADS.—The surveying buoys emp. moored at the Sandheads in the river between the parallel of the ern. chan. lt.-v. (21° ½′ N., 88° 12¼′ E.) and the parallel of Eagle sand, have been withdrawn. June.

RANGOON RIVER.—Syriam pt. leading lts., F. white, have been moved: (a) Front lt. 1⁷⁄₁₀ cables N. 25° W., and is now elev. 40 ft., in 16° 45¼′ N., 96° 13¼′ E., with the outer end of the Oil pier, N. 14° W., 1¾ cables. (b) Rear lt., elev. 60 ft. is now 1⁷⁄₁₀ cables S. 74° E. from the front lt., and in line with it, S. 74° E., leads over the nrn. end of Hastings shoal. June.

HASTINGS SHOAL.—(a) The Upper Monkey pt. buoy, black, 2⁶⁄₁₀ cables S. 11° E., and Upper Hastings buoy, red, 3⁴⁄₁₀ cables S. 3° E. from Monkey pt. tide gauge (16° 46′ N., 96° 11¾′ E.) have been withdrawn. (b) Lower Hastings red buoy has been replaced by a black lt.-buoy exh. a F. white lt., moored 8½ cables S. 47° E. from Monkey pt. tide gauge, 235 yards S. 20° E. from prev. position. The wrk. buoy, on the nrn. part of Hastings shoal, exhs. a F. green lt. June.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

LANGKAT RIVER ENTR.—The gp. fl. white lt. every 30 secs. (4° 2′ N., 98° 28½′ E.), W. side of river entr., is disc. May. The F. white front leading lt. (4° N., 98° 29½′ E.) on ern. side of entr. to river, is shortly to be altered to a gp. occ. white lt., with a gp. of 3 ecls. every 30 secs.: Lt. 15 secs., ecl. 3 secs., lt. 3 secs., ecl. 3 secs., lt. 3 secs., ecl. 3 secs. June.

CHUPEL ROAD.—(a) A reef, carrying 3 ft., exists 6 cables S. 42° W.; (b) a reef, which dries, 2¾ cables S. 53° W.; and (c) a reef, which dries, 3¼ cables S. 87° W. from the white beacon (8° 22½′ S., 114° 34¼′ E.) June.

SUMBA (SANDALWOOD) ISLAND.—WAINGAPU ROAD.—(a) A reef, carrying 5 fms., exists 11¹⁄₁₀ cables N. 2° W. from the nrn. pyra. on Pasebanju pt. (9° 37¼′ S., 120° 13′ E.). (b) A reef, about 1 cable in extent N.W. and S.E., carrying 1½ fms., exists 11 cables N. 14° W. from the above pyra. June.

CELEBES.—KARANG BANKAULUANG.—A reef, estimated to carry 5 fms., is reported to exist in 5° 59′ S., 118° 26′ E., srd. of Karang Bankauluang, srn. entr. to Makassar Strait. June.

TICKANG BESI ISLS.—1. Moro Maho isl. is reported to be about 5 miles s.-erd. from its present chartered position (6° 7′ S., 124° 37′ E.). A note to the above effect has been chartered. 2. Kaka Reef (srn. end 6° 7′ S., 124° 20′ E.) is reported to extend about 3 miles further to the erd., and a note to this effect has been chartered against it. June.

Notice to Mariners No. 80 of 1910.

DREDGING OFF NEW PLYMOUTH HARBOUR ENTRANCE.

THE New Plymouth Harbour Board has notified that the dredger “Paritutu” will shortly commence work in and about the fairway of the port, and the following signals will be shown as an indication to vessels entering or leaving the port to pass on that side of the dredge on which they are shown:—

Day-time: Two black balls, in a vertical line one over the other.

Night-time: Two red lights, in a vertical line one over the other.

Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Chart No. 2535; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter v, page 163.

Notice fixing Closing-hours of Booksellers’, Stationers’, News-agents’, and Fancy-goods Shops in the Borough of Wanganui under the Shops and Offices Act.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the booksellers’, stationers’, news-agents’, and fancy-goods shops in the Borough of Wanganui, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: Monday, 6.15 p.m.; Tuesday, 6.15 p.m.; Wednesday, 6.15 p.m.; Friday, 6.15 p.m.; Saturday, 9.30 p.m., for all weeks of the year except six days preceding Christmas Day, when the hours shall be 9.15 p.m., except on Christmas Eve, when the hour shall be 11 p.m.: And whereas the Wanganui Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the booksellers’, stationers’, and fancy-goods shops, combined and separately, in the Borough of Wanganui.

Now, therefore, I, John Andrew Millar, Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that, from and after the 1st day of August, 1910, all such shops in the Borough of Wanganui shall be closed in accordance with such requisition.

Notice fixing Closing-hours of Boot and Shoe Shops in the Borough of Palmerston North under the Shops and Offices Act.

WHEREAS a requisition, in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all shops wherein is carried on the trade of a seller of boots and shoes and repairing in the Borough of Palmerston North, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: At 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday; 1 p.m. Wednesday; Saturday at 9 p.m.: And whereas the Palmerston North Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all shops wherein is carried on the trade of a seller of boots and shoes and repairing within the Borough of Palmerston North:

Now, therefore, I, John Andrew Millar, Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 26 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that from and after the 1st day of August, 1910, all such shops in the Borough of Palmerston North shall be closed in accordance with such requisition.
