THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.
Entering Naden Harbour, to pass eastward of Hastings Reef, keep Bain and George Points in line bearing S. 38° 45' W. true (S. ½ W. mag.). When the extremity of the trees on Cape Naden comes in line with the outer rock eastward of the islets off Jorey Point, bearing N. 32° 15' W. true (N.W. by W. ⅜ W. w’ly mag.), the vessel will be on the bar, which may be crossed in a depth of not less than 13 ft. at low water, passing 400 yards eastward of Hastings Reef.
When the extremity of the trees at Cape Naden is seen coming in line with the western extreme of the westernmost islet off Jorey Point, bearing N. 16° 15' W. true (N.W. mag.), a vessel will be in deep water, and should alter course to the south-eastward, keeping the eastern shore (which is steep-to) at a distance of about 200 yards until past the foul ground extending north-eastward from Mary Point, where the channel is only 200 yards wide. The middle of the outer detached ledge off Mary Point, which dries 3 ft. at low water, is situated 0·4 mile N. 86° 45' E. true (N.E. by E. ½ E. e'ly mag.) from Mary Point. From the middle of this ledge foul ground extends in a northerly direction, terminating in a rocky ledge, which dries 4 ft. at low water, situated 0·5 mile N. 76° 45' E. true (N.E. ¼ E. mag.) from Mary Point.
To pass westward of Hastings Reef keep Bain and Mary Points in line bearing S. 28° 45' W. true (south mag.). This leads across the bar in not less than 13 ft., nearly 300 yards westward of Hastings Reef, and the same distance eastward from the dense kelp-field marking the foul ground to the westward. When the extremity of the trees at Cape Naden is in line with the western extreme of the western-most islet off Jorey Point as before, bearing N. 16° 15' W. true (N.W. mag.), the course should be changed to the south-eastward. These marks kept in line astern lead up to Deep Water Point, when the eastern shore should be closely followed, as previously stated. Hastings Reef and the detached ledges off Mary Point are not marked by kelp. The marks are easily recognised, but the passage eastward of Hastings Reef is preferable, as it is wider, and deep water is more quickly regained.
George Point is steep-to and may be rounded closely, after which the western shore should be kept on board until abreast of Bain Point in order to avoid the foul ground on the opposite shore, the channel being less than ¼ mile wide between George and Bain Points.
Good protected anchorage, sheltered from all winds, can be found anywhere in Naden Harbour in from 5 to 9 fathoms. The harbour is free from dangers, and the holding-ground is good.
Springs rise 19 ft., and the times of high and low water correspond very nearly with those at Port Simpson.
DIXON ENTRANCE. — ZAYAS ISLAND. — SHOAL SOUTH-WESTWARD.—The Canadian Government has given notice that Captain Freeman, of the steamer “Celestial Empire,” reports the existence of an extensive uncharted reef, which will be known as Celestial Reef, about 13½ miles from the southern end of Zayas Island, Dixon Entrance, British Columbia, on the following bearings:—
Zayas Island, southern end, N. 81° 30' E. true (N.E. ¾ E. mag.).
Rose Point, S. 5° W. true (S.S.E. e’ly mag.).
The reef appears to consist of three rocks lying in a north-north-west and south-south-east magnetic direction, with very shoal water at either end and in the middle.
With a westerly swell the sea breaks over the reef heavily at low water, and also breaks over the middle rock at high water.
This is a dangerous reef, and mariners are warned that these waters are unsurveyed and must be navigated with caution.
