being ploughable. Most of the section is covered with fern, manuka, tutu, and koromiko, of which a large area was burnt last summer. The soil is of very inferior quality, most of the flats being pumice, on a rhyolite-rock formation. The forest is of small extent, and mostly small timber, comprising totara, matai, rimu, white-pine, hinau, tawhero, tawa, &c., with a fairly dense undergrowth. Well watered.

Opening National Endowment Lands in Wellington Land District for Selection.


PLUNKET, Governor.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by “The Land Act, 1908,” I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby declare that the national endowment lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for selection on renewable lease on Wednesday, the twenty-seventh day of October, one thousand nine hundred and nine, at the rentals mentioned in the said Schedule; and I do also declare that the said lands shall be leased under and subject to the provisions of the said Act.


SCHEDULE.

WELLINGTON LAND DISTRICT.—PATEA COUNTY.—MOMAHAHI SURVEY DISTRICT.

Second-class Land.

Weighted with £150, valuation for improvements.

Comprises rough hilly land intersected by deep gullies. There are good sunny faces and small flats near the road, sufficient for homestead-sites. Access is from Waitotara, which is about twenty miles distant by way of the Waitotara Valley and Mangawhio Roads, which are formed for wheel traffic to the section. The soil is from fair to good, on sandstone and papa. The forest is medium heavy, comprising tawa, rata, hinau, rimu, rewarewa, kahikatea, and birch on the ridges. Watered by small streams. There is a post and telegraph office opposite the land.

The improvements comprise about 145 acres felled and grassed (now grown up in fern, &c.), and a whare in bad repair.

About 30 acres of flat land, the balance being from hilly to rough sheep-country. Access is from Waitotara, which is about twenty-one miles distant, by formed dray-road to within about one mile and a half from the section, the remainder being bridle-track only. Soil is of good quality, on papa and standstone formation. The bush is medium heavy, comprising chiefly tawa, rimu, hinau, kahikatea, tawhero, and birch on the ridges. Well watered by streams.

Comprises easy spurs and flats, covered generally with heavy forest of tawa, hinau, rimu, kahikatea, &c., with heavy undergrowth on spurs and light on flats. Good soil, on a papa formation, but light in valleys; well watered.

Ohura County.—Piopiotea West Survey District.

Eastern end good undulating fern land, the balance being steep spurs with terraces in front, covered with heavy forest of rata, rimu, matai, &c. Fair to good soil, on a papa formation; well watered.

Fairly easy spurs, with some terrace land on Sections 9 and 10. The forest is heavy, and comprises tawa, rata, hinau, rimu, mahoe, &c., with dense undergrowth. Good soil, on a papa formation; well watered.
