given notice that the fixed red light heretofore shown from
the small wooden lighthouse on the northern edge of the
mud-flats on the southern side of the entrance to Nanaimo
Harbour, opposite Gallows Point, has been replaced by an
unwatched intermittent red acetylene light exhibited from a
beacon erected on the same site. The beacon consists of a
cylindrical steel tank standing on a steel framework and sur-
mounted by a pyramidal steel frame supporting the lantern,
the whole painted red.

Approx. position: Lat. 49° 10′ 12″ N., long. 123° 55′ 31″ W.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—BALLENAS ISLANDS.—FOG-ALARM
ESTABLISHED.—The Canadian Government has given notice
that a fog-alarm, consisting of a diaphone operated by com-
pressed air, has been established on the northern point of the
northernmost Ballenas Island, Strait of Georgia.

The diaphone is installed in a rectangular wooden building
painted white with red roof, and will sound, during thick or
foggy weather, 1 blast of four seconds’ duration every minute.

Approx. position: Lat. 49° 21′ 25″ N., long. 124° 09′ 40″ W.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—WHITE ISLET.—LIGHT CHANGED.—
The Canadian Government has given notice that the fixed
white light heretofore shown from a 31-day Wigham lamp on
White Islet, Strait of Georgia, has been replaced by an
unwatched intermittent white acetylene light exhibited from
a beacon erected on the same site.

The beacon consists of a cylindrical steel tank standing on
a steel framework and surmounted by a pyramidal steel
frame supporting the lantern, the whole painted red.

The light is elevated 36 ft. above high water.

Approx. position: Lat. 49° 24′ 50″ N., long. 123° 42′ 32″ W.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—MALASPINA STRAIT.—RAGGED
ISLANDS.—LIGHT CHANGED.—The Canadian Government has
given notice that the fixed white light heretofore shown from
a 31-day Wigham lamp on the eastern end of the Southern
Ragged Island, off the mainland shore of the Strait of
Georgia, has been replaced by an unwatched intermittent
white acetylene light exhibited from a beacon erected on the
same site. The beacon consists of a cylindrical steel tank
standing on a steel framework and surmounted by a pyramidal
steel frame supporting the lantern, the whole painted red.
The light is elevated 40 ft. above high water.

Approx. position: Lat. 49° 59′ 45″ N., long. 124° 48′ 40″ W.

BAY OF BENGAL.

ARAKAN COAST.—CHEDUBA STRAIT.—NORTHERN APPROACH.
MUD-VOLCANO REPORTED.—Information has been received
from the commander of H.R.I.M.S. “Investigator” of the
existence of a mud-volcano, with 4½ fathoms of water over it,
about 2 miles N. 58° W. true (N.W. by W. ¼ W. mag.) from
South Terrible Shoal, northern approach to Cheduba Strait,
Bay of Bengal.

Approx. position: Lat. 19° 24′ 15″ N., long. 93° 14′ 30″ E.

SIAM.—PAK CHAN RIVER ENTRANCE.—SPITEFUL ROCK.—
LIGHT REPORTED.—Information has been received from the
commander of H.R.I.M.S. “Investigator” that a flashing
white light, elevated about 90 ft. above the sea and visible 15
miles, is reported to be exhibited on Spiteful Rock, entrance
to the Pak Chan River, Bay of Bengal.

Approx. position: Lat. 9° 53′ N., long. 98° 27′ E.

CHINA.

EAST COAST.—NAM KWAN HARBOUR APPROACH.—PI KWAN
HARBOUR ENTRANCE.—CORRECTED POSITION OF SHOAL AND
BUOY.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 41 (371) of 1893,
the Japanese Government has given further notice that the
shoal, marked P D on the chart, about 1 mile south-south-
westward of Ping Fong Island, east coast of China, is an
isolated reef, having a depth of 3 fathoms over it at low
water springs. It is located on the following bearings:—

Northern peak on Ping Fong Island, N. 18° 10′ E. true
(N. by E. ¾ E. mag.), distant 2 miles.

Southern peak on Chin Kwan Island, N. 72° 30′ W. true
(W.N.W. ¼ W. w’ly mag.).

Approx. position: Lat. 27° 08′ 30″ N., long. 120° 30′ 30″
E.

The buoy marking this reef is not in the position shown on
the chart, but a red conical buoy is located about 400 yards
N. 43° 40′ E. true (north-east mag.) from the southern point
of Chin Kwan Island. It is thought probable that the buoy
was moved to this position, near which depths of more than
7½ fathoms have been obtained.

SAMOAN ISLANDS.

UPOLU ISLAND.—APIA HARBOUR.—EAST REEF BEACON
LIGHT.—ARC OF VISIBILITY.—The German Government has
given notice that the fixed green light on East Reef, entrance
to Apia Harbour, Upolu Island, is visible over an arc of 270°
from S. 32° W. true (S.S.W. mag.) to N. 58° W. true
(W.N.W. mag.).

Approx. position: Lat. 13° 48′ 50″ S., long. 170° 45′ 06″

CALIFORNIA.

