MELLISH REEF.—HERALD BEACON ISLET.—BEACON DISAP-PEARED.—Captain J. S. Crichton, of the British steamer “Trafalgar,” reports that on 25th May, 1905, his vessel passed 2 miles to the eastward of Mellish Reef, and there was no beacon to be seen on Herald Beacon Islet.
Approx. position: Lat. 17° 24′ 39″ S., long. 155° 53′ 25″ E.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.
KAUAI ISLAND.—SOUTH COAST.—KALANIPUAO ROCK.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.—On 23rd June, 1905, a first-class can buoy, painted red and black in horizontal stripes, was moored in 45 ft. of water, 300 ft. S. 24° E. true (S.E. by S. mag.) from Kalanipuao Rock, south coast of Kauai, on the following bearings:—
Point (bluff) west side of Lawai Bay, right tangent, N. 47° E. true (N.E. ¾ N. mag.).
Makahuena Point, N. 88° E. true (E.N.E. ⅓ E. mag.).
Ukula Point, N. 70 W. true (W. ⅔ N. mag.).
This rock has only 3 ft. over it at low water. While vessels may pass inshore of the reef or between the buoy and rock, it is not recommended, and they are cautioned accordingly.

MANUKAU HARBOUR.—RE-ERECTION OF BEACON IN WAIROPA CHANNEL.

NOTICE is hereby given that a new pile iron beacon with a head-ball or cage has been erected at the head of the Wairopa Channel 1¼ E. of Shag Point, in the same place as the beacon was which was blown down in September, 1904, and which position has since been temporarily marked by a red drum buoy.
The following bearings mark the position of the beacon:—
North Point of Little Muddy Creek .. S. 60° W.
Opou Point .. .. .. N. 86° W.
Tewhau Point .. .. .. N. 6° E.

NOTICE is hereby given that any pupil-teacher, or any student of a technical school, or any other person, may be examined in drawing only either at the Civil Service Junior Examination or at the Teachers’ Certificate Examination. Candidates may offer for examination any one or more of the six branches of drawing prescribed for the Civil Service Junior Examination or for the Teachers’ Certificate Examination. The fee for examination is 2s. 6d. for each branch of drawing so offered. Passing in any branch of drawing will exempt the candidate from further examination in the same branch for a teacher’s certificate. Application to be examined must be made on the form provided, must be accompanied by a bank receipt for the amount of the fee, and must reach the office of the Inspector-General of Schools, at Wellington, not later than the 30th September. Forms may be obtained from the office of any Education Board, or from the office of the Inspector-General of Schools, at Wellington.
[The Civil Service Junior Examination is held during the second and third weeks of December, and the Teachers’ Certificate Examination is held early in January. More precise notification of the date will be sent to each candidate after receipt of his application to be examined.]
