THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Hydrographic Office, Washington, D.C., United States of America, are published for general information.

JAVA.

NORTH COAST.—BABI ISLAND.—INTENDED CHANGE IN LIGHT.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the fixed white light shown on Babi Island, north coast of Java, will be replaced by an intermittent white light every 15 seconds—thus, light 10 seconds, eclipsed 5 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 5° 49′ S., long. 106° 17′ E.

EAST INDIA ISLANDS.

GASPAR STRAIT.—LEPAR ISLAND.—TANJONG LABU.—INTENDED CHANGE IN LIGHT.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the fixed white light on the eastern point of Lepar Island, Gaspar Strait, will be replaced by a fourth-order flashing white light, showing 1 flash of 1 second duration every 3 seconds. The white iron openwork truss will be 66 ft. high.

Approx. position: Lat. 2° 57′ S., long. 106° 54′ 30″ E.

BAY OF BENGAL.

HUGLI RIVER ENTRANCE.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN LIGHT-VESSEL.—The Government of India has given notice, dated 1st August, 1906, that about 15th January, 1907, intermediate light-vessel, Hugli River Entrance, Bay of Bengal, exhibiting a fixed white light, will be replaced by a light-vessel exhibiting an unwatched intermittent white light every 20 seconds—thus, light 4 seconds, eclipsed 2 seconds, light 4 seconds, eclipsed 10 seconds—elevated 35 ft. above the sea, and visible 11 miles. A riding light, elevated 12 ft. above the sea, will also be exhibited.

The vessel is painted red, and marked “Intermediate,” and will have no day-marks.

A bell on board will be rung by the vessel’s motion.

SUMATRA.

SOUTH COAST.—SUNDA STRAIT.—TELOK BETUNG.—INTENDED CHANGE IN LIGHT.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the fixed red light of Telok Betung, northern shore of Sunda Strait, south coast of Sumatra, will be replaced by a sixth-order flashing white light, showing 1 flash of 1 second duration every 3 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 5° 27′ S., long. 105° 16′ E.

CHINA SEA.

SINGAPORE STRAIT.—CONEY ISLAND.—RAFFLES LIGHT.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 52 (2149) of 1905, further telegraphic information has been received from the master attendant at Singapore that on 24th September, 1906, the character of the Raffles light, Coney Island, will be altered from fixed white to group flashing white, showing groups of 3 flashes in quick succession every 10 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 1° 10′ N., long. 103° 44′ 30″ E.

NORTH COAST.—MADURA STRAIT.—PASURUAN.—INTENDED CHANGE IN LIGHT.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that it is intended to replace the fixed white light at Pasuruan, Madura Strait, north coast of Java, by a sixth-order intermittent white light every 30 seconds—thus, light 3 seconds, eclipsed 3 seconds, light 12 seconds, eclipsed 12 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 7° 37′ 30″ S., long. 112° 55′ E.

NORTH COAST.—MADURA STRAIT.—PANARUKAN.—INTENDED CHANGE IN LIGHT.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the fixed white light at Panarukan will be replaced by a sixth-order flashing white light, showing 1 flash of 1 second duration every 3 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 7° 41′ 30″ S., long. 113° 36′ 5″ E.

LOMBOK ISLAND.—AMPENAN.—INTENDED CHANGE IN LIGHT.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the fixed white light at Ampenan, Lombok Island, East Indies, will be replaced by a fourth-order intermittent white light every 30 seconds—thus, light 3 seconds, eclipsed 3 seconds, light 12 seconds, eclipsed 12 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 8° 34′ 15″ S., long. 116° 4′ 9″ E.

CALIFORNIA.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—ANITA ROCK BEACON DESTROYED.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.—Information has been received that, pending the rebuilding of Anita Rock beacon, San Francisco Bay, California, which was destroyed on 13th August, 1906, a third-class nun buoy, painted red and black in horizontal stripes, has been established in 39 ft. of water about 75 ft. N. 12° E. true (N. ½ W. mag.) from the rock.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—CASTRO ROCKS GAS BUOY ESTABLISHED.—RED ROCK GAS BUOY DISCONTINUED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 33 (1420) of 1906, further notice is given that on 11th September, 1906, a gas buoy, painted red and marked C.R. 2, showing an intermittent white light every 20 seconds—thus, light 10 seconds, eclipsed 10 seconds—was established in 54 ft. of water about 500 ft. S. 57° W. true (S.W. ½ S. mag.) from the outermost of the Castro Rocks, San Francisco Bay.

On the same date Red Rock gas buoy, horizontally striped, located about 850 ft. (½ mile) S. 24° 30′ E. true (S.E. ¼ S. mag.) from Red Rock, San Francisco Bay, was permanently discontinued.

Approximate position of Castro Rocks buoy: Lat. 37° 55′ 49″ N., long. 122° 25′ 20″ W.

CHINA SEA.

SINGAPORE STRAIT.—PULO BLAKANG PADANG.—BEACON AND BUOYS ESTABLISHED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that an iron beacon surmounted by a white ball has been erected on the reef on the northern side of Pulo Blakang Padang, Singapore Strait, on the following bearings:—

Largest island northward of Pulo Blakang Padang, north point, S. 65° W. true (S.W. by W. ⅝ W. w’ly mag.).

Same island as above, east point, S. 6° E. true (S. ⅞ E. mag.).

Pulo Blakang Padang, east point, S. 39° E. true (S.E. ⅜ S. s’ly mag.).

Approx. position: Lat. 1° 9′ 58″ N., long. 103° 53′ 10″ E.

Also that a conical white buoy with a ball top-mark has been moored south-westward of Pulo Mariam (Rabbit Island) in 4½ fathoms of water on the following bearings:—

Pulo Sambu, south-east side, N. 14° E. true (N. by E. ⅛ E. mag.).

Pulo Mariam, north side, N. 32° E. true (N.N.E. ¾ E. mag.).

Pulo Mariam, south side, N. 63° E. true (N.E. by E. ½ E. mag.).

Approx. position: Lat. 1° 8′ 55″ N., long. 103° 54′ 20″ E.

Also that a black can buoy surmounted by a cone has been moored south-eastward of Pulo Mariam (Rabbit Island) on the following bearing:—

Largest island northward of Pulo Blakang Padang, north side, in line with north side of Pulo Mariam.