SAN FRANCISCO LIGHT-VESSEL NO. 70 WITHDRAWN FROM
STATION.—RELIEF LIGHT-VESSEL.—About the 18th May,
1908, San Francisco light-vessel No. 70, stationed about

3½ miles outside the bar off the entrance to San Francisco
Harbour, 10½ miles S. 72° 20′ W. true (S.W. ⅔ W. mag.)
from Fort Point Lighthouse, and about 500 ft. northward of
the range line marked by Fort Point and Alcatraz lights, will
be withdrawn from her station for repairs, and the station
will be temporarily marked by Relief light-vessel No. 76.

Relief light-vessel No. 76 shows, unlike light-vessel No. 70,
two fixed white lens-lantern lights, each from three lanterns
encircling a masthead, but these are 46 ft. above the water
and visible about 12 miles in clear weather.

During thick or foggy weather light-vessel No. 76 will
sound a 12 in. steam-whistle with the same characteristics
as that sounded from light-vessel No. 70—viz., blasts of
2 seconds’ duration, separated by silent intervals of 28 seconds
—and she will also sound a submarine bell at regular intervals
with the same characteristics as light-vessel No. 70—thus,
7 strokes, silent interval 4 seconds, 7 strokes, silent interval
4 seconds.

Relief light-vessel No. 76 is a flush-deck steam-vessel, has
two masts, schooner-rigged, no bowsprit, a black smokestack
and the steam-whistle between the masts, but differs from
light-vessel No. 70 in having all visible parts from the bow to
the middle of the foremast and from the middle of the main-
mast aft painted red; all visible parts between the fore- and
main-mast, including the middle third of each lantern-mast,
white. The day-marks at the mastheads have five vertical
stripes, three red and two white, and on the spring-stay,
midway between the two masts, there is an oval hoop-iron
day-mark with one white and two red vertical stripes. The
number “76” is in white on each bow and each quarter and
in black on each side of the spring-stay day-mark. The word
“Relief” is painted in large black letters on the middle of
each side.

Light-vessel No. 70 will be returned to her station as soon
as repairs have been completed, of which due notice will be
given, and Relief light-vessel No. 76 will then be withdrawn.

SAN FRANCISCO LIGHT-VESSEL NO. 70.—SUBMARINE FOG-
BELL ESTABLISHED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 14
(545) of 1908, further notice is given that on 15th April, 1908,
a submarine fog-signal bell, which will sound during thick
or foggy weather the number 7 at regular intervals—thus,
7 strokes, silent interval 4 seconds, 7 strokes, silent interval
4 seconds—was established on board San Francisco light-
vessel No. 70, stationed about 3½ miles outside the bar off
the entrance to San Francisco Harbour, 10½ miles S. 72° 20′
W. true (S.W. ⅔ W. mag.) from Fort Point Lighthouse, and
about 500 ft. northward of the range line marked by Fort
Point and Alcatraz lights.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 44′ 56″ N., long. 122° 41′ 33″ W.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—SUISUN BAY.—DECREASED DEPTHS.
—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 16 (619) of 1908,
further information has been received from Pilot Charles N.
King that a sand-spit, with 12 ft. over it at mean low water,
has formed to the eastward of Army Point, Suisun Bay,
California.

This sand-spit extends from the bank north-eastward of
Army Point buoy in a S. 48° W. true (S.S.W. ⅝ W. w’ly mag.)
direction for a distance of 1½ miles from the 2-fathom con-
tour. The south-western point of the spit is located 1½ miles
N. 88° E. true (E.N.E. ¼ E. mag.) from the eastern extremity
of the mail-dock. The depths on the south-eastern side of
the sand-spit have increased somewhat on account of the
scouring action of the current from the San Joaquin and
Sacramento Rivers.

WASHINGTON.

PUGET SOUND.—RICH PASSAGE.—ORCHARD ROCKS.—
BEACON TO BE CHANGED.—About 1st June, 1908, a bell
operated by the tide, to be struck a single blow approxi-
mately every 16 seconds, will be established on a beacon
located on Orchard Rocks, Rich Passage, Puget Sound,
Washington.

The beacon will consist of a white, octagonal, truncated
pyramid, about 8 ft. above the water, surmounted by a white
lattice framework 24 ft. high, located about 150 ft. south-
eastward of the present beacon, on the following bearings:—

Beans Point, Bainbridge Island, S. 62° 15′ E. true (E. ⅔ S.
s’ly mag.).

Orchard Point light, S. 1° W. true (S. by E. ⅔ E. e’ly
mag.).

Point Glover, N. 48° W. true (W.N.W. ¼ W. w’ly mag.).

On the same date the present beacon will be discontinued.

Approx. position: Lat. 47° 34′ 40″ N., long. 122° 31′ 50″ W.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

MAUI ISLANDS.—MAALAEA BAY.—MCGREGOR POINT LIGHT-
STATION.—KEEPER’S HOUSE ERECTED.—A light-green one-
story keeper’s dwelling, with red roof, has been erected about
960 ft. north-westward of the light-mast at McGregor’s Point
Light-station, western side of Maalaea Bay, Maui Islands,
Hawaiian Islands.

Approx. position: Lat. 20° 46′ 50″ N., long. 156° 31′ 30″ W.

HAWAII.—KEYHOLE POINT LIGHT-STATION.—KEEPER’S
HOUSE ERECTED.—A light-grey one-story keeper’s dwelling,
with red roof, has been erected about 550 ft. eastward of the
