EAST COAST.—CHAUAN BAY.—KWADRA (QUADRAL) ISLAND.—
SHOAL TO NORTHWARD.—Information dated 12th July, 1906,
has been received from Commander R. W. Glennie, H.B.M.
surveying vessel “Waterwitch,” that a narrow bank of mud
and sand, with a least depth of 2 fathoms over it at low
water, extends in a north-north-east direction 1½ miles from
the northern extremity of Kwadra (Quadral) Island, con-
necting at the northern end with the shoal water shown on
the chart.
Approximate position of Kwadra (Quadral) Island: Lati-
tude 23° 36' N., longitude 117° 17' E.

SAMOAN ISLANDS.
SAVAII ISLAND. — VOLCANO IN ERUPTION. — SOUNDINGS
CHANGED.—The French Government has given notice that
the commander of the gunboat “Zélée” reports, under date
of 7th July, 1906, that a volcano on the north-eastern side
of Savaii Island, Samoan Islands, was in eruption, and that
the depths near the shore seem to have changed.
It is advisable, therefore, not to trust the charts in this
locality until new soundings have been made.
Approx. position: Lat. 13° 30' S., long. 172° 20' W.

UPOLU ISLAND.—APIA HARBOUR RANGE LIGHT.—COLOUR OF
TOWERS.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 49 (1957) of
1902, the French Government has given notice that, accord-
ing to information received from the commander of the
gunboat “Zélée,” dated 7th July, 1906, the two towers
carrying the range light for entering Apia Harbour, Upolu
Island, Samoan Islands, are painted entirely white, and
not black and white in checkers, as stated in the Light
List.
Also, a beacon in the form of a pyramid has been esta-
blised on the reef north-westward of the entrance to the
harbour in (approximately) latitude 13° 48' 15" S., longitude
171° 45' 25" W.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.
NIUAFOU ISLAND.—CORRECTED POSITION.—The German Go-
vernment has given notice that the commander of the Ger-
man man-of-war “Condor” reports, under date of 4th July,
1906, that, by faultless observations, the Island of Niuafoou,
South Pacific Ocean, was found to be 6 miles to the east-
ward of its charted position.

Notice fixing Closing-hours of Saddle, Harness, &c., Shops
in the Borough of Waimate under the Shops and Offices
Act.
WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a
majority of the occupiers of all the shops in the
saddlery, harness, horse-collar, and horse-cover trades in the
Borough of Waimate, has been forwarded to me, desiring
that all such shops in the borough shall be closed at 6 p.m.
on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at 1 p.m.
on Thursdays (the weekly half-holiday), and at 9 p.m. on
Saturdays: And whereas the Waimate Borough Council
has certified that the signatures to such requisition repre-
sent a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in the
trades mentioned in the borough:
Now, therefore, I, James McGowan, acting for and on
behalf of the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 21
of “The Shops and Offices Act, 1904,” and section 5 of
“The Shops and Offices Act Amendment Act, 1905,” do
hereby direct that from and after the 19th day of Novem-
ber, 1906, all the shops mentioned in the Borough of
Waimate shall be closed in accordance with such requisi-
tion.

THE following clauses of “The Stamp Act Amendment
Act, 1906,” are published for general information.

“The Stamp Act Amendment Act, 1906.”
- (1.) The Governor may from time to time appoint a
Minister of the Crown (being a member of the Executive
Council) to be Minister of Stamp Duties, who shall be
charged with the general administration of the principal
Act.
(2.) The Commissioner of Stamps appointed under the
principal Act and in office on the coming into operation of
this Act shall be deemed to have been appointed Minister of
Stamp Duties under this Act. - (1.) There shall be a Commissioner of Stamps appointed
from time to time by the Governor in Council, who, under
the direction of the Minister, shall have the chief control of
all matters relating to stamp duties imposed by the principal
Act.
(2.) The Secretary for Stamps in office on the coming
into operation of this Act shall be the Commissioner under
this Act, and the office of Secretary shall be deemed to have
been abolished.
Appointment of Inspector of Machinery, Surveyor of Ships,
and Examiner of Marine Engineers.
Inspection of Machinery Department,

APPLICATIONS will be received up to the 3rd December
next, at this office, for this appointment.
Applicants must have served an apprenticeship as an
engineer for at least five years, must be not less than
twenty-five and not more than forty years of age, and must
have served at sea in charge of engines for at least five
years in a position of not less than second engineer. The
applicants must also possess a first-class certificate of com-
petency as marine engineer, and must forward a medical
certificate showing that they are in good health and of a
robust constitution.
Applicants must give full particulars of their service on
shore and at sea, and forward letters of recommendation,
testimonials, discharges, and certificates that they may
possess, including certificate of birth.
The salary payable will be at the rate of £275 per annum.
The selected applicant will be required to undertake the
duties of Inspector of Machinery, Surveyor of Ships, Ex-
aminer of Marine Engineers, and Examiner of Land
Stationary, Winding, and Traction and Locomotive Engine
Drivers, and generally perform such work as may be re-
quired by this Department.
The appointment will be subject to the provisions of “The
Civil Service Reform Act, 1886,” and “The Civil Service
Insurance Act, 1893.”
The selected candidate will be required to commence his
duties about the 7th January, 1907.
