land,” the lands in the Second Schedule shall be deemed to be “light-bush land,” and the lands in the Third Schedule shall be deemed to be “scrub land.”

  1. No general rate shall be levied or collected by any local authority from the said lands for the period of four years in the case of heavy-bush land, three years in the case of light-bush land, and two years in the case of scrub land, from the date from which in each case respectively such land is disposed of, and no local authority shall have power to levy or collect any such rate from such land during such period.

  2. After the first half-year’s rent has been paid by the selector the further instalments of rent payable by him for a period of four years in the case of heavy-bush land, three years in the case of light-bush land or swamp land, and two years in the case of scrub land, shall not be demanded; provided that if at any time during the first five years of his occupancy the selector disposes of his interest in the land the rent so conceded shall be paid by him in full, and thereupon the Land Board may remit such instalments of rent payable by the incoming tenant, not exceeding in the aggregate the amount of rent previously conceded to the selector, as the Board shall think fit.

Situated on Waitawhena Road. Access from Ongarue, twenty-nine miles distant—twenty-seven miles and a half by dray-road and one mile and a half by surveyed road. The land comprised in these sections consists of steep and easy spurs and good flats. There are small swamps on Sections 24 and 25. The sections are covered with mixed forest of rata, rimu, kahikatea, tawa, &c. The soil is good, on papa formation; well watered. Elevation, 500 ft. to 1,000 ft. above sea-level.

These sections are situated on Ohura Road. Access thereto is from Ongarue, about thirty-three and a half to thirty-five miles distant—thirty-one miles of the distance being by dray-road, the remainder by horse-track. The sections comprise generally hilly and undulating land, covered with light to heavy forest of tawhero, rata, hinau, tawa, matai, &c., and undergrowth. The soil is of good quality, resting on papa formation, and well watered. Elevation varies from 600 ft. to 1,000 ft. above sea-level.

Situated on the Tokirima Road. Access thereto is from Ongarue, about thirty-three miles and a half distant—thirty-one miles of which is along dray-road and the remaining distance along pack-track. This section comprises hilly and undulating land, covered with light and heavy forest consisting of tawhero and manuka, and tawa, rata, rimu, hinau, &c., and a thick undergrowth. The soil is fair to good, on papa-and-sandstone formation, and well watered. Elevation above sea-level varies from 440 ft. to 1,300 ft.

These sections are situated on Kopuha Road. Access thereto is from Ongarue, distant thirty-one to thirty-three miles, of which distance twenty-six miles is along dray-road and the remainder along walking-track. The land is level, hilly, and undulating in parts, covered with light and heavy forest—the former covering a small area, and the latter consisting of tawa, rimu, hinau, and rata, and undergrowth. The soil is from fair to good, on papa-and-sandstone formation. Elevation above sea-level varies from 450 ft. to 1,100 ft.

Access is from Ongarue—by dray-road thirty-one miles, by horse-track six miles, and two miles by walking-track. The land is hilly and undulating, covered with fairly heavy forest of rata, pukatea, tawa, hinau, rimu, &c., with undergrowth. Fair soil, papa-and-sandstone formation; well watered. Elevation above sea-level varies from 650 ft. to 1,200 ft.

Elevation above sea-level varies from 570 ft. to 1,900 ft.

The land is level, hilly, and undulating, covered with light and heavy forest consisting in the lighter portions of tawhero and manuka, and in the heavier portions of tawa, rata, rimu, hinau, &c., with thick undergrowth. The soil is fair to good, on papa-and-sandstone formation; well watered. Elevation varies from 440 ft. to 1,300 ft. above sea-level.

These sections are situated on Turoto Road. TOTORO SURVEY DISTRICT.

Situated on Potaka Road. Access is from Te Kuiti, distant twenty-eight miles—by dray-road for sixteen miles, surveyed road only twelve miles. There is a pack-track across country to this section. The land is undulating forest, with hills and spurs. Soil is fair, on papa formation; well watered. The forest is light, consisting as it does of tawa, rimu, hinau, pukatea, &c., with thick undergrowth of ponga, karewa, &c. Elevation of land varies from 200 ft. to 700 ft. above sea-level.

Situated on a branch of Kumara Road. Access to this section is from Te Kuiti—by dray-road for sixteen miles, and then by surveyed road only for eight and a half miles. There is a pack-track across country to this section. The land consists of low and hilly forest country, of fair soil, on papa formation. The forest is light, comprising tawa, hinau, rimu, pukatea, and rata, with thick undergrowth. There is a small clearing on the frontage. Well watered. Elevation above sea-level varies from 375 ft. to 725 ft.

ARIA SURVEY DISTRICT.

Situated on Paraheka Road. Access thereto is from Te Kuiti—by formed and partly metalled dray-road for sixteen miles, by pack-track for four miles, and by surveyed road only for ten miles. Access may also be had by pack-track across country. This section comprises slopes, terraces, spurs, and flats. The soil is from fair to good, on papa formation; well watered. Elevation varies from 250 ft. to 800 ft. above sea-level.
