They comprise broken pastoral land, covered with forest of rimu and kahikatea in gullies; rata, tawa, and hinau on the hills; and a dense undergrowth of supplejack and light scrub. The soil is fair, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation; well watered. Elevation, from 600 ft. to 1,000 ft. above sea-level. | |||||||

Generally low, hilly grazing-country, a few acres level on Section 16. Nearly all the bush on Section 17 is felled, and 120 acres on Section 16; the balance is moderately heavy, comprising tawa, rimu, rata, kahikatea, and thick undergrowth. Soil good, on papa formation; well watered. Elevation, from 500 ft. to 1,248 ft. above sea-level. |

Rural Land in Nelson Land District open for Sale or Selection.
PLUNKET, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by section one hundred and thirty-six of “The Land Act, 1892,” and section two of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby declare and provide as follows, that is to say,—

The rural land enumerated in the Schedule hereto is hereby set apart for disposal by way of sale or selection on and after the twenty-third day of October, one thousand nine hundred and six, at the respective prices specified in the said Schedule.

The said land may be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase, or on lease in perpetuity: provided that in the case of land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, it shall be selected on lease in perpetuity only and shall not be purchased for cash.

For the purposes of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” the land enumerated in the said Schedule hereto shall be deemed to be “scrub land.”

No general rate shall be levied or collected by any local authority from the said land for a period of two years from the date from which such land is disposed of, and no local authority shall have power to levy or collect any such rate from such land during such period.

After the first half-year’s rent has been paid by the selector the further instalments of rent payable by him for a period of two years shall not be demanded: provided that if at any time during the first five years of his occupancy the selector disposes of his interest in the land the rent so conceded shall be paid by him in full, and thereupon the Land Board may remit such instalments of rent payable by the incoming tenant, not exceeding in the aggregate the amount of rent previously conceded to the selector, as the Board shall think fit.

This section lies about 1,400 ft. to 2,500 ft. above sea-level; about 150 acres is covered with birch forest; 80 acres is flat open land, with a vegetation of scrub, fern, and native grass; the remainder consists of hills clad with fern, tutu, manuka scrub, and some native grass (Danthonia); well watered. Access by main road from Belgrave Railway-station, about twenty miles distant; an unformed road, about 50 chains in length across Reserve C, connects the section with the main road.
