preparation, cannot be made and taken within the times mentioned in “The Counties Act, 1908,” and it is expedient to extend the said times respectively:

Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, in exercise and pursuance of the powers conferred upon him by the said “Counties Act, 1908,” and acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion, doth hereby order and declare that the several dates mentioned in the Schedule hereto shall be the respective dates for taking the several steps set out in the said Schedule.

SCHEDULE.

  1. For preparing the defaulters’ list and the rolls for ridings within the County of Waitotara: Until the 22nd day of June, 1909.

  2. Time for which such list and rolls shall be open for inspection: From the 28th day of June, 1909, to the 15th day of July, 1909.

  3. Time for appeals against the said rolls: Until the 2nd day of August, 1909.

  4. Revision Courts may sit for hearing applications with reference to the said rolls, and adjourn: Until the 21st day of August, 1909.

  5. Time when the said rolls, having been duly corrected and signed, shall come into force: On the 1st day of September, 1909.

Approving a Company under Section 22 of “The Administration Act, 1908.”

At the Government House, at Wellington, this tenth day of May, 1909.

WHEREAS it is provided by section twenty-two of “The Administration Act, 1908,” that the security of any incorporated company or guarantee society approved by the Governor in Council may be accepted by the Court as the security required to be given by any administrator or other person appointed to administer an estate under the above-mentioned Act:

Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the before-recited power and authority, and acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the Dominion, doth hereby approve for the purpose above mentioned of the following incorporated company, namely:—

Classification Regulations.—Exemption from Senior Examination.

At the Government House, at Wellington, this tenth day of May, 1909.

WHEREAS by Order in Council dated the second day of May, one thousand nine hundred and eight, and published in the New Zealand Gazette of the fourteenth day of May, one thousand nine hundred and eight, regulations were made, under the authority of “The Electric Lines Act, 1884,” “The Post and Telegraph Classification and Regulation Act, 1890,” “The Post and Telegraph Classification and Regulation Act Amendment Act, 1891,” “The Post and Telegraph Department Act, 1894,” “The Post Office Act, 1900,” “The Post and Telegraph Department Act, 1902,” “The Post Office Act Amendment Act, 1906,” and “The Post and Telegraph Classification Act, 1907,” providing, inter alia, for exemption from the senior examination in special cases: And whereas it is expedient to amend such regulations in the manner hereinafter set forth:

Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the authority conferred upon him by “The Post and Telegraph Act, 1908,” and acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion, doth hereby revoke Regulation 37 in the Schedule to the hereinbefore-mentioned Order in Council, and in lieu thereof doth make the regulation set forth in the Schedule hereto, and doth order that such regulation shall be read as part of the regulations hereinbefore mentioned, and shall have effect on and after the date of publication thereof in the New Zealand Gazette.

SCHEDULE.

  1. No person who has held office in the Department or in any other branch of the Civil Service of New Zealand before the passing of “The Post and Telegraph Classification and Regulation Act, 1890,” and no officer employed in the Department who is skilled in electricity or telegraphy, or in literature, science, or art, to a degree to satisfy the Minister of his fitness to be exempted from the senior examination prescribed by clause 15 hereof, shall be required to pass any further examination (other than those required by clauses 50 and 51 or that required by clause 52 hereof) for promotion to any class higher than the Sixth Class. The passing with 75 per cent. of marks of an examination to be called the Senior Technical Examination, being an examination in magnetism and electricity (the whole subjects) as applied to telegraphy, shall be deemed to satisfy the Minister of fitness to be exempted from further examination under this regulation.

Civil Service Junior Examination.—Amendment of Regulations.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.

At the Government House, at Wellington, this tenth day of May, 1909.

Present:

His Excellency the Governor in Council.

IN exercise and pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “The Civil Service Act, 1908,” and of all other powers and authorities enabling him in this behalf, the Governor, with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the Dominion, doth hereby, in respect of the competitive examination referred to in the said Act, amend the regulations relating thereto as set forth in the Schedule attached.

SCHEDULE.

THE regulations made by Orders in Council of the 27th day of February, 1906, and the 29th day of June, 1908, respecting the competitive examination referred to in “The Civil Service Act, 1908,” are hereby amended—(i) in clause 2, by striking out the words “30th day of September” wherever they occur, and inserting in lieu thereof the words “15th day of September,” and by striking out the words “15th day of October,” and inserting in lieu thereof the words “22nd day of September”; and (ii) in clause 13, subject No. 14, Elementary Mathematics, among the theorems relating to Areas (Section B, Theoretical Geometry), after the words “Equal triangles on the same or equal bases are of the same altitude,” by inserting the words “The Proposition of Pythagoras—viz., the square on the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides; and conversely.”
