HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL.

Mangatoki Riding Supplementary Loan, £850; Okaiawa Riding Loan, £1,050.

THAT, in pursuance and exercise of the powers vested in it in that behalf by “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1901,” and the amendments thereof, the Hawera County Council hereby resolves as follows:—

  1. That, for the purpose of providing the interest and other charges on a loan of £850, authorised to be raised by the Hawera County Council, under the above-mentioned Act, to supplement the original loan of £1,650, also raised under the said Act, to defray the Mangatoki Riding’s share of the cost of rebuilding or building the undermentioned bridges, such supplementary loan to be allotted as follows—

the said Hawera County Council hereby makes and levies a special rate of ⅞d. in the pound upon the whole of the rateable and hereafter to become rateable property within the Mangatoki Riding of the Hawera County; and that such special rate shall be an annual-recurring rate during the currency of such loan, and be payable yearly on the 15th day of October in each and every year during the currency of such loan, being a period of forty-one years, or until the loan is fully paid off; and that the interest to be paid is at the rate of 4 per cent. per annum.

  1. That, for the purpose of providing the interest and other charges on a loan of £1,050, authorised to be raised by the said Council, under the before-mentioned Act, for the following works:—

  1. That the interest and sinking fund in respect of the above loans, or any addition thereto, shall be paid out of the general fund of the Hawera County Council and be charged to the respective ridings.

I hereby certify that the special order was made at a special meeting on the 19th day of May, 1906, and duly confirmed on the 30th day of June, 1906.

AFRICA.

CAPE COLONY.—A yellow flag having a black ball in the centre has been adopted as the immigration flag at all ports within the colony. This flag, hoisted at the stay by vessels arriving in port, denotes that the exam. of passengers by the Immigration Officer is being carried out, and that no person not provided with a permit, or duly authorised by the Immigration Office, is, under penalty, allowed on board that vessel.

INDIAN OCEAN.

Sunken Wrecks.

CEYLON.—COLOMBO HARB. APPROACH.—On 21st April the s.s. “Kazan,” in approx. 6° 41′ N., 79° 52¾′ E., on the Nilkete Rks., in the approach to the harb., forms a prominent object from seaward, and, as the vessel is unlikely to disappear quickly, she will be useful as a nav. aid for some time.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO.

PULO PENANG.—PULO RIMAU Lt.—This lt. has been altered from F. to an occ. red lt., vis. 17½ secs., ecl. 2½ secs., elev. 129 ft. above H.W., R. 13 miles, exh. from an iron lt.-h. 57 ft. high, on a masonry base, in 5° 14′ N., 100° 16½′ E., on the ern. side of the isl., 1¾ cables N. 12° E. from its srn. pt.

CHINA SEA, ETC.

CHUSAN ARCHIP.—TONGTING ISL.—A group-fl. lt., showing groups of 4 fls., is to be exh. from a lt.-h. now in course of constr. on the isl. About 1st May, 1906, a provis. group-occ. white lt., with groups of 4 ecls. every 30 secs.—lt. 16 secs., ecl. 2 secs.; lt. 2 secs., ecl. 2 secs.; lt. 2 secs., ecl. 2 secs.; lt. 2 secs., ecl. 2 secs.—elev. 180 ft. above H.W., R. 10 miles, was to be exh. in 29° 51¾′ N., 122° 35½′ E., from the summit of the isl. A fog-sig. is also to be est. on this isl.

Cooper Bank lt.-boat (32° 5′ N., 120° 10′ E.) has been moved 6½ cables S. 74° W., and moored in 21 ft. L.W., on the edge of the bank forming the wrn. side of Kiushan Chan. It now marks the port side of the chan. for vessels bound up river.

On 1st July, 1906, a red lt.-v., exh. an occ. white lt. every 10 secs. (U.)—lt. 5 secs., ecl. 5 secs.—elev. 35 ft., R. 11 miles, is to be est. in 34° 24½′ N., 121° 56½′ E., about 3 miles N. 83° W. from Drinkwater Pt. lt. and bell buoy. A bell, rung by the motion of the vessel, will be suspended on board. On the est. of the above lt.-v. the group-fl. white lt. on Drinkwater Pt. and Drinkwater Pt. lt. and bell buoy are to be disc.

PACIFIC OCEAN.

Ellice Islands.

NANOMANA ISL.—A bank carrying 7 fms., about ½ a mile long N.-ely. and S.-wly. and 2 cables broad, on which rollers were observed, is reported to exist 2 miles N. 3° E. from the N. pt. of Nanomana Isl. It has been charted in approx. 6° 15½′ S., 176° 20½′ E., and marked P.D.

NORTH AMERICA.

West Coast.

JUAN DE FUCA STRAIT.—A series of fish-traps, extending from 1½ to 2 miles from the shore, are in course of erection in Juan de Fuca Strait, off the S. coast of Vancouver Isl., between Sooke Inlet and Port San Juan (48° 33′ N., 124° 27′ W.). It is not stated whether these erections are above water or not, but mariners are warned to keep clear of them.

The fog-bell, rung by hand, on Berens Isl., is replaced by a fog-bell, struck by machinery once every 5 secs., elev. 20 ft. above H.W., est. in a white square wooden building, in 48° 25¼′ N., 123° 24′ W.

SOOKE INLET.—An F. white lt. (U.), elev. 18 ft. above H.W., R. 5 miles, is exh. from a wooden pole in 48° 21½′ N., 123° 44′ W., on the ern. extr. of Whiffen Spit. This lt., which is for the guidance of fishermen, is to be exh. annually from 1st March to 31st October.

NANAIMO HARB.—A fog-bell, sounding 1 stroke every 5 secs., elev. 20 ft. above H.W., is est. in a white square wooden building, in 49° 10′ N., 123° 55′ W., on Gallows Pt., harb. entr.; it has been charted on the srn. extr. of the pt.

ADMIRALTY CHART that has received large corrections:—

Notice to Mariners No. 70 of 1906.

WAIRAU BAR.—MOORING-BUOY LAID.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 3rd September, 1906.

NOTICE is hereby given that a black mooring-buoy has been placed off the mouth of the Wairau River, for the purpose of heaving vessels off the bar should they ground there at any time. The buoy lies in three and a half fathoms of water at low-water springs, and bears from the shallow part of the bar N.N.E., distant 130 fathoms, and from flagstaff N. by W., distant one mile.

Admiralty Charts, &c., affected: New Zealand Chart, Sheet V, No. 2054; Cook Strait Chart, No. 695.
