Notice to Mariners No. 10 of 1909.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Hydrographic Office, Washington, D.C., United States of America, are published for general information.

WASHINGTON.

PUGET SOUND.—CURRENT SURVEY VESSELS.—CAUTION.—During the winter months certain vessels of the Coast and Geodetic Survey will be anchored in the fairway of Puget Sound engaged in investigating the currents off Liplip Point, southern end of Marrowstone Island, and off West Point.

While employed on this work the vessels will display the day and night signals and sound the fog-alarm prescribed for cable-ships in the United States Navigation Laws, Part XXXIV, Articles 4 (b) and 15 (e).

Masters of vessels navigating these waters are requested to exercise extra precaution, especially during thick weather, to keep clear of these vessels.

GEORGIA STRAIT.—PATOS ISLAND LIGHT-STATION.—LIGHT CHANGED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 45 of 1908, further notice is given that on 21st November, 1908, a fourth-order flashing white light, showing 1 flash every 5 seconds, was established on Alden Point, north-western extremity of Patos Island, southern end of Georgia Strait, and the old fixed red lens-lantern light was discontinued.

The new light is exhibited 50 ft. above the water from a white, square, frame tower, surmounted by a black lantern, rising from the roof of the fog-signal building, and should be visible 12½ miles in clear weather.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

VANCOUVER ISLAND.—TRIAL ISLAND.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—PROVISIONAL LIGHT WITHDRAWN.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 51 of 1906, the Canadian Government has given further notice that a fourth-order flashing white light, showing 1 group of 2 short flashes in quick succession every 10 seconds, has been established in the lighthouse on Trial Island, Vancouver Island, and the provisional seventh-order fixed white light exhibited from the tower has been withdrawn.

The lighthouse is surmounted by a circular metal lantern painted red.

VANCOUVER ISLAND.—EAST COAST.—NANAIMO HARBOUR.—GALLOWS POINT BEACON LIGHT.—CHANGE IN COLOUR.—The Canadian Government has given notice that about 1st January, 1909, the light shown from Gallows Point beacon, southern side of the entrance to Nanaimo Harbour, east coast of Vancouver Island, will be changed from intermittent red to intermittent white.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—FRASER RIVER ENTRANCE.—GAS-BUOY CHANGED.—The Canadian Government has given notice that the combined gas, whistle, and bell buoy moored off the extreme western shoulder of Roberts Bank, Fraser River mouth, British Columbia, has been replaced by a combined gas and whistle buoy moored in the same position. The buoy consists of a cylindrical steel body, painted red, surmounted by a red pyramidal steel frame supporting the whistle and lantern.

The light shown is intermittent white.

The illuminant is acetylene gas generated automatically. The whistle is sounded by the motion of the buoy on the waves.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—BURRARD INLET.—FIRST NARROWS.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—The Canadian Government has given notice that an unwatched intermittent white light, elevated 25 ft. above high water and visible 10 miles from all points of approach, has been established on the northern shore of the western entrance of the First Narrows, Burrard Inlet, British Columbia.

The light is exhibited from a beacon consisting of a cylindrical steel tank standing on a steel framework and surmounted by a pyramidal steel frame supporting the lantern, the whole painted black, erected on a wooden-pile foundation.

Notice to Mariners No. 11 of 1909.

LIGHT ESTABLISHED ON ANGLEM POINT, PATERSON INLET, STEWART ISLAND.

Wellington, N.Z., 8th February, 1909.

NOTICE is hereby given that on and after the night of Monday, the 8th March, 1909, a sixth-order port light will be exhibited on Anglem Point, Paterson Inlet, Stewart Island. The light is situated on the eastern extreme of the small bay south of Anglem Point, locally known as Pukuhaki Point. The height of light is about 80 ft. above high water, and will be visible from seaward over an arc of 205 degrees (except where obscured by Bench Island) between the bearings of N. 26° W. and S. 51° E. (magnetic). The light should be visible for a distance of about eight miles. The sunken rock known as Anglem Rock, or Kaiaho, lies a short distance off shore. It is a dangerous rock, which will be clearly marked by the light.

Notice of Intention to take Land in the Borough of Wanganui for a Post-office.

NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the provisions of “ The Public Works Act, 1908,” to execute a certain public work, to wit, the construction of an extension of the post-office in the Borough of Wanganui, and for the purposes of such public work the land described in the Schedule hereto is required to be taken. And notice is hereby further given that the plan of the land so required to be taken is deposited in the Post-office at Wanganui, and is there open for inspection; and that all persons affected by the execution of the said public work or by the taking of the said land should, if they have any well-grounded objections to the execution of the said public work or to the taking of such land, set forth the same in writing, and send such writing, within forty days from the first publication of this notice, to the Minister of Public Works, Wellington.
