THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY. - SAN PABLO BAY, NAPA CREEK. WRECK. Information has been received that a barge loaded with 500 tons of coal lies sunk across the moorings of South Vallejo buoy No. 2, in the fairway between Mare Island and Vallejo, San Pablo Bay, California. The derrick of the wrecked barge shows about 15 ft. above water.
Red lights will be shown from the wreck at night.
CHINA SEA.
SCAWFELL SHOAL. POSITION AND DEPTH. Information dated 28th April, 1908, has been received from the commander of H.B.M. surveying-vessel "Waterwitch" that Scawfell Shoal, China Sea, is located in approximately latitude 7°18' N., longitude 106°51' E., and has a least depth of 5 fathoms over it.
CHINA.
YANGTZE RIVER. BLAKENEY REACH. NORTH-EAST CROSSING BEACON LIGHT MOVED. The Chinese Government has given notice that the North-east Crossing beacon light, Blakeney Reach, Yangtze River, China, has been moved from the north to the south bank of the river in order to better guide vessels over the crossing.
EAST COAST. KYAUCHAU BAY APPROACH. TAI-KUNG-TAU. INTENDED LIGHT. The German Government has given notice that in May, 1908, an unwatched fixed red light would be established on Tai-kung-tau, Kyauchau Bay approach, east coast of China. The light will be exhibited, 26 ft. above the ground and 424 ft. above high water, from a circular iron tower, painted black, erected on the summit of the island. The light will be visible 4 miles all round the horizon.
Approx. position: Lat. 35°57' 40" N., long. 120°29' 20" E.

AFRICA.
ST. HELENA. JAMES BAY APPROACH. Two white spherical buoys, surm. by a white staff and black triangle, marked "Telegraph," are est. in the approach, the nrn. buoy with Jamestown lt. (15°55' S., 5°42½' W.) S. 3° W. 54/6 cables, and Banks Pt. S. 78° E.; and the snt. buoy with Jamestown lt. S. 12° W. 34/6 cables, and Banks Pt. N. 87° E. The black and white cheq. buoys shown on the chart in this vicinity have been erased, and the line of prohibited anchorage altered to pass to the wrd. of the nrn. buoy. June.
East Coast.
DELAGOA BAY. The following buoys have been withdrawn and white masonry beacons surm. by cyls., 16 ft. high, est. in the bay and its approaches: 1. a. The two black buoys in Polana Chan., 2½ miles E. and 1¼ mile S. 81° E. respectively from Reuben Pt. lt. (25°58¾' S., 32°36' E.). b. The black conical buoy surm. by a cone, in Hope Chan., 2½ miles N. 80° E. from Cockburn Shoal beacon lt. 2. a. Cape Inyack beacon, on Inyack Hill (385 ft.), 13/10 miles S.-wrd. of Inyack Lt.-h. This beacon in line with Cape Inyack Lt.-h. clears Danae Reef to the wrd. b. A beacon in 25°233' S., 33°51' E., on long bare sand ridge (290 ft.). c. A beacon in 25°93' S., 33°29½' E., on a hill about 453 ft. high, on wrn. bank. June.
The red conical buoy off the snt. side of Lech Reef, in the bay, has been replaced by a red spar buoy surm. by a ball, moored in 25°54½' S., 32°48¼' E., about 2½ cables erd. of the prev. buoy. The lt. of the lt.-buoy in English River 5½ cables S. 32° W. from Reuben Pt. lt. has been altered from red to green. The lt. 1½ miles N. 54° W. from Reuben Pt. lt. has been altered from red and green to green. Also, a red lt. is exh. from the "Catembe Shipping-works," but the position is not stated. May.
ZAVARA PT. A lt.-h. is reported to be in course of constr. on this pt. (24°28½' S., 35°12½' E.). Jan.
BEIRA HARB. APPROACH. On 11th May, 1908, Jea Tower, in 19°50¼' S., 34°50¼' E., had been destroyed by fire. June.
ARABIAN SEA.
BOMBAY HARB. On 15th April, 1908, a F. white lt., vis. from S. 68° W., through W. and N., to S. 32° E., elev. 32 ft., was to be exh. from Tucker beacon (18°56' N., 72°52¾' E.). June.
EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO.
SINGAPORE MAIN STRAIT. A pilot-station is est. in 1°9¼' N., 103°54' E., on Pulo Sambu, and the following sigs. for vessels requiring a pilot in the Rhio Archip. are brought into use: a. From the vessel. By day, flags P.T., International Code, Pilot Jack, or the vessel's national flag at the fore. By night, a blue lt. every 15 mins., or a white lt. shown over the stern at short or frequent intervals for about a min. at a time. The above should be made until answered from the station as follows, or until the pilot is on board. b. From the station. By day, a ball at the sig. masthead. By night, a red lt. at the sig. masthead, and a rocket fired. If a vessel is permitted to enter without a pilot, a cone, pt. up, will be hoisted at the sig. masthead during the day. or two rockets fired in succ. at night. A vessel carrying mails should hoist two flags of the nation to which she belongs at the fore, one below the other. June.
