No. 1 Company, New Zealand Engineer Volunteers (Canterbury Engineer Volunteers).
Harold Gladstone Bradley to be Lieutenant. Date of commission, 2nd September, 1908.
Walter Edward Kiddey to be Lieutenant. Date of commission, 2nd September, 1908.

Bruce Rifle Volunteers.
Gilbert Simpson to be Lieutenant. Date of commission, 3rd June, 1908.

New Zealand Medical Corps.
Joseph Patrick Frengley to be Captain. Date of commission, 28th September, 1908.

Notice respecting Raffles, &c., under "The Gaming Act, 1908."

Office of the Minister of Internal Affairs,
Wellington, 15th October, 1908.

THE following section of "The Gaming Act, 1908," is published for general information:β€”
"42. (1.) If any person being the owner of any painting, drawing, sculpture, or other work of art, or literature, or mineral specimens, or mechanical models. applies to the Minister of Internal Affairs for permission to dispose of the same by raffle or chance, the said Minister may, if he thinks fit, grant a license for that purpose, subject to such conditions and restrictions as he thinks right to impose.
(2.) If such conditions and restrictions are complied with. the provisions of this Act, or any other law for the time being in force relating to gaming and lotteries, shall not apply to such owner or to any other persons who may be bona fide concerned in such transaction."
The words "or other work of art" in the above extract are held to mean articles of the nature of paintings, drawings, or sculptures. No articles exc-pt those mentioned in any license granted by the Minister of Internal Affairs shall be disposed of by raffle or chance, either as gifts to prize-winners or on any other pretext.
A copy of each license granted by the Minister will be sent to the Police, in order that proceedings may be taken in the event of any infringement of the Act.
