Altitude, from 200 ft. to 1,500 ft. above sea-level. Section 1,
about 80 acres of very good flat land, 760 acres broken and
undulating, and 250 acres cliffs and very steep tawa spurs.
Section 2, about 200 acres cliffs and steep tawai spurs at
southern end; remainder broken, undulating, and flat. Both
sections are covered with heavy mixed forest, comprising
tawa, rata, rimu, rewarewa, tawai, hinau, miro, with fairly
dense undergrowth of supplejack, punga, fern, kiekie, and
tutu. Soil is fair to good quality, on papa-and sandstone
formation; well watered by Awakino River and tributaries.
Distant about three miles from Mahoenui Post-office—half-
mile by Te Kuiti-Awakino Main Road, and two miles and a
half by surveyed road not yet formed. There are some coal
outcrops at the south end of Section 1.

Opening Lands in Westland Land District for Selection on
Renewable Lease.
PLUNKET, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities
conferred upon me by "The Land Act, 1908," I, William
Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Dominion of New
Zealand, having received the report of the Under-Secretary
in this behalf, as provided in section one hundred and fifty-
four of the said Act, do hereby declare that the rural lands
described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for selection on
Tuesday, the twenty-second day of December, one thousand
nine hundred and eight; and also that the lands mentioned
in the said Schedule may be selected on renewable lease
only, in accordance with the provisions of section one
hundred and thirty-five of the said Act, as they contain,
or are supposed to contain, metals, minerals, or valuable
stone; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which
the said lands shall be leased, as mentioned in the said
Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be
leased under and subject to the provisions of "The Land
Act, 1908."

mile from Wataroa Post and Telephone Office.
SECOND-CLASS LAND.
Westland County.—Wataroa Survey District.

130 acres low hills, covered with bush; balance of 57 acres
being swamp. The formation is mostly river deposit, on
gravel subsoil. Distant about four miles from Rotokino

bed.

with heavy bush, and the balance raupo swamp. The
formation is mostly river deposit, on gravel subsoil. Part
of the swamp is drainable. Distant about four miles from
Rotokino Post and Telephone Office by metalled dray-road
and river-bed.
Westland County.—Totara Survey District.

bush, principally kamahi, with a few scattered rimu; soil
good; about 30 acres subject to flood; well watered. Dis-

light scrub; balance heavy mixed bush, principally kamahi
and rimu, with supplejack and fern; about 15 acres stony;

tant twenty miles from Hokitika and three miles and a half
from a creamery.

Opening National Endowment Lands in Auckland Land
District for Selection.
PLUNKET, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities
conferred upon me by "The Land Act, 1908," I,
William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Dominion
of New Zealand, do hereby declare that the national
endowment lands described in the Schedule hereto shall
be open for selection on renewable lease on Monday, the
twenty-first day of December, one thousand nine hun-
dred and eight, at the rentals mentioned in the said
Schedule; and I do also declare that the said lands shall
be leased under and subject to the provisions of section one
hundred and thirty-five of the said Act, as they contain,
or are supposed to contain, metal, mineral, or valuable
stone.

Section 2, about 289 acres wiwi swamp, balance dry
land; Section 3, about 164 acres swamp; Section 4, about
458 acres swamp; Section 7, about 345 acres swamp; Sec-
tion 11, about 190 acres swamp; Section 15, about 328 acres
swamp. The swamp in Sections 2 and 3 will grow flax. The
wiwi swamp is from fair to inferior in quality, on peaty bot-
tom, and, if drained, will largely grow flax; in summer the
swamp can be crossed practically dry-shod. By draining in a
small way swamps could be made available for dry seasons,
but would flood in winter. The dry land is undulating, with
inferior clay soil, and can for the most part be ploughed.
The land is covered with stunted manuka and scrub.
