RANGE LIGHTS TO BE ESTABLISHED.—DEPTHS.—About 15th May, 1909, range lights will be established to guide vessels across the bar at the mouth of the Columbia River by the North Channel. The range line will pass just southward of the outside bar whistle buoy and the mid-channel buoy, and will serve as a guide not only for vessels crossing the bar by the North Channel, but for all vessels navigating the channel between Clatsop Spit and Sand Island, from the mid-channel buoy to Clatsop Spit buoy No. 8.
The front light will be a fixed white lens-lantern light, exhibited 45 ft. above the water from a pyramidal, white-frame structure, erected on four piles, located in 12 ft. of water about 1,000 ft. eastward of the eastern end of Shand Island, on the following bearings:—
Fort Columbia Wharf, outer end, S. 59° 40′ E.
Desdemona Sands Lighthouse, S. 8° E.
Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, N. 75° 40′ W.
Approx. position: Lat. 46° 15′ 33″ N., long. 123° 57′ 50″ W.
The rear light will be a fixed white lens-lantern light, exhibited 70 ft. above the water from an arm on a white pole, located on the beach about 1½ miles N. 79° 40′ E. from the front light.
DEPTHS.—Soundings recently taken show slightly increased depths in the South Channel, and a corresponding decrease in the North Channel. The latter is now but little used, and it is probable that after the bar is surveyed by the U.S. Engineers, in June, 1909, changes will be made in the entrance and channel buoyage.

Light-vessel No. 93 shows 1 fixed white light, about 50 ft. above the water, from the mainmast, and 1 fixed red light, about 30 ft. above the water, from the foremast, each from three lens lanterns encircling the masthead.
During thick or foggy weather light-vessel No. 93 will sound a 12 in. steam whistle, giving blasts of 2 seconds’ duration, separated alternately by silent intervals of 2 and 24 seconds. Should the steam whistle be disabled, the ship’s bell will be rung by hand.
Light-vessel No. 93 is a flush-deck, schooner-rigged steam vessel, with two masts, no bowsprit, and a black smoke-stack and steam whistle between the masts. The hull is painted yellow, with “Swiftsure” in black letters on each side, and “93” in black on each bow and each quarter. The masts are red, with hoop-iron day-marks at the heads.
