Opening Lands in Taranaki Land District for Sale or Selection.
PLUNKET, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by “The Land Act, 1892,” and its amendments, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, having received the report of the Under-Secretary in this behalf, as provided in section one hundred and thirty-six of the said Act, do hereby declare that the lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on Wednesday, the twenty-fifth day of March, one thousand nine hundred and eight; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase, or on renewable lease; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

FIRST-CLASS LANDS.
Ohura Survey District.

Situated at the junction of the Paorae and Harvey Roads. The access is from Ongarue, distant about thirty-eight miles, of which about thirty-two miles is a dray-road and the remainder horse-track. The land is broken, with a few small flats along Paorae Road and Stream, and is covered with a mixed forest of rimu, hinau, kahikatea, tawa, rewarewa, with manuka and a dense undergrowth. The soil is of fair quality, resting upon a papa formation, and is fairly well watered.

The land is steep, with some easy country on the frontage, and is covered with a mixed forest of rimu, hinau, kahikatea, tawa, rewarewa, with manuka and a dense undergrowth. The soil varies from fair to good, resting upon a papa formation, and is fairly well watered.

The land is steep and fairly rough, with good flats on Harvey Road, and is covered with heavy forest of tawa, rimu, hinau, matai, kahikatea, and totara, with a dense undergrowth. The soil is good, resting upon a papa formation; well watered.

Situated on the Puhi Road. The access is from Mangaroa, about thirteen miles distant—two miles by dray-road, remainder pack-track. The land comprises very steep slopes and gullies, covered with a heavy forest, principally of tawa, with tawhero on ridges, and an undergrowth of karamu, &c. The soil is of good quality, resting upon a formation of papa; well watered. Elevation varies from 700 ft. to 1,200 ft. above sea-level.

Situated on the Tokirima and Kokopuiti Roads. The access is from Mangaroa, about ten miles distant, of which two miles is a dray-road and the remainder pack-track. The land will eventually also be accessible from Taumarunui Railway-station, which is about twenty miles distant. The land comprises fairly easy hills, a portion being steep and broken, and about 50 acres is ploughable. The land is partially covered with a forest varying from heavy to very light, comprising tawa, tawhero, rewarewa, manuka, &c., and a light undergrowth. The soil is poor, resting upon a papa formation; well watered.
Heao Survey District.

Situated on the Tokirima Road. The access is from Mangaroa, distant about eleven miles, of which two miles is a dray-road and the remainder pack-track. Access will eventually be obtained from Taumarunui, distant about twenty-one miles. The land comprises some easy hills, a portion being ploughable, and some fern and scrub land, but the greater part is steep and broken, and is partly covered with a very light forest of tawa, tawhero, rewarewa, &c., with practically no undergrowth. The soil is of poor quality, resting upon a papa formation; well watered. The area of this section is subject to amendment upon the deviation of the Tokirima Road (which has been provisionally adopted) being finally surveyed, and for which no compensation will be payable to the lessee of the land.
SECOND-CLASS LANDS.
Aria Survey District.

Situated on the Paraheka and Waitewhena Roads at their junction with Paro Road. The access is from Te Kuiti, about thirty-two miles distant, of which twenty-seven miles is a formed dray-road, remainder horse-track. The land is rough, rising steeply from small flats on Paraheka Stream, and is covered with a heavy forest of rata, rimu, tawa, rewarewa, kahikatea, &c., with a dense undergrowth. The soil is fair to good, resting upon a papa-and-sandstone formation; well watered. The elevation ranges from 500 ft. to 1,200 ft. above sea-level.
Waro Survey District.

Situated on the Waitaanga North Road, which has been stumped and cleared from its junction with the Tongaporutu-Mangaroa Road; formation as bridle-road is now in progress. Access is from Okau, connected by dray-road with Tongaporutu, which is about twenty-eight miles distant—ten miles dray-road, sixteen miles bridle-road, and the remainder walking-track. Mangaroa, about fifteen miles distant, will eventually be the most convenient township. The land comprises low spurs and easy slopes, with a considerable area of flat country along the road frontage. Fair soil, on sandstone-and-papa formation. Well watered. Very heavy forest, comprising rimu, rata, tawa, tawhero, and birch, with dense undergrowth. Elevation, from 1,350 ft. to 1,750 ft. above sea-level.
