CHINA SEA, ETC.

WUSUNG RIVER.—Dredging is in progress in Junk Chan.,
srd. of Gough Isl., and the dredgers’ chains extend across the
chan. The dredged chan. is 450 ft. wide, and when com-
pleted is to carry 14 ft. A mark-boat, red, exh. a F. white
lt., is est. about 3¾ cables S. 52° E., and a mark-boat, black,
about 8 cables S. 35° E., respectively from the S.E. pt. of
Gough Isl. (31° 20½′ N., 121° 32¾′ E.). Vessels bound to
Shanghai by the Ship Chan. nrd. of Gough Isl. must pass
between these mark-boats, and should give the red one a
berth of not less than 50 yds. Nov.

Centaur lower buoy, in Confucius Chan., has been moved
7 cables N. 43° W., and now lies 3 miles S. 87° E. from Fork
Tree beacon (31° 41¾′ N., 121° 6¼′ E.); Centaur upper buoy
has been moved 2 miles N. 41° W., its colour altered from
black to red, and now lies 2⁴⁄₁₀ miles N. 25° E. from Fork
Tree beacon; and Actæon Shoal upper buoy has been moved
2³⁄₁₀ miles N. 55° W., and now lies 4⁹⁄₁₀ miles N. 24° W. from
Fork Tree beacon. North Tree rks. buoy, black, conical, in
31° 58³⁄₄′ N., 120° 49¼′ E., in Langshan Crossing, has been
withdrawn. Nov.

AUSTRALIA.

South Coast.

STREAKY BAY.—The red buoy prev. marking the one-fm.
patch, on the S. side of S. chan., has been withdrawn, and a
pile beacon surm. by a red circular head is est. in 6 ft., in
32° 42¼′ S., 134° 10¾′ E., on the edge of the bank, about
100 ft. S. of the prev. position of the buoy. Nov.

VENUS BAY.—The main chan. across the bay to Port
Kenny is marked by 12 beacons—6 red with circular heads,
on the starb. hand entering, and 6 black with diamond heads,
on the port hand. The chan. marked carries 7 ft., except
close up to Port Kenny, where there is a sandy bar, carrying
5 ft. Position No. 1 black beacon, 33° 13¼′ S., 134° 40′ E. The
sand-banks have greatly altered since the survey 1875, and
may be subject to alteration in the future. Nov.

Spencer Gulf.

The following information has been received: 1. A shoal,
carrying 4½ fms., exists in 33° 37¾′ S., 137° 37½′ E., erd. of
Middle Bank. The chan. erd. of Middle Bank does not
appear to be safe for vessels of heavy draught. 2. Musgrave
Bank, in 33° 15′ S., 137° 40′ E., wrd. of Jarrold Pt., was
found to exist in its charted position, and soundings were
taken over it by H.M.S. “Psyche”; the least depth ob-
tained was 24 ft., but it has not been thoroughly exam.
3. The tide-gauge in 33° 4′ S., 137° 58¼′ E., erd. of Cockle
Spit, Germein Bay, is dismantled, the face of the gauge is no
longer lighted, the piles and platform only remain. 4. Lowly
Pt. lt. (33° 0′ S., 137° 47¼′ E.) has been increased 21 ft. in
height, and is now elev. 78 ft., R. 14 miles. 5. Two Hum-
mock Spit buoy has been moved about 1 cable S.-erd., and
now lies in 32° 46¼′ S., 137° 49½′ E., 11¾ cables S. 26° E. from
Two Hummock Pt. beacon. 6. West Sands buoy has been
replaced by a black beacon surm. by a diamond, in 32° 41′ S.,
137° 46¼′ E., on N.-ern. edge of the sand. 7. A tide-gauge,
showing the least depth in the chan. to Port Augusta, has
been attached to the black beacon in 32° 35′ S., 137° 46′ E.,
on the wrn. side of Snapper Reach. Nov.

Gulf of St. Vincent.

The following alterations have been made at the entrance
to Port Adelaide River: The red lt.-buoy, exh. an occ. white
lt., moved 300 yds. N. 73° W., and moored in 25 ft., with the
F. white lt. (45 ft.) in 34° 48¼′ S., 138° 28′ E., N. 79° E.,
4⁴⁄₁₀ cables. The 2 red and 1 black temp. buoys withdrawn.
The temp. black buoy on the N. bank retained for the present.
Vessels bound inward should, before passing the lt.-buoy
(occ. lt.), bring the beacons or lts. of No. 0 lead in line,
N. 74° E., and keep them in line until No. 1 lead comes on,
then proceed as prev. directed. Nov.

CHILE.

