BOROUGH OF PALMERSTON.

Result of Poll.

In the matter of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1908,” and “The Local Bodies’ Loans Amendment Act, 1908.” I HEREBY give notice that on the 24th December, 1908, a proposal was submitted by the Palmerston Borough for raising a special loan of £4,000, at 3½ per cent., for a gravitation scheme to bring water in from the Blue Mountain to Palmerston, as recommended by R. S. Allan, Esq., C.E.; and that the number of votes recorded respectively for and against the proposal was as follows: For the proposal, 107 votes; against, 12 votes; informal, nil.

And I declare the said proposal to be carried.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA.—NORTH-WEST COAST.

It is hereby notified that an uncharted patch of rocks awash at low water, spring tides, has been reported to exist in lat. 16.55 south, long. 119.19 east (position approximate).

Charts affected: No. 1048, Buccaneer Archipelago to Bedout Island; No. 475, North-west Coast of Australia.

GULF ST. VINCENT.—PORT ADELAIDE RIVER.—LUFF POINT.

Masters of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby informed that dredgers are now working near Luff Point, and special care should be exercised whilst passing them.

At night the dredgers will be moored on the opposite or western side of the river, showing the usual lights.

This affects Admiralty Charts Nos. 1750, 1752, and 2389B.

AFRICA.

East Coast.

DELAGOA BAY.—MAGNETIC VARIATION.—As the result of recent magnetic obsers., the following amendments should be made to the chart of Delagoa Bay :—(1.) Alter amount of annual change of variation from 5′ decreasing to 10′ decreasing. (2.) Cancel cautionary note as to local deviation, and substitute: The variation of the compass over the area of this chart differs considerably from the normal value. The following values for 1907 afford an approx. guide for nav.: In approaching the bay, when in more than 15 fms., 19° 30′ W. In the bay, when in less than 15 fms., 18° 20′ W. wrd. of Rueben Pt. (25° 58⅜′ S., 32° 36′ E.), approx. 21° 0′ W. On shore at Rueben Pt., 21° 40′ W. Dec.

A black cyl. buoy with square top-mark is moored in 4½ fms., 16½ cables S. 53° E. from Shefina Grande beacon (25° 55⅜′ S., 32° 41¼′ E.), Timpson Pt., in the approach to Lorenzo Marques. A red conical buoy, surm. by a triangle, is moored in 5 fms., 10½ cables S. 14° W. from Shefina Grande beacon. Dec.

MAINTERANO APPROACH.—A dangerous shoal, carrying 1½ fms., exists in 18° 14½′ S., 43° 51½′ E., with the summit of Nosi Mavoni S. 70° W. 6⅜ miles, and the centre of Bayfield Sand N. 26° W. Dec.


EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

SUNDA STRAIT.—The rk. reported to exist in 5° 53½′ S., 105° 19¼′ E., S.-erd. of Lagundi Isl., has been searched for unsucc., and removed from the chart. Dec.

SINGAPORE MAIN STRAIT.—A survey now in progress in the ern. part of the strait has revealed the following information with regard to shoals :—(1.) A shoal, carrying 2¾ fms., with 6 to 8 fms. around, exists in 1° 21¼′ N., 104° 18¾′ E., S. of Stork Reef, with Whale Rk. N. 5° E. 1⅖ miles, and Horsburgh Lt.-h. S. 78° E. (2.) A depth of 9 fms., with 9¼ to 14 fms. around within a radius of 3 cables, exists in 1° 18¼′ N., 104° 19¼′ E., on the shoal, with Horsburgh Lt.-h. N. 70° E. 5½ miles, and Whale Rk. N. 5° W. (3.) A pinnacle rk., carrying 11 ft., steep on its ern. side, and less than 10 fms. for 100 yds. from its wrn. side, exists in 1° 16¼′ N., 104° 22′ E., on Carter Shoal, about 2½ cables N.-erd. from the present charted position, with Horsburgh Lt.-h. N. 32° E. 4⅜ miles, and Bintang Little Hill S. 30° E. Caution.—Vessels entering or leaving the strait by the Middle Chan. are recommended to pass at least 2 miles S.E. of Peak Rk., as the btm. within this limit is rocky and very uneven. Dec.


PACIFIC OCEAN.

NAMONUITO GROUP.—ULUL ISL.—Ulul Isl., charted in 8° 30½′ N., 149° 47′ E., is reported to be about 6 miles further W.—viz., in 149° 41′ E. Dec.


Hawaiian (Sandwich) Islands.

HAWAII.—HILO BAY.—About 20th Oct., 1908, a red spar buoy, marked “2,” was to be est. in 19 ft. to mark a rk. on the wrn. side of Cocoanut Isl., with No. 5 buoy, Blonde Reef, N. 14° W. 4⁶⁄₁₀ cables, and Cocoanut Pt. lt. (19° 46′ N., 155° 6′ W.) S. 70° W. On the same date No. 2 buoy, red, conical, moored off the nrn. end of Cocoanut Isl., was to be renumbered “4.” Dec.

HAWAII.—KAILUA BAY.—The est. of the F. red lt., elev. 60 ft., to be exh. from a grey mast on a small white house with red roof, in 19° 38¼′ N., 156° 0′ W., about 1¼ cables S. 73° E. from grave on Kukailimoku Pt., wrn. side of the entr. to the bay, has been postponed until further notice. Dec.


Phoenix Group.

PHŒNIX ISL.—The beacon prev. in 3° 43′ S., 170° 42½′ W., on the S.-wrn. side of the isl., no longer exists. There are no trees on the isl., or any distinctive elev., and it would therefore be quite invis. on a dark night, and difficult of detection on a cloudy day. Dec.


CHINA SEA, ETC.

HANGCHOW BAY.—The bell buoy in 30° 55′ N., 122° 2′ E., off Yangtse Cape, has been altered in colour to red, moved to mark the entr. to the bay, and now lies in 30° 51½′ N., 121° 54′ E., close to the 5-fm. line S.-erd. of Yangtse Cape, with Gutzlaff Lt.-h. S. 76° E. 14⅕ miles. Dec.

WUSUNG RIVER.—Dredging is in progress in Junk Chan., srd. of Gough Isl., and the dredgers’ chains extend across the chan., which is closed until further notice. The dredged chan. is 450 ft. wide, and when completed is to carry 14 ft. A mark-boat, red, exh. a F. white lt., is est. about 3¾ cables S. 52° E., and a mark-boat, black, about 8 cables S. 35° E., respectively, from the S.E. pt. of Gough Isl. (31° 20¼′ N., 121° 32¾′ E.). Vessels bound to Shanghai by the Ship Chan., nrd. of Gough Isl., must pass between these mark-boats, and should give the red one a berth of not less than 50 yds. Dec.
