all stationers and fancy-goods dealers’ shops in the Borough
of Waihi shall be closed accordingly at 10.15 p.m. on Satur-
days, at 1 p.m. on the weekly half-holiday, and at 8 p.m. on
the other four working-days of the week.

Varied Notice fixing Closing-hours of Chemists and Druggists’ Shops in the City of Christchurch.


WHEREAS by notice dated the 5th day of December,
1905, and gazetted on the 7th day of December,
1905, the Minister of Labour, in exercise of the powers in
that behalf conferred upon him by section 21 of “The Shops
and Offices Act, 1904,” and section 5 of “The Shops and
Offices Act Amendment Act, 1905,” and acting in accordance
with a requisition duly made and certified as required by
those sections, did direct that from and after the 18th day
of December, 1905, all shops in the trade of chemists and
druggists in the City of Christchurch should be closed at
8 o’clock p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays, at 1 o’clock p.m. on Thursdays (the weekly half-
holiday), and at 9 o’clock p.m. on Saturdays, except that
shops might be opened between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Thurs-
days: And whereas by a like requisition, duly made and
certified as aforesaid, he has been requested to vary the
said notice by fixing 10 o’clock in the evening as the hour of
closing instead of 9 o’clock on Saturdays:

Now, therefore, in compliance with the last-mentioned
requisition, and in exercise of the powers conferred by the
above-mentioned section, I do hereby vary the said notice
by directing that on and after the 12th day of February,
1906, the hour for closing on Saturday evenings shall be
10 o’clock accordingly.

Notifying a Reserve in the Township of Waipiro.


Department of Lands and Survey,
Wellington, 26th January, 1906.

IT is hereby noted for public information that the under-
mentioned land, having been shown upon the deposited
plan of the Native Township of Waipiro as a reserve for
the purpose specified at the end of the description in the
Schedule hereto, is vested in His Majesty in pursuance of
subsection (2) of section 12 of “The Native Townships Act,
1895,” and will be dealt with as a reserve under “The Public
Reserves Act, 1881.”


SCHEDULE.

All that area in the Hawke’s Bay Land District, containing
by admeasurement 2 acres 2 roods 7 perches, more or less,
being Sections Nos. 5 and 6, Block V, Waipiro Township.
Bounded towards the north by a public road; towards the
east by Section No. 7, Block V, Waipiro Township; towards
the south by Section No. 4 of the said Block V; and towards
the west generally by a public road: as the same is de-
lineated on the plan marked L. and S. 28004/80, deposited
in the Head Office, Department of Lands and Survey, at
Wellington, in the Wellington Land District, and thereon
coloured red. For a site for a public school.

AFRICA.

Ascension Island.

CLARENCE BAY APPROACH.—The s.s. “Kaipara,” drawing
23½ ft., touched on what appeared to be a coral patch
⅓ mile N. 70° W. from the outer spar buoy in the approach
to the bay. It has been charted as a shoal, carrying 3½ fms.,
in approx. 7° 55¾′ S., 14° 26¼′ W., 1⅓ miles N. 65° W. from
Fort Thornton. Nov.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

SINGAPORE.—A time-ball is est. at the obser. on Mount
Faber (approx. 1° 16′ 15″ N., 103° 49′ 24″ E.), and it, as well
as the other time-sig., is dropped automatically by elec. from
this obser. at 1h. 0m. 0s. standard time of the 105th meri-
dian, or at 0h. 55m. 17·6s. Mount Faber Obser. time, corre-
sponding to 18h. 0m. 0s. Gr. M.T. Should the sig. fail, it is
again hoisted, and the sig. repeated in a similar manner to
the time-balls at Fort Canning and Pulo Brani. An elec.
time-ball for the use of shipping has been fitted in the office
of the wharf superintendent, Tanjor Pagar Company. This
time-ball is in connection with the obser. standard clock,
and rings automatically at every hour of Gr. M.T. Chrono-
meter comparisons may be obtained by applying at the above-
mentioned office. Nov.

The s.s. “Spondilus,” drawing 27¾ ft., struck on an un-
charted shoal in approx. 0° 26¼′ N., 104° 35½′ E., N.-erd. of
Mesana Isl., srn. approach to the strait, close to that reported
by the s.s. “Madgeburg,” and with the ern. extr. of Mesana
Isl. S. 42° W., 2¼ miles, and the E. pt. of Niamok Isl.
S. 8° W. Nov.

BANKA STRAIT.—A lt.-buoy, red and black hor., exh. an
occ. white lt., vis. 10 secs., ecl. 10 secs., is to be moored in
approx. 2° 13¾′ S., 105° 17′ E., at the S.-ern. edge of Amelia
Bank. Nov.

MACCLESFIELD STRAIT.—A rk., carrying about 6 ft. at
L.W., with the wrk. of an iron ship upon it, is reported to
exist in approx. 2° 51¾′ S., 107° 0′ E., with Jelaka Isl. Lt.-h.
S. 60° E., about 5¾ cables. Nov.

SUNDA STRAIT.—An iron screw-pile beacon, surm. by a
black cone, is est. in 5° 12¾′ S., 106° 44¼′ E., on the wrn. side
of Arnemuiden Bank, in the nrn. approach to the strait.

CHINA SEAS, ETC.

TYPHOON AND STORM SIGS.—On 1st Jan., 1906, the follow-
ing system of typhoon and storm warning sigs. will be sub-
stituted for that now in use at the semaphore of the Im-
perial Maritime Customs at Canton, Amoy, Fuchau (Pagoda
Anchorage), Gutzlaff Isl., Wusung, Shanghai (Storm-sig.
Station), Chifu, Chinkiang, Taku, and Newchwang :—

The sigs. are made by means of shapes used as symbols
having numbers corresponding to them as follows :—

These shapes are hoisted at the yard-arms of the sig.-mast,
and have the following general chars. :—
