Soil of medium quality, resting on sandstone formation; well watered. Situated about eighteen miles from Kihikihi—ten miles formed road, balance track along which a cart can be taken to section.

Soil of medium quality, resting on limestone and sandstone formation; well watered by swamps. About six miles and a half from Otorohanga—six miles formed road, half a mile not yet formed.

Opening Lands in Auckland Land District for Selection on Renewable Lease.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” and its amendments, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, having received the report of the Under-Secretary in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for selection on Wednesday, the twenty-fifth day of March, one thousand nine hundred and eight; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may be selected on renewable lease only, in accordance with the provisions of section one hundred and twenty-one of the said Act, as it contains, or is supposed to contain, metals, minerals, or valuable stone; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892,” and its amendments.

Section 69A: Altitude, from 140 ft. to 400 ft. above sea-level. About 230 acres ploughable; 30 acres fairly good swamp; remainder mostly broken, and covered with fern and manuka. With the exception of the swamp, the soil is of inferior quality, on clay-and-flinty formation. Well watered by Waitakaruru Stream. Section 70A: Altitude, from 150 ft. to 250 ft. above sea-level. About 45 acres fairly good swamp, covered with rushes, manuka, raupo, and flax; balance undulating; nearly all ploughable; covered with fern and manuka scrub. Soil, except in swamp, of inferior quality; heavy clay on clay-and-flinty formation. Indifferently watered by small streams. Access from Pokeno, twenty-one to twenty-two miles distant—twenty miles formed, balance unformed. Distant from five to six miles from head of navigation at Waitakaruru by unformed road.

Undulating land of second-class quality, covered with manuka and fern; about three-fourths of section ploughable, but there are some steep spurs on the south-west side. The section is intersected by a long narrow tongue of swamp from ½ chain to 1 chain in width, containing some short scattered flax. Fairly well watered. Situated about twenty-one miles from Mercer by formed road, and about five miles from Maramarua Coal-mine.

TAURANGA COUNTY.—OTANEWAINUKU SURVEY DISTRICT.

Altitude, from 50 ft. to 200 ft. above sea-level. Undulating fern land, with about 2 acres light mixed forest. Soil of fair quality, on volcanic-cement formation. Well watered. Fronts Tauranga—Cambridge Road, which is open for wheel traffic. About ten miles from post-office, Tauranga.

RAGLAN COUNTY.—PEPEPE PARISH.

Altitude, 100 ft. to 350 ft. above sea-level. Undulating fern land. Soil of medium quality, on limestone formation. Well watered by running stream. Distant nine miles from Huntly by ferry and formed road.

Altitude, from 70 ft. to 100 ft. above sea-level. Generally undulating land, about 2 acres swamp, balance covered with fern and tea-tree. Clay soil, inferior on the high ground, but of much better quality on the lower; general quality fair. Well watered. Access from Huntly, five miles distant, by ferry and good road.

ROTORUA COUNTY.—ROTOITI SURVEY DISTRICT.

Altitude, 1,000 ft. to 1,100 ft. above sea-level. Broken and undulating country; about 80 acres fern land, balance covered with mixed forest, mostly tawa, rata, and some rimu, with dense undergrowth. Soil of good quality, on volcanic formation. Well watered by small stream. Situated about seventeen miles from Rotorua—eleven miles by main Rotorua—Tauranga Road and six miles by formed dray-road.

WHANGAREI COUNTY.—OPUAWHANGA SURVEY DISTRICT.

Altitude, 300 ft. to 330 ft. above sea-level. Level land, covered with fern and scrub. Soil a mixed loam and clay of medium quality, resting on a clay subsoil. Well watered by streams. Situated ten miles from Hikurangi Railway-station by good dray-road.
