PLUNKET, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by section one hundred and thirty-six of “The Land Act, 1892,” and section two of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby declare and provide as follows, that is to say:—
-
The rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto are hereby set apart for disposal by way of sale or selection on and after the twenty-third day of October, one thousand nine hundred and six, at the respective prices specified in the said Schedule.
-
The said lands may be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase, or on lease in perpetuity: provided that in the case of lands containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, they shall be selected on lease in perpetuity only and shall not be purchased for cash.
-
For the purposes of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” the lands enumerated in the said Schedule hereto shall be deemed to be “heavy-bush land.”
-
No general rate shall be levied or collected by any local authority from the said lands for the period of four years from the date from which in each case respectively such lands are disposed of, and no local authority shall have power to levy or collect any such rate from such lands during such period.
-
After the first half-year’s rent has been paid by the selector the further instalments of rent payable by him for a period of four years shall not be demanded: provided that if at any time during the first five years of his occupancy the selector disposes of his interest in the land the rent so conceded shall be paid by him in full, and thereupon the Land Board may remit such instalments of rent payable by the incoming tenant, not exceeding in the aggregate the amount of rent previously conceded to the selector, as the Board shall think fit.

The block known as the Big Bush Block is situated in the Motupiko Survey District. The northern boundary of the land is about twenty miles southward from Belgrove Railway-station, and the block extends in a southerly direction to within about 30 chains of Lake Rotoiti. The geological formation of the country is slate and decomposed slate and sandstone on the east of the Motupiko River, and ironstone and sandstone conglomerate on the west of the river. There is schist formation towards the south-westward and slate on the south-eastern portion of the block. The greater part of the country is hilly, with very gradual slopes, and narrow flats along the Motupiko River and its tributaries, the back portions being rather inferior. The altitude varies from 1,600 ft. to 3,400 ft. above sea-level. The country is nearly all bush-clad, the principal timbers being brown-birch and red-birch, with some rimu, and thick undergrowth of birch, black, and other scrubs. The country is well watered, and is, in the main, suitable for pastoral purposes, and some of the flats are suitable for agriculture. The climate is rather moist, and the winters rather severe. There is a post and telegraph station at the junction of the road to the Buller (Roundell Road) with the road leading to Wairau, and the Tophouse Accommodation-house is practically at the same junction. The Big Bush Main Road to Tophouse and on towards the Wairau, and the Roundell and Black Valley Roads, are formed, and in parts are metalled; all the other roads in the block are unformed. The land can be got at from Nelson by railway to Belgrove, and thence by a formed road: there is no coach communication. The northern end of the block is about eight miles from Golden Downs Accommodation-house, and about fifteen miles from the nearest school at Gordon.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this eighteenth day of August, one thousand nine hundred and six.
ROBERT McNAB,
Minister of Lands.

Lands permanently reserved.
—
PLUNKET, Governor.
WHEREAS by the two-hundred-and-thirty-fifth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” it is enacted that the Governor may from time to time, either by general or particular description, and whether the same has been surveyed or not, reserve from sale temporarily, notwithstanding that the same may be then held under pastoral license, any Crown lands which in his opinion are required for any of the purposes in the said section mentioned:
And whereas by the two-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section of the said Act it is provided that land temporarily reserved under the said two-hundred-and-thirty-fifth section may, at the expiration of one month but not later than six months after the publication in the Gazette of notice of such temporary reservation, be permanently reserved, and that notice of such permanent reservation shall be published in the Gazette:
And whereas the lands specified in the first column of the Schedule hereto were, by the Warrants the dates of which are specified in the third column of the said Schedule, and the notifications of which were published in the Gazette specified in the fourth column, temporarily reserved under the authority of the said Act for the purposes specified in the second column of the said Schedule:
Now, therefore, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the power and authority vested in me by the said Act, do hereby permanently reserve the lands so temporarily reserved as aforesaid, and enumerated in the first column of the Schedule hereto, for the purposes specified in the second column of the said Schedule, being the same purposes for which the said lands were so temporarily reserved as aforesaid.
