(636) CHINA SEA.

Formosa (Taiwan)—Lights temporarily extinguished.—The
Japanese Government has given notice that, should circum-
stances require it, all lights on the coast of Formosa (Taiwan)
Island would be temporarily extinguished.

(671) HINDUSTAN.

West Coast—Bombay Approach—Outer Light-vessel—In-
tended Change.—Information has been received from the
Port Officer, Bombay, dated 5th March, 1904, that on or about
1st September, 1904, the present light-vessel “Bombay”
will be replaced by a new unwatched light-vessel illuminated
by means of Pintsh’s gas. The lantern will be fixed to the
mast, and will exhibit an intermittent white light every
15 seconds—thus, light 10½ seconds, eclipse 4½ seconds—
and will be visible 11 miles. The light-vessel will be fitted
with a 600 lb. bell, which will ring automatically every
15 seconds. The vessel will be painted red, with the words
“Bombay Floating Light” in white on her sides.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

Spencer Gulf.—Jarrod Point.

Masters of vessels and others are informed that a tub buoy,
with perch and ball painted red, has been placed in a
position about W.S.W. of Jarrod Point, in 12 ft. o.l.w.s.
Approximate position, lat. 33° 16′ 15″ S, long. 137° 46′ 15″ E.
This affects Admiralty charts Nos. 2389B and 403.

New Zealand Government Railways.—By-law re Persons
suffering from Infectious Diseases travelling by Rail.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers conferred by
“The Government Railways Act, 1900,” I, Joseph
George Ward, Minister for Railways, do hereby cancel By-
law 21 of the by-laws gazetted 27th October, 1882, and in
lieu thereof do hereby make the following by-law, and do
hereby declare that such by-law shall come into operation
on and from the date of publication thereof in the New
Zealand Gazette.

BY-LAW.

  1. Except by arrangement with and by permission either
    of the District Railway Manager or of any Stationmaster,
    it shall not be lawful—

(a.) For any person suffering from any infectious
disease, as defined in “The Public Health Act,
1900,” to travel or attempt to travel in or upon
any railway-carriage on the railway, or to enter
upon any railway premises; or

(b.) For any person, whilst in charge of any person
suffering as aforesaid, to take or place, or allow
such person to be taken or placed, in or upon any
railway-carriage on the railway, or upon any
railway premises.

  1. Any person who commits a breach of the foregoing
    by-law shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding £10 for
    each such breach.

Notice of Intention to take Land for a Road through
Manga-a-toro 1a No. 3, Block VIII., Tahoraite Survey Dis-
trict, Waipawa County.

NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the
provisions of “The Public Works Act, 1894,” to
execute a certain public work, to wit, the construction of
a road through Manga-a-toro 1a No. 3, Block VIII., Taho-
raite Survey District, Waipawa County, and for the pur-
poses of such public work the land described in the
Schedule hereto is required to be taken. And notice is
further given that the plan of the said road and of the land
so required to be taken is deposited in the Post-office at
Weber, and is there open for inspection. And notice is also
hereby given that all persons affected by the execution of
the said public work or by the taking of the said land shall,
if they have any well-grounded objections to the execution
of the said public work or to the taking of such land, set
forth the same in writing, and send such writing, within
forty days from the first publication of this notice, to the
Minister for Public Works, Wellington.

Chief Engineer of Roads, at Wellington, in the Wellington
Land District.

Prohibiting the Importation into Tasmania of Swine from
New Zealand.—Notice No. 871.

Department of Agriculture,
Wellington. 31st May, 1904.

IT is hereby notified for public information that the
Government of Tasmania has renewed for one year
from 10th May, 1904, the prohibition against the importa-
tion into that State of any swine from New Zealand.

and Civil Service Examinations, 1905.

IN pursuance of regulations under “The Education Act,
1877,” and under “The Civil Service Examination
Act, 1900,” notice is hereby given that at the examination
for Class C and at the Civil Service Senior Examination of
January, 1905, candidates will not be examined in the
history of any period of literature. The special books of
which a knowledge will be required are as follows:—

ENGLISH.—Carlyle, “French Revolution”; Shakspeare,
“Merchant of Venice” and “Julius Caesar”; Thackeray,
“Esmond.”

GREEK.—Herodotus, “Urania”; Aeschylus, “Persae.”
