pillars carrying a day-mark of an irregular hexagonal form with two horizontal sides, elevated 18 ft. above the ground.

Anchorage may be obtained in the bay of a depth of 11 fathoms at the right of or on the entrance range about 440 yards from the wharf by keeping the northern summit of Mount Fila in line with the western extremity of Iririki Islet.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

HAWAII.—HILO BAY.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.—About 22nd October, 1908, a second-class spar buoy, painted red and numbered 2, will be established in about 19 ft. of water to mark a rock on the western side of Cocoanut Island, Hilo Bay, Hawaii, on the following bearings:—

Blonde Reef, southern end buoy No. 5, N. 5° W., distant 5/12 mile.

Cocoanut Point light, S. 79° 19′ W., distant 7/8 mile.

On the same date Cocoanut Island Reef buoy No. 2, a second-class nun, moored on the northern end of the reef, will be renumbered 4.

BRAZIL.

RIO DE JANEIRO HARBOUR.—UBUS SHOAL LIGHT.—POSITION.—CHARACTERISTIC CHANGED.—The Brazilian Government has given notice that the light on Ubus Shoal, Rio de Janeiro Harbour, is located on Cruz das Almas, the north-eastern of the Passagem Rocks, and not on the southern end of Ubus Shoal, as indicated on the charts.

Also that the light has been replaced by an unwatched flashing green light, exhibited 22 ft. above the sea from a new structure.

The light is visible 6 miles.

Approx. position: Lat. 22° 50′ 30″ S., long. 43° 10′ 00″ W.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

VANCOUVER ISLAND.—SOUTH-WEST COAST.—ESTEVAN POINT.—CHANGE IN CHARACTERISTIC OF FOG-SIGNAL.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 34 (1457) of 1908, the Canadian Government has given further notice that hereafter the compressed-air diaphone at Estevan Point (Hole-in-the-wall), south-west coast of Vancouver Island, will sound, during thick or foggy weather, blasts of 5 seconds’ duration, separated by silent intervals of 55 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 49° 22′ 05″ N., long. 126° 32′ 00″ W.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

SAMOA ISLANDS.—TUTUILA ISLAND.—STEPS POINT.—RANGE LIGHTS ESTABLISHED.—Information has been received that range lights have been established on Steps Point, southern side of Tutuila Island, Samoa Islands.

The front light is a fixed white lens-lantern light exhibited 66 ft. above the sea from a white iron pillar 7 ft. in height.

Approximate position on H.O. Chart No. 90: Lat. 14° 23′ 25″ S., long. 170° 47′ 25″ W.

The rear light is a fixed white lens-lantern light exhibited 76 ft. above the sea from a white iron pillar 24 ft. in height, located 283 ft. S. 70° E. from the front light.

The lights are visible 10 miles in clear weather over an arc of 270° from S. 65° W. to S. 25° E. and in line lead about 1 mile southward of West Cape and also well clear of the rocks off Leone Point.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

HAWAII.—KA LAE LIGHT-STATION.—COLOUR OF KEEPER’S DWELLING CHANGED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 8 (324) of 1908, further notice is given that the keeper’s dwelling at Ka Lae Light-station, southern point of the Island of Hawaii, is painted light grey with a green roof.

Approx. position: Lat. 18° 56′ 35″ N., long. 155° 41′ 03″ W.

CALIFORNIA.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY APPROACH.—SHOAL-SOUNDING.—Captain Thomas Dowdell, of the steamer “Alameda,” reports through the Branch Hydrographic Office at San Francisco that at 6.50 a.m. on 3rd November, 1908, while approaching the coast in a fog, he obtained a cast of the lead in 12 fathoms, dark-grey sand, 6½ miles S. 48° 35′ E. from Farallon Lighthouse. This position was obtained by working back from 8.08 a.m. when the San Francisco light-vessel bore N. 73° 45′ E., distant 4 miles.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 37′ 30″ N., long. 122° 53′ 45″ W.

TRINIDAD HEAD LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED.—About 20th December, 1908, the 4,000-pound fog-bell at Trinidad Head Light-station, sea-coast of California, will be discontinued for about two months while necessary repairs are being made.

