Portion of the Maruia North Block. The land is (except about 120 acres of fern and scrub) timber-clad country of brown-birch, black-birch, scattered rimu, black-pine, white-pine, miro, mountain-totara, and rata, with underscrub of broadleaf, fivefinger, pepper-tree, maple, fuchsia, &c. Formation is limestone, sandstone, and granite rocks. Well watered. Has a northern aspect, and carries good grass when cleared. Well adapted for fruit-growing and pastoral purposes. Sufficient flat for home-stead-site. The town of Murchison is distant in an easterly direction about eight miles from the block along a dray-road. The main coach-road is along the Buller River at the northern boundary of the block. The mail-coach passes twice a week. Sale plan 137.

Portion of the Warwick Block. Situated to the north of and adjoining the Maruia Block (which has been subdivided and selected). Access is by main road from Murchison via Matakikaki, about twenty-one miles. Another means of access in the future will be by road leading from Murchison via Fern Flat, and through the Maruia North and Mid-Maruia Blocks to Frog Flat (in the middle of the Warwick Block), about twenty-three miles. The country comprises flats, undulating terraces, sloping spurs, and hilly country; well watered. The soil is excellent on the flats, and varies from fair to very good on the slopes, but is rather inferior on the high broken country. Formation is granite, sandstone, and conglomerate. Elevation above sea-level varies from 1,100 ft. to 2,970 ft. The land is forest-clad, the timber being red-birch and brown-birch with undergrowth of pepper-tree, broadleaf, black scrub, and fuchsia, and when properly cleared and grassed will be excellent grazing country. Mangles and Blackwater Block.

The area of 725 acres is practically all hilly land, with the exception of a few acres along the main road. The land is covered with forest, chiefly birch, with a mixed undergrowth. Formation is conglomerate to the west and calcareous shale and sandstone to the east. Altitude, 700 ft. to 2,500 ft. Accessible by a good cart-road from Murchison, distant six miles. The area of 1,005 acres is situated in the basin of Hartes Creek, a tributary of the Mangles River, and is all hilly land of fair quality for pastoral purposes, covered with red and brown birch forest and a mixed under-scrub. Altitude, 1,200 ft. to 3,500 ft. Accessible from Murchison by four and a quarter miles of good cart-road and two miles unformed track. Sale plan 147.
Rappahannock Block.

This area is the eastern portion of the Rappahannock Block, and comprises hilly land with small flats along streams; covered with forest consisting principally of brown and red birch with an undergrowth of horopito (pepperwood), kotukutuku (fuchsia), and puka (broadleaf). Formation, conglomerate and sandstone. Access from Murchison —23½ miles of good dray-road, two and a half miles of road in course of construction, and unformed tracks up the branches of Rappahannock River. Three and a half miles to nearest area and five and a half miles to most distant area. Sale plan 133.
Mid-Maruia Block.

This area is the eastern portion of the Mid-Maruia Block, adjoining the Maruia North Block, and extending from the southern boundary of that block, near Pea Soup Creek, to the Shenandoah River, both streams being tributaries of the Maruia River. The land comprises forest-clad hilly country, with some flats and sloping ground. The forest consists chiefly of red and brown birch with a mixed undergrowth. The soil is good on the flats and slopes, and fair to inferior on the spurs. The formation, generally speaking, is sandstone and granite. Altitude ranges from 650 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level. Well watered. The nearest town is Murchison, with which the northern portion of above area is connected by bridle-tracks, which are being greatly improved, and by dray-road; the remainder of the block is to be reached by unformed tracks up branch streams from the bridle-track up Maruia Valley. From the northern boundary of the block to Murchison via Doughboy Creek is a distance of fifteen miles, and via the mouth of the Maruia River and the south bank of the Buller River the distance is about eighteen miles. COLLINGWOOD COUNTY.
Upper Aorere Block.

The greater portion of this block is situated on the left bank of the Aorere River, and extends from about half a mile north of Brown’s River (a tributary of the Aorere River) southerly for about four miles towards the source of the Aorere River. The nearest point of the block is about eight miles and a half from Bainham, of which eight miles is by dray-road and half a mile by a good bridle-track. The bridle-track is continued right through the block and is constructed to the mouth of the Heaphy River. There is a school and post-office at Bainham, which is a small settlement ten miles from the Port of Collingwood by a good coach-road. The land is suitable for pastoral purposes, with small flats along rivers and streams, and homestead-sites on each subdivision. The formation is of a light sandy clay on slate. Timber is chiefly brown-birch and red-birch, with some matai, kahikatea, and pukatea in valleys and on lower slopes, with thick undergrowth of mixed scrub. Altitude above sea-level ranges from 300 ft. on the flats to 2,100 ft. on hills. Sale plan 143.

Opening Land in Nelson Land District for Selection on Renewable Lease.
PLUNKET, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by “The Land Act, 1908,” I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby declare that the lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for selection on renewable lease on Wednesday, the thirtieth day of June, one thousand nine hundred and nine, at the rentals mentioned in the said Schedule; and I do also declare that the said lands shall be leased under and subject to section one hundred and thirty-five of the said Act, as they contain, or are supposed to contain, metal, mineral, or valuable stone.