MAGELLAN STRAIT.—PUNTA ARENAS.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.
—The Chilean Government has given notice that a red
conical buoy has been moored in about 42½ ft. of water near
the edge of the shoal southward of the mouth of the Minas
River, Punta Arenas, Magellan Strait, on the following
bearings:—
Punta Arenas (Sandy Point) beacon, N. 28° E.
Punta Arenas Lighthouse, S. 83° W., distant 1,700 yards.
Old mole, shore end, west.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

VANCOUVER ISLAND.—SOUTH-WEST COAST.—HALIBUT
CHANNEL.—LOOKOUT ISLAND.—NEW GAS-LIGHTED BEACON
ERECTED.—The Canadian Government has given notice that
the wooden light-tower on the eastern end of Lookout Island,
Halibut Channel, west coast of Vancouver Island, has been
replaced by a gas-lighted beacon consisting of a steel cylin-
drical tank on a steel framework and surmounted by a
pyramidal steel frame supporting the lantern, the whole
painted white.

The light is an unwatched fixed white acetylene-gas light
elevated 53 ft. above high water and visible 12 miles to the
southward and eastward.

Approx. position: Lat. 49° 59′ 45″ N., long. 127° 27′ 25″
W.

KYUQUOT SOUND.—HALIBUT CHANNEL.—TABLE ISLAND.—
ROCK NORTH-WESTWARD.—The Canadian Government has
given notice that Captain Hackett, of the C.G.S. “Quadra,”
reports the existence of a boulder-shaped rock, with a depth
of 4 fathoms over it, on which the sea breaks in moderate
weather, and marked by kelp, in Halibut Channel, south-
west coast of Vancouver Island, ½ mile north-westward of
Trap Bluff, Table Island.

The following sextant angles fix the position of the
rock:—

Lookout Island gas beacon . . 0° 00′
South rock (awash at high water) middle 47° 00′
Rock (15 ft.) middle . . 81° 00′
Granite Island, west tangent . . 50° 50′

As the sea breaks on this rock in moderate weather there
may be depths of less than 4 fathoms on it.

Approximate position on H.O. Chart No. 1427: Lat. 50°
00′ 42″ N., long. 127° 26′ 33″ W.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—GABRIOLA REEFS.—ROCK REPORTED
EAST-NORTH-EASTWARD.—The Canadian Government has
given notice that a rock is reported to exist in the track of
shipping 1¾ miles N. 70° E. from Gabriola Reefs beacon,
Strait of Georgia.

The rock was said to have been discovered at an extremely
low tide when it was slightly marked by kelp and had less
than 12 ft. of water over it.

Approximate position on H.O. Chart No. 1815: Lat. 49°
10′ 30″ N., long. 123° 35′ 19″ W.

CALIFORNIA.

ST. GEORGE REEF LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL.—CAU-
TION.—Owing to scarcity of water at the St. George Reef
Light-station, located on North-west Seal Rock, St. George
Reef, sea-coast of California, it may become necessary at any
time to discontinue entirely the operation of the fog-signal at
this station.

Approx. position: Lat. 41° 50′ 14″ N., long. 124° 22′ 29″
W.

OREGON.

COOS BAY ENTRANCE.—GUANO ROCK.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.
—On 16th September, 1908, Guano Rock buoy, a red second-
class nun marked 0 G.R., was established in 30 ft. of water
about 300 ft. N. 1° 30′ W. from Guano Rock, Coos Bay en-
trance, Oregon, on the following bearings:—

Fossil Point, N. 76° E.
Coos Head, left tangent, S. 31° E.
Cape Arago Lighthouse, S. 70° W.

This buoy will later be marked 2 G.R.

WASHINGTON.

GEORGIA STRAIT.—PATOS ISLAND LIGHT-STATION.—CHANGE
IN LIGHT.—About 21st November, 1908, a fourth-order
flashing white light, showing 1 flash every 5 seconds, will be
established on Alden Point, north-western extremity of
Patos Island, southern end of Georgia Strait, and the present
fixed red lens-lantern light will be discontinued.

The new light will be exhibited 50 ft. above the water
from a white, square, frame tower, surmounted by a black
lantern, rising from the roof of the fog-signal building, and
should be visible 12½ miles in clear weather.

Approx. position: Lat. 48° 47′ 21″ N., long. 122° 58′ 13″ W.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

NEW HEBRIDES.—EFATE (SANDWICH) ISLAND.—MELI BAY.
—FILA HARBOUR RANGE LIGHT STRUCTURES.—ANCHORAGE.—
The French Government has given notice that the range
light structures in Fila Harbour, Efate Island, New He-
brides, each consist of a masonry block surmounted by two
