His Majesty is pleased, by and with the advice of His Privy Council, to order that the merchant ships of the said Kingdom of Italy, the measurement of which shall, after the 10th February, 1906, have been ascertained and denoted in the certificates of registry or other national papers of such ships, shall be deemed to be of the tonnage denoted in such certificates of registry or other national papers, in the same manner, to the same extent, and for the same purposes as the tonnage denoted in the certificate of registry of a British ship is deemed to be the tonnage of that ship:

And His Majesty is further pleased to direct that the Orders of Her late Majesty in Council, dated respectively the 30th day of September, 1873, the 14th day of February, 1883, and the 23rd day of November, 1893, be and the same are hereby revoked.

APPROACH TO PORT WAKEFIELD.—EAST SIDE OF ST. VINCENT GULF.

Isolated and scattered rocks having at various times been reported as existing on the flats between Long Spit and Bald Hill, and some of them being said to have 6 ft. less water over them than is shown on the chart, masters of vessels and others are hereby warned against navigating in less water than, say, 6 ft. over their draught.

These flats, for about three miles seaward from high-water mark, may be considered as foul ground.

This affects Admiralty Chart No. 2389B.

KANGAROO ISLAND, KINGSCOTE.

Notice is hereby given that in future the following lights will be exhibited at Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, viz. :

(1.) From a white painted house on the rise at the inner end of the jetty, a fixed white light showing to seaward over the jetty, and visible in clear weather a distance of eight miles.

(2.) From a post on the outer end of the jetty, a light, showing red to seaward and white to landward over the jetty, at a height of 13 ft. above H.W., and visible in clear weather about four miles.

The two lights in line lead over the telegraph bell buoy, and bear from it N. 74° W., correct magnetic.

Approximate position of high light: Lat. 35° 40′ S., long. 137° 38′ 30″ E.

This affects Admiralty Chart No. 2389B.

Notice fixing Closing-hours of Jewellers’ Shops in the City of Christchurch under the Shops and Offices Act.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the jewellers’ shops in the City of Christchurch, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the city shall be closed at 6 o’clock p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at 1 o’clock p.m. on Thursdays (the weekly half-holiday), and at 9 o’clock p.m. on Saturdays: And whereas the Christchurch City Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all jewellers’ shops in the city:

Now, therefore, I, William Hall-Jones, the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 21 of “The Shops and Offices Act, 1904,” and section 5 of “The Shops and Offices Act Amendment Act, 1905,” do hereby direct that from and after the 20th day of August, 1906, all jewellers’ shops in the City of Christchurch shall be closed in accordance with such requisition.

New Zealand International Exhibition, 1906. — Minerals Court.

A GOLD medal and fifty guineas, a silver medal and twenty-five guineas, and a bronze medal and ten guineas will be awarded by the Mines Department for essays on the present condition and future prospects of the mineral resources of New Zealand, and the best means of fostering their development.

In judging the merits of the essays preference will be given to those which are of a practical character.

The essays must be sent in to the Under-Secretary for Mines, Wellington, signed with a motto, and accompanied by a sealed envelope containing the author’s name and address, on or before 1st December, 1906.

The essays will be submitted to a Board of three persons (to be hereafter appointed), on whose decision the above prizes will be awarded.

Note.—“Mineral” means any metal or mineral, and includes petroleum and other mineral oils.