CHINA SEA.
TONG KING. HALONG BAY. The following dangers exist in the snt. approach to the bay: 1. a. A rk. carrying 2 fms., in 20°47¼' N., 107°5½' E. b. A rk. awash at L.W., in 20°44½' N., 107°3¼' E. c. A rk. carrying 3¼ fms., in 20°41' N., 107°2¼' E., 58/10 cables S. 36° E. from Quille Islet (Nine-pin Rk.). This rk. forms part of a rocky plateau having general depths of 5½ fms.; the plateau extends about ½ cable erd. and 2½ cables N.-wrd. from the rk. 2. A bank carrying 6½ fms., in 20°39½' N., 107°3½' E., 4 cables S. 62° W. from Ta Lao Pai (Offing Rk.). June.
RUGGED ISLS. S.W. HORN LT.-H. Two fog-guns, with an interval of 3 mins. between them, will be fired from the lt.-h. (30°35¾' N., 121°58' E.) when vessels by their sigs. or otherwise are known to be in the vicinity. This sig. will be repeated if necessary after an interval of 12 mins. June.
CHIN KIANG FU. A new hulk has been est. as a pier, connected with the coast by a pier, belongs to the Nam Shun Chi Company, and is numbered on the chart for reference No. 9, 8 cables E. from Garlic Hill beacon (32°12¼' N., 119°25¾' E.). The reference to the hulks or piers on the chart should be amended as follows: No. 1. Cie Asiatique de Navigation. No. 2. Butterfield and Swire, and Jardine, Matheson, and Co. No. 3. Jardine, Matheson, and Co. No. 4. Butterfield and Swire. No. 5. Melchers and Co. No. 6. Geddes and Co. No. 7. China Merchants Company. No. 8. Nisshin Kisen Kaisha. No. 9. Nam Shun Chi. June.
PACIFIC OCEAN.
ADMIRALTY ISLS. NARES HARB. A dark coral patch is reported to lie in 1°55¼' S., 146°36¼' E., in the harb., with S.-ern. pt. of Tracey Isl. S. 29°W. ½ mile, and wnr. extr. of D'Entrecasteaux Isl. N. 52° W. As no depth is given, this danger is charted as '⊕', Sumatra P.D." June.
NORTH AMERICA. WEST COAST.
MAYOR CHAN. A quick occ. red lt. (U), elev. 30 ft., R. 7 miles, is exh. from a red beacon, a steel cyl. tank on a frame, surm. by a pyra. frame and lantern, on the black stone beacon (48°25½' N., 123°17¼' W.) on Lewis Reef. June.
SISTER RKS. LT.-H. A fog-diaphone, worked by compressed air, sounding two blasts every 90 secs.—blast 3 secs., silence 4 secs.; blast 3 secs., silence 80 secs.—is est. in a white house with red roof at the lt.-h. (49°29' N., 124°27½' W., wrd. of Lasqueti Isl. It is presumed that the fog-bell at this lt.-h. has been disc. June.
CARDERO CHAN. The lt. of the beacon (50°23¾' N., 125°11½' W.) on N.-ern. extr. of Gillard Isl. has been altered from occ. white to F. red. June.
On 1st June, 1908, the spindle beacon, 18 ft. high, on the Orchard Rks., Rich Passage, is to be replaced by a bell beacon, white octagonal pyra., with white lattice frame surm. by a bell (U), struck by the action of the tides once about every 16 secs., in 47°34¾' N., 122°31¼' W., on the rk., dry at L.W., 50 yds. S.-erd. from the spindle beacon. June.
UMATILLA REEF LT.-V. About 15th May, 1908, lt.-v. No. 67, carrying, in addition to her regular fog whistle or bell, a submarine bell striking the number 67—6 strokes, silence 3 secs.; 7 strokes, silence 5 secs.—is to be replaced on her station (48°10' N., 124°51' W.) off Flattery Rks., and Relief lt.-v. No. 76 withdrawn. June.
In addition to the regular fog-whistle or fog-bell, a submarine fog-bell striking No. 7 at regular intervals—7 strokes, silence 4 secs.—is est. in this lt.-v. (37°45' N., 122°41' W.). June.
About 18th May, 1908, lt.-v. No. 70 (37°45' N., 122°42' W.) was to be temp. replaced by a red lt.-buoy, marked "Lt.-v. moorings" in black, exh. a F. white lt. . June.
SOUTH AMERICA.
RIO DE JANEIRO HARB. A F. white lt. is exh. in 22°56½' S., 49°9' W., on Fort San Juan, in the entr. to the harb. June.
