of New Zealand, having received the report of the
Under-Secretary in this behalf, as provided in section
one hundred and fifty-four of the said Act, do hereby declare
that the land described in the Schedule hereto shall be
open for sale or selection on Wednesday, the second day
of June, one thousand nine hundred and nine; and also
that the land mentioned in the said Schedule may, at
the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be
selected for occupation with right of purchase, or on renew-
able lease; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the
said land shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in
the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said land
shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the
provisions of “The Land Act, 1908.”

Situated on the south side of the Rogerson River, about
two miles westward from Hanmer Springs Township. The
northern part of the section consists of pastoral downs, of
which the portion fronting the Rogerson River is covered
with stunted manuka, gorse, briar, and broom. The southern
part of the section consists partly of flax swamp, and partly
of light, shingly land, with some stunted manuka. There is
fair tussock pasture on the open portions of the section.
The altitude is about 1,500 ft. above sea-level. A reserve
20 links wide, with all necessary rights of access thereto, is
reserved to cover the pipe-line of the Hanmer water-supply.

Opening Settlement Land in Canterbury Land District for
Selection.
PLUNKET, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities
conferred upon me by “The Land Act, 1908,” and
“The Land for Settlements Act, 1908,” I, William Lee,
Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Dominion of New
Zealand, do hereby declare that the settlement land de-
scribed in the Schedule hereto shall be open for selection
on renewable lease on Wednesday, the second day of June,
one thousand nine hundred and nine, at the rental men-
tioned in the said Schedule; and I do also declare that the
said land shall be leased under and subject to the provisions
of the said Acts.

Situated in the central part of the Culverden Settlement,
about one mile and three-quarters distant from the Culver-
den Township and railway-station by the main Culverden-
Waiau coach-road. The whole of the land has been culti-
vated, and the bulk of it is in grass. There are 378 acres of
flat land, varying from light and stony to fair soil, and
180 acres of good agricultural undulating downs. Watered
by water-races and streams. Altitude, between 647 ft. and
850 ft. above sea-level.
The improvements effected by the outgoing tenant com-
prise a two-roomed cottage, with brick chimney, verandah,
water-tank, and stand; also 27 chains of boundary-fence
adjoining Lot 22, and about 42 chains of internal and
garden fence: total value, £142 9s., which sum must be
paid by the incoming tenant before being admitted to pos-
session of the land, together with the value of about 34 acres
of turnips, which will be valued upon their condition as at
the date of disposal. The remainder of the fencing on the
section, which is valued at £68 10s. 7d., is included in the
capital value of the land.

Opening National Endowment Lands in Nelson Land
District for Selection.
PLUNKET, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities
conferred upon me by “The Land Act, 1908,” I,
William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Dominion
of New Zealand, do hereby declare that the national endow-
ment lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open
for selection on renewable lease on Wednesday, the twenty-
sixth day of May, one thousand nine hundred and nine, at
the rentals mentioned in the said Schedule; and I do also
declare that the said lands shall be leased under and subject
to the provisions of the said Act.

LOCALITY AND DESCRIPTION.
The southern portion of this block is situated between the
Lee and Wairoa Rivers, and is approached from Bright-
water Railway-station by two routes—one proceeding via
Lee River, a distance of about ten miles, five miles and a
quarter of which is good cart-road, two miles formed bridle-
track, and two miles and three-quarters unformed track;
the other to the area fronting the left-hand branch of the
Wairoa River, distant from Brightwater Railway-station
twelve miles and a half, ten miles of which is good cart-
road, two miles and a quarter of formed and a quarter-mile
of unformed track.
The northern part of the block is situated at the head-
waters of Lucy and Waterfall Creeks, and is distant nine
miles and a half from Brightwater Railway-station, five
miles and a quarter of the route being the cart-road men-
tioned above, one mile and three-quarters of formed track,
and two miles and a half of unformed track, up Lee River
and Lucy Creek.
The whole block is hilly, parts being rough and rocky, but,
generally speaking, is good sheep-country when cleared and
grassed. It is well watered, and forest-clad, the principal
timbers being red and brown birch, with a little scattered
rimu, and mixed undergrowth. The formation is slate.
Altitude varies from 1,000 ft. to 3,600 ft. above the sea.
There are some narrow flats along the Wairoa and Lee
Rivers. At Brightwater, twelve miles from Nelson by rail,
there are schools, stores, hotel, &c.