Approx. position: Lat. 41° 03′ 08″ N., long. 124° 09′ 02″ W.

SUMATRA.

SUNDA STRAIT.—LAGUNDI ISLAND.—NON-EXISTENCE OF ROCK TO SOUTHWARD.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 46 (2081) of 1908, the Netherlands Government has given further notice that the rock, drying at low water, reported southward of Lagundi Island, Sunda Strait, in (approximately) latitude 5° 53′ 30″ S., longitude 105° 19′ 12″ E., does not exist.

CHINA.

EAST COAST.—YANGTZE RIVER ENTRANCE.—YANGTZE CAPE BELL BUOY CHANGED IN POSITION AND COLOUR.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 28 (1171) of 1908, the Chinese Government has given further notice that the bell buoy formerly moored off Yangtze Cape, Yangtze River entrance, has been moved to the south-westward and is now moored close to the 5-fathom curve at the entrance to Hangchow Bay, about 14·4 miles N. 79° W. from Gutzlaff Lighthouse.

The colour of the buoy has been changed to red.

Approximate position on B.A. Chart No. 1124: Lat. 30° 51′ 23″ N., long. 121° 53′ 55″ E.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

HAWAII.—HILO BAY.—CHANGE IN COLOUR AND NUMBER OF BUOYS.—On the 6th November, 1908, the following changes were made in the colour and number of the buoys in Hilo Bay, Hawaii:—

Blonde Reef southern end buoy No. 5, a black second-class can, was renumbered 1.

Cocoanut Island Reef buoy No. 2, a red second-class spar, recently established to mark a rock westward of Cocoanut Island, was painted black and renumbered 5.

Cocoanut Island Reef buoy No. 2, a red second-class nun, the number of which was recently changed to 4, was renumbered 2.

CEYLON.

GALLE HARBOUR APPROACH.—WHALE ROCK.—BUOY DISCONTINUED.—The Government of Bengal has given notice that the buoy marking Whale Rock, Galle Harbour approach, south coast of Ceylon, has been permanently discontinued.

Approx. position: Lat. 6° 01′ 30″ N., long. 80° 10′ 00″ E.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

PHŒNIX GROUP.—BIRNIE, ENDERBURY, AND HULL ISLANDS.—HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION.—Lieutenant Commander W. K. Gise, commanding the U.S.S. “Annapolis,” under date of 19th September, 1908, gives the following information concerning islands in the Phœnix Group, South Pacific Ocean:—

Birnie Island.—A conical beacon 30 ft. high of corrugated sheet iron, surmounted by a flagstaff 15 ft. high, has been erected on the eastern point of the island.

Enderbury Island.—The wreck shown on Wreck Point has disappeared, and the buoy and wharf shown on the western side of the island no longer exist.

Hull Island.—A flagstaff and cairn of stones mark the location of the landing-place and the house of refuge about the middle of the north-western side of the island, in (approximately) latitude 4° 29′ S., longitude 172° 12′ W.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

HAWAII.—KAILUA BAY.—ESTABLISHMENT OF LIGHT POSTPONED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 44 (1987) of 1908, further notice is given that the establishment of the proposed light on Kukailimoku Point, about ½ mile westward of Kaliliki Point, northern side of the entrance to Kailua Bay, west coast of the Island of Hawaii, has been postponed until further notice.

Approx. position: Lat. 19° 38′ 40″ N., long. 156° 00′ 20″ W.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

HAWAII.—HILO BAY.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 45 (2042) of 1908, further notice is given that on 24th October, 1908, a second-class spar buoy, painted red and numbered 2, was established in about 26 ft. of water to mark a rock on the western side of Cocoanut Island, Hilo Bay, Hawaii, on the following bearings:

Blonde Reef southern end buoy No. 5, N. 5° W., distant 5/12 mile.

Cocoanut Point light S. 79° 19′ W., distant 7/8 mile.

On 26th October, Cocoanut Island Reef buoy No. 2, a second-class nun, moored on the northern end of the reef, was renumbered 4.
